Shuffleboard: The St. Pete Pastime

Shuffleboard: The St. Pete Pastime

St. Pete’s is certainly full of its sports fans, I’m one of them, but there is one in particular that has definitely made it’s mark on our city’s history. Don’t laugh, but shuffleboard is the game to play. Normally associated with retirement homes and cruise ships, it’s come back with a breath of fresh air. Since so many of us are looking for a new excuse to get outside, let me introduce to the pastime that put my town on the map.

What’s the History?

Sometimes called 52 feet of history, the game started at least 500 years ago. Honestly, the exact origins are still a mystery. We know that King Henry VII liked to play, but that doesn’t mean England can claim it. It’s such a simple premise, I can almost envision this game being played during the time of Cleopatra or Julius Caesar. Now a days, it’s become extremely popular in retirement homes and even makes some appearances at bars in the miniature version.

What are the Rules?

Like I said, this game is pretty simple. You and your partner stand on opposite ends of the court, with another team. At each end, there is a segmented triangle with each section representing different points. From top to bottoms: 10, 8, 7, and negative 10 (called the kitchen). You and the opposite team use a cue stick (called tang) and four discs each (called biscuits) to either score points or play defensive. If the biscuit touches the line, sorry no points! After eight rounds, the team with the most points wins. Depending on the venue or club, there are some different quirks or interpretations on the rules. So, if you’re playing for the first time, it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Why Saint Pete?

That’s a fair question. Shuffleboard came to the Sunshine City nearly a century ago, in 1923, as a leisurely activity during the Florida population boom. If you’re a history enthusiast, I highly recommend reading Bubble in the Sun, one of my favorite summer reads. Anyway, as the popularity of the sport grew, a need for a formal court presented itself. It made its home at Mirror Lake and the world’ largest shuffleboard club was born. In 1979, the International Shuffleboard Association was founded here to help the sport become more popular in the USA. Funny enough, shuffleboarders come from around the world to play here.

How do I join?

As far as I can tell, there isn’t a shuffleboard club database, but a simple Google search should go along way. In St. Pete, you can join the league and play in weekly tournaments or just the fun of it. David and I are a part of a league and I don’t want to brag, but I’m pretty good. We even have our own set of tangs. Maybe someday, I can go pro! While we lived in NYC, we joined the league at Royal Palms in Brooklyn (also in Chicago). It took us an hour to get there by subway, but it was such a fun release and felt like a little slice of Florida in the Big Apple. The aesthetic was definitely vintage St. Pete inspired!

Shuffleboard… It’s not for retirees anymore. I used to get strange looks when I told people I was in a league, but it’s a great stress reliever. It’s extremely casual, relaxed, but most of all fun! Be part of this St. Pete tradition and join the club today!

Katie

Finding Paris in Florida

Finding Paris in Florida

Paris, French, France, Florida, style

Dress || Wedges || Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet

Disclaimer: I had fully intended on posting this on July 14th, in honor of Bastille Day, France’s national holiday. But July has really gotten away from me, and it meant slowing down the blog to focus on new opportunities. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing lots of good news in the upcoming weeks. Anyways, when I ventured to France last year with my best friend, I instantly fell in love. Paris lived up to all of my expectations and then some. So much so, I’m constantly looking for tiny pieces locally to recreate the City of Light. This list is quick and will work no matter where you live, but here are my favorite ways to find Paris in Florida.

Paris, French, France, Florida, style
Start the day with petit déjeuner

On my trip to Paris last year, one of my favorite moments was starting the day with a French style breakfast. It included either fresh croissants or baguettes, butter, honey, black coffee, and a side of fruit. That’s all it takes and is extremely easy to recreate stateside. Just in case the mood strikes me, I always keep salted French butter on hand. It honestly makes a huge difference! Right now Echire is my favorite brand. Drizzled with orange blossom honey and I’m in food heaven.

Play the right musique

When I first started working from home, I quickly realized the importance of great background music. It keeps me focused and hyper productive. In the past, I’ve turned to Mo-town, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong. Now, I’ve added French oldies to that list. It instantly transports me to walking the streets of Paris. I’ll even listen to it while in the car, which gets me some strange looks when my windows are rolled down.

Eat at your local French restaurant

In recent years, I think French cuisine has become more attainable and less intimidating. Restaurants dedicated to all things French have started to pop up more. I bet you’ll find one in or near your own town. While there are a few choices locally, I think the most authentic experience would come from Left Bank Bistro in St. Pete. Not only does it offer stellar French food, but it also tries to create an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1920s, when Hemingway and Picasso called Paris home. My favorite dishes would have to be either Coq au Vin or Beef Bourguignon.

Try to dress the part

Parisienne style is equal parts effortless and sophisticated. It’s easy to identify, but surprisingly difficult to replicate. While I wouldn’t call myself an expert, I would say it comes down to simplicity. French women rarely wear flashy logos or invest in trendy pieces. Instead, they stick to high-quality, timeless items in a more neutral color palette. A good place to start would be shopping Sezane, a Paris-based answer to Madewell. It would also help to add nautical striped tees, a la Saint James, or espadrilles wedges to really capture French summer chic. Another good question to ask is, “What would Coco Chanel do?”

Have a French wine night

It’s the summer time, and I know that rosé is all the rage for the season, but I still prefer my white or red. The list of French wines is long: Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot. Either pick one type to focus on or pick a variety from a favorite region. Whatever you land on, I recommend accompanying it with a charcuterie board with French cheese and bread. Especially if you’re hosting, it will wow your guests as if you were dining on Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

Add France to your shower and makeup routine

Have you seen French women recently? There are simply gorgeous and have such a natural glow about them. A lot can be said about fantastic genetics, but it made me investigate French beauty products. Over the course of the year, I’ve been trying to swap for some Parisian counterparts and I’ve loved the results so far. I feel fresher and more confident to let my own complexion shine through. It also helps that they smell amazing. Start by looking at Le Petit Marseillais for all of your shower needs. Their shower gel leaves me smelling like Vanilla for the entire day.

Brush up on the language

My secret wish is to be a polyglot, or someone who speaks multiple languages. Daily, I play on DuoLingo, jumping from French to Italian to Spanish. Before my trip to Paris last year, I took a few months to study the language. While I was no where near fluent, or even conversational, it made a huge difference in how I was perceived as a tourist. Dang it, I tried, and I think it was very appreciated by the locals. I hope the next time I go to France, I’ll have some more advanced skills in my repertoire.

Book your trip

Nothing makes Paris come more alive and tangible than booking that trip. I know, I know, it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to visit anytime soon, but pencil something in. Even if it’s the end of 2021, you’ll be floating on a French Cloud 9 and have plenty of time to prepare. You just have to check out Wit and Whimsy. Meghan is an NYC based blogger, but her heart is always in Paris. She even offers personalized itineraries for your trip and is such a great resource!

Staying in Florida for such a long period of time, and having to cancel several international trips along the way, has heightened my sense of wanderlust. While no one truly knows when travel will get back to normal, I look forward to when I can revisit Paris, hopefully with David in tow, on a much needed European escape. Until then, I’ll do my best to find Paris in Florida.

Katie

A Day Trip to Lakeland

A Day Trip to Lakeland

Sundress || Sandals ($50 off with SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE) || Handbag || Sunglasses || Earrings || Bracelet

Isn’t it funny how you can drive by an exit almost your whole life and never once stop to visit? I’m still on my quest of visiting more of the Sunshine State this summer. I was so happy to take up one of my dearest friends on her offer to show me her town, Lakeland. Home to picturesque Florida Southern College and a gift from the Queen of England, this small town is absolutely worth a day to see.

Have a Pastry

Our day started the way every morning should, pastries and coffee on the patio. The number one spot in town for your morning fix would have to be Born & Bread Bakehouse. This is a local institution and has a line around the block almost every morning, even in quarantine. Because my friend knows me so well, she ordered me the Banana Bourbon Nutella croissant. This was such a decadent treat!

After we picked up our order, we stopped by her mom’s AirBnb, Owenby House. Just a quick drive from Lakeland’s downtown area, it would be a perfect place to rest your head. Her mom did such an amazing job decorating and furnishing this quiet oasis.

Go Antiquing

Like with any other quaint southern town, Lakeland is prime for antiquing. The highlight of the trip, apart from seeing my friend, was spending time at Lloyds of Lakeland Antiques. We spent hours, yes hours, at this store right in their downtown district. There were rows upon rows of all kinds of vintage goodies that made my heart flutter. Blue and white china (including Royal Copenhagen)? Check! Mid-century Florida knick-knacks? Check! Jade cookware? Double check! Since our cottage house is short on space, I’m proud of what I didn’t buy. But just wait. When I have a full home to furnish, this will be my first destination for decor.

Shop Local

One of my favorite things about visiting small, idyllic towns is to pop in and support the local boutiques. Lakeland has its fair share and then some. The number one name on that list is Scout and Tag. This seemed like several shops within one storefront. They sell a little bit of everything from home goods to beauty products. As you’re shopping, you’ll see a lot of swan motifs. That’s because they were gifted a pair of swans from Queen Elizabeth in 1954. Those descendants still call nearby Lake Hollingsworth home and gives Lakeland’s nickname the Swan City.

Revamp Your Facial Routine

One final gem of Lakeland, actually comes from next-door Bartow. Rafa Naturals is a skincare and candle company that my friend has been raving about for years. Originally founded in 2010, they offer locally crafted, natural, vegan and organic products. I can personally attest that their candles and soaps are heavenly! On this most recent trip, I picked up some samples from their beauty line and can’t wait to give them a try too.

We capped off the day together with lunch from Black and Brew Bistro. This felt like the spot to be and was simply delicious. Because of time, there was still so much that I missed out on and can’t wait for my return trip in August. Swan Brewing, in particular, seems like a great next spot to visit. For all of my Floridians, near and far, be sure to visit Lakeland for a lovely escape and a healthy dose of charm.

Katie
