If you love hotels that feel like stories, The Abner in Litchfield, Connecticut is exactly that kind of place. Recently opened in September 2024, this boutique hotel is more than just a place to sleep, it’s a thoughtfully reimagined piece of history turned into design-forward comfort. Nestled in the heart of Litchfield, it quietly bridges past and present with natural light, warmth, and those little details that make a stay feel memorable.

Location & History

The Abner occupies the old Litchfield County Courthouse, a granite building originally constructed in 1888 that sat unused after courthouse operations moved locations in 2017. The building is deeply rooted in Litchfield’s legal and architectural heritage. It’s named after Reverend Abner Reeve, father to Tapping Reeve, who founded America’s first law school here in 1772, so the hotel carries more than just aesthetic presence; it carries local legacy.

The transformation into The Abner was overseen by Salt Hotels with one goal in mind: to preserve what makes the courthouse iconic while adapting it for modern luxury. That meant working closely with preservation boards, retaining original features (like wainscoting, jury boxes, fireplaces) and adapting spaces like the main courtroom into a restaurant, while adding new gathering spaces like a rooftop bar.

Design & Interiors

The Abner’s interiors are a careful mix of historic character and contemporary polish. Twenty guest rooms are individually styled, each blending vintage finds with bespoke furnishings and Salt Hotels’ signature layers of texture. Robes are hand-loomed, bath amenities are clean and sustainably sourced, and blackout curtains encourage the kind of deep rest that feels rare in daily life.

Public spaces highlight the courthouse’s past with artful nods to its former function. Think: jury boxes reimagined as banquette seating, tall ceilings with gilded detail, and fireplaces that still anchor rooms with warmth. The palette is moody but refined. ochres, warm whites, and soft blacks inspired by leatherbound law books, making every corner feel both dramatic and welcoming.

Dining at The Courtroom

The showpiece of The Abner is its restaurant, The Courtroom, which occupies the former main courtroom of the building. Here, 14-foot ceilings and enormous arched windows flood the space with light, while historic details, like the judge’s bench and carved millwork, have been seamlessly integrated into the design. The effect is striking: dining in a space that feels equal parts grand and intimate.

The menu leans into seasonal, locally sourced ingredients with a modern tavern sensibility. Expect New England classics with an elegant twist, paired with an approachable but thoughtful wine list. Whether it’s a celebratory dinner or a quiet night in, The Courtroom makes eating in Litchfield feel like an occasion.

Cocktails at The Verdict

No stay at The Abner is complete without a trip upstairs to Verdict, the hotel’s rooftop bar. With sweeping views over the Litchfield Hills, this is the place to watch the sky turn pink at sunset with a cocktail in hand. The space is stylish but unfussy, plush seating, a curated drinks menu, and that sense of perspective you only get when you’re just above it all. For us, it was the perfect nightcap spot, a way to end the evening on a high note (literally).

What sets The Abner apart is how it honors the past without being bound by it. You’re staying in a building with over a century of stories, but you never feel like you’re in a museum. Instead, every detail, from the texture of the fabrics to the flow of the restaurant to the rooftop’s modern ease, feels intentional, contemporary, and deeply comfortable. Add to that its location right in Litchfield’s charming center, and you have a retreat that’s equal parts historic and fresh.

The Abner is more than a stay, it’s a destination. It’s also the perfect base for exploring everything that makes Litchfield special: strolling through downtown’s shops and cafés, venturing out to nearby apple orchards in the fall, or savoring an afternoon at one of the local wineries. For anyone looking for a Connecticut escape that’s polished yet personal, The Abner is a gem waiting to be discovered.
