As my blog posts about our wonderful Paris Babymoon begin to wind down, I’m still canvassing through hundreds of the little moment we had and the pictures we took along the way. Paris is, if nothing else, such a truly photogenic city. From the film noir inspired cocktails at a roof top bar to simply exploring the tiny side streets on the Left Bank, I’m endlessly inspired by the City of Lights. If you ever hear people who speak negatively of Paris… That it’s over-hyped, the residents are rude, that trash is everywhere… Do not believe it for one second!

I think one of my favorite quotes from Ernest Hemingway truly says it best, “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” As we returned from France and into a busy winter season, I strive to find the moveable feast wherever I go and make the tiny moments feel as special as an evening in Paris. Enjoy these little winter snapshots in Paris.

Where will you find your next moveable feast? It can be in Paris, New York City, or even right in your own backyard. There is so much joy in this world, especially for those who go out of their way to find it.

Love from Paris,
Katie

An heirloom is considered anything of value that is passed from one generation to the next. Sometimes, it’s something that has substantial monetary value. Other times, it’s simply something attached to a significant memory or moment within a particular family.

I was incredibly close with my maternal grandparents. They are a huge factor in the person I am today. While they’ve been gone for many years, I feel very fortunate to have countless memories with them to cling to and unique trinkets from them that I will always hold dear. The most cherished piece of jewelry I own, apart from my wedding ring, is my grandma’s signet ring with her monogram engraved. I save it for very special occasions to be able to pass it along for Baby Kennedy in the future.

A few months ago, my mom rediscovered a box of my grandma’s things. Inside was a beautiful silk scarf, lovingly saved and perfectly preserved. It still had the faintest note of my grandma’s signature scent, Charlie Red. Even more astounding was that this scarf still had the tags attached. It was an accessory seemingly suspended in time. After some extensive research, I found that the scarf came from a department store in Cherbourg, France, a port city in Normandy, and was purchased in the late 40s.

My grandpa was a career naval man and found himself stationed in Cherbourg after World War II. All of this family history woven into a simple scarf makes the item absolutely priceless. In a post-World War II Europe, I see my grandpa (in his uniform) thinking of my beautiful grandma, thousands of miles away, and shopping at a luxury department store to find her the perfect souvenir. Even through his regimented military-like discipline, my grandpa was a very thoughtful soul and a world-class gift-giver. I know my grandma would have considered this scarf too precious to wear, so she kept it safe. Here we are nearly 80 years later, with the scarf now an heirloom that continues to be loved by a third generation.

As I wore this scarf through Paris during our babymoon, I couldn’t help but feel that four generations of women in my family were present: my grandma, my mom (who gifted me the scarf), myself, and our future baby girl (who will be named after my mom’s side of the family). My dear grandparents sadly never met David, and I wish they were still here every day. Instead, I cherish the moments where I can feel their presence and reconnect with my family’s history.

Love from Paris,
Katie

As I write this, I’m in my 25th week of pregnancy. Saying it out loud feels insane! In just about 100 days, we’ll be joined by Baby Girl Kennedy, and our lives will be changed forever. Not that David and I haven’t already felt a seismic shift for the better. Since I’m just a few short weeks away from entering the third trimester, I thought I’d give a little recap on how the first two have treated me. Plus, I wanted to share some of the products that have made this an easier adjustment.

The First Trimester

I’m sure we’ve all heard the horror stories about how awful first-trimester symptoms can be… Morning sickness, fatigue, and new aches and pains around the body. While I experienced a few symptoms and learned that “morning” sickness is a misnomer- it can last all day- everything was perfectly manageable. The two things that never really came my way were food aversions and cravings. I admittedly was getting worried because I assumed food cravings were a must-have experience. My doctor assured me it doesn’t happen to everyone, and Baby K was doing just great.

With refreshed confidence, I decided to look hard at what I ate every day. I still had some “saltine” days thanks to morning sickness. On the days when I was feeling able, I wanted to make sure that what I was taking in would be great brain food for the growing baby. That means lots of greens, a rainbow of fruits, and salmon. It wasn’t a huge shift from how I usually eat, but I added an actual breakfast (eggs on whole-grain toast) and Greek yogurt in the afternoon. Since I typically skip breakfast instead of just a black coffee and don’t eat that much dairy, these felt like pretty big improvements. I still enjoy my one cup of coffee in the morning.

Second Trimester

We marked the start of the second trimester on vacation in Boca Grande. Almost instantly, it felt like a weight had been lifted. Those pesky symptoms disappeared, and I was left with more energy. As Baby K continued to grow, I noticed my appetite disappearing. It almost felt like she had taken up the real estate where my stomach was supposed to be, leaving less room for food. After eating half of a meal or even a glass of water, I would feel uncomfortably full.

Now, with each passing week, Baby K gets bigger and bigger. I’m happy to report that even though I look visibly pregnant, the majority of my clothes miraculously still fit. I think it’s a combination of sticking with healthy eating habits and naturally gravitating toward oversized clothes. I’ve also stocked up on clothes a few sizes to give myself even more time. Still, I know the days of zipping up my favorite jeans are numbered and I’ll have to hang them up until post-partnum.

Physically, emotionally, and otherwise, so many extraordinary changes will happen in the next few months. This has the makings of such an incredible adventure, and I cannot wait to meet Baby K in person. Who will she look like? What will her interests be? What does the future have in store for her? Lucky for me, I’ll have a whole lifetime to find out!

Love from Paris,
Katie
