Getting Ready for Hurricane Season

Getting Ready for Hurricane Season
📍 Downtown St. Pete, Florida

Hurricane Season, Florida, storm, prepare, Hurricane Kit

Dress (also) || Shoes (also) || Earrings

June 1st marks the beginning of Hurricane Season. In years past, I wouldn’t have given this a passing thought. Such is life when you live in the Sunshine State. This year feels a little different, and my blood pressure is up. If you’re new here, you may not know that our home flooded from the very last Tropical Storm of the year. Although it is almost entirely back to normal, I still have some anxiety from the 10 inches that came into our home. When we made the last-minute decision to pack up and evacuate, we had no idea what would be left of our starter home. From now until December (and possibly longer), I’ll be holding my breath and praying that this year’s Hurricane Season will be kind to us. Still, here’s how I’m getting our home ready for hurricane season.

Reevaluate Your Home and Insurance Policy

When thinking about future storms, my biggest concern is obviously our home. While there isn’t much you can do to fight against storm surge and flooding, you’re not helpless. I recommend performing a diagnostic check on the exterior of your home. In particular, it’s important to know that the roof over your head is in good condition and doesn’t need to be repaired in any way. If your home is older, it may be worth the splurge to update the windows with something that withstand hurricane-force winds. At the very least, double-check the windows and doors for cracks and have shutters on hand in case a storm is predicted to come your way.

In that same light, now is the time to reevaluate your home’s insurance policy. Depending on where you live, you may be required to have flood insurance. Because our neighborhood is right on Tampa Bay, we fall into this category. Decide if you want to increase your coverage and if that policy protects both your home and contents. I’m by no means an expert, so find a professional who can answer any lingering questions you may have.

Stock Up Your Hurricane Kit

No Florida home is complete without one! While it can take many different forms, we have a large plastic bin with plenty of non-perishable food to save for if the power runs out. It’s easy to forget about the Hurricane Kit once you make it, but everything has an expiration date. If you already have one, double-check the canned goods and replace your water. It may even be wise to a fresh pack of batteries too.

FEMA recommends having a 3-day supply for evacuations and a 2-week supply if you’re staying in your home if you’re starting a kit from scratch. The non-perishable food items can be whatever you prefer, but I always try to have a wide range of flavors (peanut butter, crackers, canned fruit) and fun treats to help take the sting out of hurricane anxiety. In terms of water, the rule of thumb is one gallon, per person, per day. Your Hurricane Kit should also include critical non-food items such as a first aid kit, flashlights, and a hand-crank radio. Don’t forget to have rations for all family pets.

Create An Evacuation Plan

There are so many different variables when it comes to creating a game plan. How bad is the storm supposed to be? What does the path look like? How long do I have to prepare? While there are so many last-minute decisions you’ll need to be ready to make, having an overarching strategy will give you peace of mind at the beginning of the season. Depending on the circumstances, we know that we can bunker down with my parents or escape to stay with my family on the east coast of Florida. Although it has never gotten to this point, we keep Tallahassee in mind as a destination if things are predicted to be dire.

Part of the evacuation plan is knowing what you’ll ultimately bring with you and how you’ll protect what stays. As part of my Hurricane Kit, I also keep a packing list to check off as I load the car. Having to leave your home is hard enough without dealing with the nagging feeling of forgetting something.

Make An Inventory Of Your Possessions

I’m speaking from our most recent experience. For insurance purposes, you’ll be asked to make an inventory of anything that was destroyed from the storm. Before this storm, I had never taken the time to list out what we owned. While I was able to backtrack, it was extremely time-consuming. Honestly, it seemed like a huge undertaking in terms of post-flood clean-up.

As you make your inventory, a simple Google Sheet worked for us. I included a description, the date I purchased it, and the price when I bought it. Because most of what I purchase is from online orders, I could track down a lot of the needed information. I had to take a picture of each item and, from there, linked it in the Google Sheets.

Hurricane Season, Florida, storm, prepare, Hurricane Kit

Take a deep breath. If you live in a hurricane-prone state, there’s no sense in spending the entire summer worrying about something beyond your control. By preparing at the beginning of the season, hopefully, you’ll be able to breathe easy for the rest of the summer.

A Guide to St. Pete Beaches

A Guide to St. Pete Beaches
📍 Don CeSar Hotel, St. Pete Beach

Florida, St. Pete, beach, beaches, water, Don CeSar, Vineyard Vines

Dress (also) || Heels ($50 off with code SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE) || Clutch

I don’t know if it always comes across here, but I am a born-and-raised beach bum. The idea of spending all day at the beach, in the salt and sand, seems like heaven. Since I grew up in the St. Pete area, I’ve also had the pleasure of visiting every local strip of sand that dots the Gulf of Mexico. These pristine beach towns have been a huge tourism pull for years and there’s no sign of slowing down. If you are new to the area or have plans on visiting, here’s a guide to my favorite beaches in the St. Pete and Pinellas County area. Because I’m a stickler on details, I want to clarify that these are all separate towns from St. Pete. Some, primarily Clearwater Beach and Honeymoon Island, are quite a drive away, but absolutely worth the trip. Make one your soul destination or beach hop to your heart’s content.

Fort De Soto Park

This is the perfect destination if you want to feel off the grid and get in touch with nature. Fort De Soto is a county park. While it doesn’t have the restaurants and hotels as other local beaches, that doesn’t mean the beaches are any less beautiful. For one thing, it’s dog-friendly. Feel free to pack up your puppy for a fun day in the sun that the entire family will enjoy. David and I like to launch our kayak from here and explore the two-mile canoe trail. Once we even saw an entire flock of bright pink spoonbills. My favorite option at Fort De Soto Park is to simply pack a lunch and do nothing! There’s no wrong choice in how to spend your day.

Pass-a-Grille

I hate to say it, but this has become my favorite beach in St. Pete. Well, at least it’s the one I visit the most often. Pass-a-Grille Beach is the southernmost part of St. Pete Beach and it’s my ideal escape. The beaches are simply stunning, plus there is a nice range of restaurants and shops so you can fully take advantage of your trip. Start your day with breakfast at The Seahorse. This institution has been serving Pass-a-Grille for over 80 years. From there you can explore the shops on 8th Avenue, lovingly known as the “World’s Smallest Main Street.” For finer dining, I recommend making a reservation at The Dewey and grab a sunset cocktail at the Rooftop Bar.

St. Pete Beach

Most recently, St. Pete Beach has been ranked as the Number 1 beach in the United States and Number 5 in the World. Those are so incredible accolades and something that locals are very proud of. The first thing I have to mention about SPB is, of course, the Don CeSar Hotel. Originally opening in 1928, it is lovingly known as the Pink Palace. The stunningly pink stucco and palm trees make it one of my favorite places in the area to explore. I take any chance to spend a day here. Further north, you’ll also find one of my favorite beach breakfast places, the Frog Pond. The menu is almost French-inspired, so definitely order the quiche. They are decadent! If there’s a line, and it’s a good chance, stop next door for coffee at Grove Surf & Coffee. You can get caffeinated with their fun menu options or grab supplies for your beach day. After a day in the sun, cool day at one of my favorite local breweries, Mastry’s. There are so many drink options to match anyone’s preference and taste.

Madeira Beach

Just north of St. Pete Beach is the little gem of Madeira Beach. The beaches are sweeping and there’s so much to do. You’ll love visiting John’s Pass Village. What started as a pirate-founded fishing village is now a favorite tourist destination with over 130 shops and restaurants. You’ll find quintessential tacky tourist shops, of course, but don’t skip over boutiques that sell Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines. Mad Beach Brewing is a favorite place to stop for local food and an extensive tap list. If you haven’t noticed about the St. Pete area, breweries are a running theme. Nearly all are worth visiting.

Clearwater Beach

I think this Clearwater Beach is still the most iconic in the area. It’s the most developed for restaurants and resorts, plus is a straight shot from the airport. Before the bridges changed, I went to this beach a lot. After school, weekends, holidays, I was here with friends. Over time, I learned about the best secret places to park and grab lunch. Things have drastically changed in recent years, but I still love some of the staples in this beachside town. Frenchy’s is always a favorite. There are several locations for this local chain of restaurants. Tourists will typically pick the Rockaway location because it’s right on the beach and has the best view for sunsets. I prefer the Original location a few blocks away. This whole-in-the-wall was a regular date night spot when my parents first met. Order the Grouper Sandwich, but don’t forget to start with an order of the Smoked Fish Dip. While I never actually stayed on Clearwater Beach, I would love to have a stay at the Hotel Cabana for a quick getaway.

Honeymoon Island

This final beach is pretty far from St. Pete proper but is another favorite from my childhood. Similar to Fort De Soto, Honeymoon Island is a State Park and is a place to unwind. Thankfully, there are no resorts or restaurants, except for a small food shack. I recommend turning off your phone, packing a good book, and stroll past the families for your own slice of paradise. While you’re in the area, be sure to visit sweet Downtown Dunedin for a great array of food and shopping options.

Which beach should you visit? There’ really no right answer. Each town and beach has its own sense of pride and style. No matter where you book a trip, be sure to treat the community with every ounce of respect that it deserves. Clean up after yourselves and be kind to the locals you meet along the way!

Packing Guide: Gasparilla Inn

March 31, 2021

Packing Guide: Gasparilla Inn
📍 Gasparilla Inn, Boca Grande

Gasparilla Inn, Boca Grande, Florida, Packing Guide, beach, Tory Burch

Tunic (also) (similar) || Jeans || Sandals || Clutch

In the past few months, we’ve made enough trips to the Gasparilla Inn for it to feel like home. I joke that I’m on my best self in Boca Grande. After each visit, my most frequently asked question comes from fellow travelers who would be visiting shortly. Namely, “what should I pack?” This is always a critical question when traveling to someplace new, one that I’m more than happy to answer! Because the Gasparilla Inn has a dress code for some of the restaurants, I thought it would be fun to answer by activity to make packing a breeze!

Morning Coffee and Exploring

Every morning in Boca Grande starts at the Inn Bakery. Located just down the block from the historic Inn, you can give yourself a nice little workout first in the morning. So, first thing first, you have to get yourself out of the luxurious bed, out of your Lake pajamas, and ready for the day! Coffee time at the Gasparilla Inn is a surprisingly casual event. It’s a time where you can get to know the other guests and do some exploring around Boca Grande. My favorite outfit of choice is a simple tee shirt and bright pair of chino shorts. Whether it’s sandals or sneakers, consider wearing a comfortable pair of shoes for your post-coffee walk. Don’t forget a pair of sunglasses and a baseball hat for the sunnier days.

A Day at the Beach Club

This my favorite part of any Gasparilla Inn trip, doing nothing at the Beach Club. Since this is a family-friendly hotel, I always like to make sure I dress modestly and comfortably. There is an infinite number of swimsuit styles out there, but my current favorite has been a high-waisted bikini bottom and bandeau top from J. Crew. It has an old-world glam feel without feeling stuffy. Pack a breezy cover-up to wear as walk around the pool and to/from the hotel. This boho midi dress has been a recent favorite over the past few years. It’s one I can dress down for the beach or make a little dressier for lunch at the Pink Elephant. Since the Gulf can be windy at times, this will help you stay warm on the not-so-hot days. Finally, don’t forget to bring a tropical-inspired tote bag to hold all of the extras: hats, sunscreen, and a good beach read!

A Match at the Tennis Club

Each time we visit the Gasparilla Inn, I always bring my tennis racket in hopes to get on the court. Since my focus is almost solely the Beach Club, that hasn’t happened yet, but I know it will soon. Right next to the Beach Club is the Tennis Club which has seven courts available. Even at the hottest point of the day, you’ll still see a few courts filled up and the cutest tennis outfit. Tennis whites aren’t required, so feel free to add a pop of color. I love this stunning blue sleeveless polo from Tory Burch on a hot summer day and coordinating navy tennis skirt. Be sure to pack proper tennis shoes and buy a Gasparilla Inn logo hat from the Inn Boutique.

Dinner at the Inn Dining Room

The Inn Dining Room was the one place where I found there to be a specific dress code. For gentlemen, in particular, be sure to pack a blazer if you visiting in the Fall and Winter. For the ladies, this is your dressiest opportunity while visiting the Gasparilla Inn. Have fun with the evening and wear a dress that makes you feel special and a great pair of heels. Before your reservation sure to join your fellow guests at BZ’s for a pre-dinner cocktail.

If you have a trip to the Gasparilla Inn or any beachside resort planned, I hope this helps! Be sure to check the weather and treat yourself to something fun along the way! Happy travels!
