Beautiful Stowe, Vermont

Beautiful Stowe, Vermont

Stowe, Vermont, New England, Ski, Maple

Vermont Week continues with an introduction to the beautiful little town of Stowe. After about a 45 minute drive from David’s hometown, and literally around a mountain, we found ourselves in this little ski resort. On previous trips to the Green Mountain State, we had simply driven through. I’m so happy I could convince David to get up early with me to make a special trip and take in the town before the crowds arrived.

Stowe, obviously, is mostly known for it’s skiing. With Mt. Mansfield being the tallest peak in all of Vermont, it will have a little something for even the most advanced skiers. Heads up, that’s definitely not me. Although learning to ski is on my bucket list, I’ve yet to work up the nerve to try it. Maybe next winter! Until then, you’ll find me at the lodge with some hot chocolate.

Stowe, actually Vermont in general, also has an extremely loyal brewery scene. One of David’s favorite things about coming home, apart from seeing his family, is stocking up on his favorite beers and sipping them while he can. He was only slightly disappointed that we got into town way before the breweries even thought about opening. If you find yourself in Stowe this winter, some big names to know in the local brewery world are The Alchemist and Von Trapp. Yes, the family from the Sound of Music. After they escaped Europe, they decided to settle in Vermont.

It may not have all of the hustle and bustle of a bigger city, but Stowe is the perfect example of a quaint, New England town. A small Main Street lined with local boutiques and shops was just what I was looking for. We started our morning at Black Cap Coffee for a chance to wake up. I had the Maple Latte with Soy because what else am I supposed to order in Vermont? From there, we perused the shops, and stocked up on maple fudge and syrup to share with the family. Before we headed out, David indulged me and walked the side streets to get a good look at the historic homes. That’s always one of my favorite activities, no matter the location.

We were there for such a short while. Honestly, it was way too short! It’s always a marvel how much I find to do in even the smallest of towns. I hope on a return trip to Vermont, we’ll be able to stay at one of the ski lodges and have dinner at one of the many New England restaurants. Stowe, I’ll see you soon!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland with Talbots

Walking in a Winder Wonderland with Talbots

I’m back in sunny Florida, but this entire week is dedicated to all things winter to share my most recent trip to Vermont. By my standards, it looked like an absolute winter wonderland. Since David’s childhood home backs right up to 50 plus acres of forest, I was able to do some wandering and exploring. It felt like we had the entire world to ourselves.

Although this wasn’t my first trip to Vermont, I was still in awe of the sheer splendor of it all. I couldn’t have grown up in a different setting from David. I’m used to sand (not snow) and beaches (not mountains). It’s hard to believe that all of this was literally in David’s backyard. He fondly talks about childhood memories of mountain biking, skiing, and snowshoeing.

When you’re dealing with near freezing temperatures and a foot of snow, it’s no walk in the park. It’s important to remember layers because you’ll warm right up, even on the coldest day. I doubled up with this incredibly cozy fair isle sweater and navy tee combo, both from Talbots. Since this was during the holidays, and everything seemed to be a mix of green and red, the pattern on this sweater was so fresh and fun. I love how I’ll be able to wear it well into the winter season. Better still, my sweater is for sale at a huge discount. It can be yours for just under $40!

Another super crucial element to this winter wonderland outfit was the proper headwear. We lose a huge percentage of our body heat through our heads, which makes a cold day feel even colder. By adding just a little something, even a simple beanie, you’ll feel more comfortable outside. This beanie, also from Talbots, is oh so soft and comes in the cheeriest shade of red. I love the contrasting color still worked with my fair isle pattern. One last note.. Don’t forget the proper footwear!

Whether you call the north home or you’ll be visiting at some point this season, get out and enjoy the crisp air! Play in the snow until your cheeks are rosy and your hands are numb! If you’re loving this cold weather inspiration, be sure to check back this entire week while I share all that Vermont has to offer!

Love from Florida,
Katie

Gingham in Newport

Gingham in Newport

gingham, Newport, travel, New England, sweater, J. Crew, blue, navy, preppy, Rhode Island

Sweater || Pants || Heels || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet || Watch

I can’t believe that this is my final post from Rhode Island, but here we are! Among the nautical wharfs and colonial houses, wearing gingham in Newport seemed like such a good idea! Gingham is a print that I save almost exclusively for summer, especially in a light fabric. Still, I wanted to wear these printed pants from J. Crew one last time for the season.

While getting dressed one day, I was playing around with my new rollneck sweater from J. Crew. Since one of my goals for the seasons is to stock up on warm sweaters, this pick seemed like a no brainer. It’s a classic. I decided to size down for a more structured fit and am so glad I made that call. It has that oversized feel, but is still somewhat flattering and form-fitting. Since it comes in a whole rainbow of colors, I think I’ve found my new closet staple for the winter.

Anyways, I was playing dress-up in my closet, trying to think of different ways to style the sweater. When I stumbled upon my gingham pants, it seemed like a perfect pairing. I’m not exactly an expert on fall style, but something about this outfit said New England to me. With my navy Ferragamo heels and Tuckernuck clutch, I made a mental note. Our trip to Newport, to unveil this new outfit, couldn’t come soon enough!

When we finally got to town, we spent an entire morning walking through the historic district. The day started off crisp and I was happy to have been wearing such a warm sweater. Growing up in Florida, I’m definitely not used to seeing colonial architecture. Most of the houses we walked by have been around longer than Florida’s been a state. Even in the historic part of St. Pete, Old Northeast, the houses are only from the 1920s.

This particular house picture is one of my favorites. Located on Mary Street, it’s right in-between the Vanderbilt Hotel and the wharfs. As far as Newport is concerned, I think it’s an ideal location. A plaque on the house lets you know that it’s official called the Christopher Fowler House and has been around since 1801. It’s the color of this home that I love the most. Officially called Newport Blue, I think it’s my new favorite shade.

Gingham in Newport is always a good idea. Even though my trip to New England has long been over, I’m excited to keep styling for the fall weather and try to embrace living in the North.

Love from NYC,
Katie
