There’s something about Weekapaug Inn that makes even the simplest evening feel like a grand occasion. Nestled along the Rhode Island coastline, this historic retreat exudes classic New England charm, offering an intimate escape from the everyday. For our recent date night, I embraced an effortlessly polished look—monochromatic tones with subtle texture play—perfect for a cozy evening of dining, fireside cocktails, and coastal elegance.

A Historic Coastal Gem

Tucked away on the western Rhode Island shore, and only a 90 minute drive from Fairfield County, the Weekapaug Inn is a picture-perfect setting for a romantic getaway. The inn blends understated luxury with a welcoming, lived-in feel, making it the kind of place where time slows down. With panoramic views of Quonochontaug Pond and a serene atmosphere, it’s easy to see why this Relais & Châteaux property is a favorite among those who appreciate refined yet relaxed hospitality. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend retreat or just an evening escape, the charm of the inn is undeniable.

The Curated Dining Experience

Our evening began with dinner at The Restaurant, where every detail— from the candlelit tables to the warm hospitality—felt intentional. The seasonal menu highlights the best of local ingredients, transforming classic New England flavors into elevated dishes that are both comforting and refined. I opted for the duck breast, while David chose a beautifully prepared lamb duo, both perfectly complemented by a glass of earthy red wine. The service was impeccable, striking that ideal balance between attentiveness and allowing us to fully enjoy the moment.

Fireside Cocktails & Coastal Comfort

After dinner, we made our way to the inn’s cozy lounge, where a crackling fire and a curated cocktail list awaited. There’s something undeniably romantic about sipping a well-crafted drink by the fire, the warmth contrasting with the cool coastal air just outside the window. I chose a hibiscus cocktail with hints of sweet and tart—fruity, slightly smoky, and the perfect way to round out the evening. The lounge itself felt like the heart of the inn, filled with hushed conversations, the occasional clink of glasses, and the kind of atmosphere that invites you to linger just a little longer.

Weekapaug Inn has a way of turning a simple night out into an experience—one that lingers in your mind long after you leave. From the intimate setting to the impeccable dining and inviting fireside ambiance, it’s the perfect destination for a refined yet relaxed date night. And with an outfit that balanced classic sophistication with comfort, the night felt just as effortless as it was memorable.

Love from Rhode Island,
Katie

There’s something inherently cozy and effortlessly stylish about the Fisherman Aesthetic. Rugged yet refined, this look embraces the textures and hues of coastal living—think chunky knits, well-worn denim, sturdy boots, and classic accessories that feel as timeless as the sea itself. During my recent stay at the Weekapaug Inn in Rhode Island, I couldn’t help but lean into this trend. Nestled along the shoreline, the inn’s rustic charm and New England elegance made the perfect backdrop for a wardrobe inspired by the seafarers who’ve long graced these waters. The beauty of this trend is in its versatility—whether you’re strolling along the beach, enjoying a fireside cocktail, or simply channeling the essence of coastal living from afar. Here’s how to make the look your own:

The Fisherman Sweater

A chunky knit sweater is the foundation of the Fisherman Aesthetic. The key is texture—opt for thick cable-knit patterns or ribbed designs that add depth and warmth to your look. Wool or wool-blend materials provide the best insulation while maintaining a timeless silhouette. Stick to neutral tones like ivory, taupe, or navy to keep things classic. Whether you go for an oversized fit or something more tailored, a fisherman sweater is effortlessly chic and endlessly wearable.

Relaxed Denim

Pair your knitwear with structured yet relaxed denim for an effortless, lived-in feel. A high-rise, straight-leg silhouette creates a balanced look that flatters all body types. Opt for a medium or dark wash for a classic touch, or go for a faded finish to lean into the rugged, well-worn charm of the aesthetic. Cuffed hems add an extra hint of casual, seafaring style, making this a staple piece for any coastal-inspired wardrobe.

Bean Boots

A true icon of New England style, L.L. Bean Duck Boots are a natural fit for the Fisherman Aesthetic. First designed for hunters and outdoorsmen, these boots have long been a staple for anyone braving damp and chilly conditions. The combination of waterproof rubber lowers and soft leather uppers provides both durability and comfort, making them ideal for both coastal adventures and casual weekend wear. Style them with thick socks peeking out over the top for a cozy, layered effect that balances function and fashion. Whether you’re on the docks or just running errands on a drizzly day, these boots are a timeless investment that never goes out of style.

Canvas Tote

Perfect for carrying your essentials, a durable canvas tote offers both function and style. Inspired by the practicality of old-school maritime bags, these totes are built to last. Whether you’re heading to the farmer’s market or packing up for a seaside escape, a canvas tote completes the fisherman aesthetic while serving as a timeless accessory.

Classic Beanie

No fisherman-inspired outfit is complete without a beanie. Originally worn for warmth by those working in cold, windy conditions at sea, the knit beanie has become a quintessential part of this aesthetic. Choose a ribbed style in wool or cashmere for both function and style. A slightly slouchy fit adds a relaxed touch, while a rolled cuff enhances structure. Feel free to use the beanie as an opportunity to add a bold pop of color to your outfit. I love now a yellow, kelly green, or red pick can really bring an outfit together.

Weatherproof Jacket

Coastal living requires layers, and a weatherproof jacket is essential for channeling true fisherman style. A waxed cotton or water-resistant parka not only offers protection from the elements but also enhances the rugged appeal of this trend. Look for details like oversized pockets, a drawstring waist, or a shearling-lined collar for added warmth and functionality.

Striped Breton Shirt

No coastal-inspired wardrobe is complete without the classic Breton stripe. Originally worn by French sailors in the 19th century, this timeless top has become synonymous with effortless, nautical style. Opt for a boatneck or slightly boxy cut for a relaxed yet polished look. Pair it with high-waisted jeans and a fisherman sweater draped over your shoulders for an extra layer of warmth. The beauty of this piece is its year-round versatility—it’s as perfect under a wool coat in winter as it is with linen shorts in summer.

Fisherman Sandals

A warm-weather take on the fisherman aesthetic, woven leather sandals offer the perfect balance of rugged and refined. Originally designed for practicality—allowing water to drain while providing grip on slippery surfaces—this style has evolved into a timeless staple. Look for pairs with sturdy soles and a classic buckle closure, ensuring both comfort and longevity. Neutral shades like cognac, black, or dark brown work effortlessly with denim, linen, or lightweight knits for a laid-back yet polished look.

Woven Handbag

A woven handbag, whether crafted from straw, rattan, or raffia, adds the perfect textural contrast to the heavier knits and structured outerwear of the Fisherman Aesthetic. While often associated with warm-weather escapes, these natural fiber bags have a timeless, artisanal quality that makes them just as fitting for a coastal-inspired look year-round. Their effortless elegance calls to mind vintage market bags carried by chic Parisians or the well-loved totes of New England summers.

The Weekapaug Inn’s blend of natural beauty, classic New England style, and refined hospitality is the perfect setting for embracing the Fisherman Aesthetic. With sweeping views of the water, cozy fireplaces, and a focus on outdoor exploration, it’s easy to see why this trend feels right at home here. Whether you’re setting out on a nature walk, borrowing a pair of Hunter boots from the lending closet, or simply curling up with a book in one of their Adirondack chairs, the timeless appeal of this aesthetic aligns seamlessly with the experience of staying at the inn.

Love from Rhode Island,
Katie

There’s something undeniably magical about a winter getaway, especially when it involves cozying up in a place as special as the Weekapaug Inn. Nestled along the shoreline in Westerly, Rhode Island, this historic inn offers the perfect mix of coastal charm, refined luxury, and warm hospitality—making it an ideal retreat any time of year. I had the incredible opportunity to experience a winter stay at the Weekapaug Inn, and from the moment I arrived, I was completely enchanted. From the crackling fireplaces to the sweeping water views, every detail felt like an invitation to slow down and savor the season.

History and About the Property

Steeped in New England tradition, the Weekapaug Inn has been a beloved coastal retreat since it first opened its doors in 1899. Originally built as a summer resort, the inn has been beautifully restored to maintain its classic charm while offering modern comforts that make every stay unforgettable. Set along the Quonochontaug Pond and Atlantic Ocean, the property feels like a hidden gem—tucked away from the hustle and bustle, yet still within easy reach of Westerly’s charming downtown and nearby Watch Hill. Conveniently located just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from New York City and less than two hours from Southwest Connecticut, the inn’s proximity makes it the perfect weekend retreat for those looking to escape to the coast without venturing too far from home. Whether you’re drawn to its rich history, stunning waterfront location, or commitment to sustainability (the inn operates as a Relais & Châteaux property with a strong focus on local and seasonal offerings), Weekapaug Inn is truly one of Rhode Island’s most remarkable stays.

Accomodations

Each room at the Weekapaug Inn feels like a perfect balance of timeless elegance and cozy retreat. During our visit, we stayed in the Purple Martin Suite, which offered plenty of room for our family of three. The space was beautifully appointed, with a cozy sitting area, elegant furnishings, and stunning views that made our stay all the more special. I was immediately struck by the attention to detail—from the plush bedding to the nautical-inspired dĂ©cor that pays homage to the inn’s seaside surroundings. If you’re planning a romantic getaway, consider one of the Fenway Suites, which feature a private balcony and unobstructed water views. For larger family stays, the Carriage Houses or Signature Suites are perfect choices. These are the largest accommodations on the property and can even be combined to accommodate bigger parties. After all, the more the merrier!

Dining

One of the highlights of my stay was the incredible dining experience at the Weekapaug Inn. For dinner, we started with cocktails and fresh raw oysters—because when in Rhode Island, right? Both of our meals were impeccably prepared, showcasing the inn’s dedication to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The service was just as exceptional, making the meal even more enjoyable.

Breakfast was an absolute treat, especially as the winter sun shone through the naturally lit dining space. I couldn’t resist ordering the Weekapaug Omelet, which featured lobster (can you believe?!), feta, and spinach—a truly decadent way to start a New England morning. For a more casual dining experience, the onsite bar offers a fantastic menu of bites and sandwiches that can be enjoyed fireside. There’s nothing cozier than sipping a warm drink by the fire while indulging in a perfectly crafted meal.

Amenities and Activities

One of the standout features of the Weekapaug Inn is seemingly endless activities! From the daily nature walks and history tours, these guided experiences allow guests to truly connect with the coastal landscape and learn more about the rich heritage of the area. Another thoughtful touch? The Hunter Borrowing Closet, which means you don’t have to worry about packing your own boots while exploring the property’s stunning surroundings.

While winter offers its own kind of magic, I’m already looking forward to my next visit to take full advantage of their complimentary bicycles, boating, and beach chairs in the warmer months. Honestly, though, my absolute favorite thing to do at the Weekapaug Inn? Simply sitting in one of their waterfront Adirondack chairs, a crisp glass of white wine in hand, and soaking in the breathtaking views.

My winter stay at the Weekapaug Inn was nothing short of magical. There’s something about the slower pace of the season that allows you to truly appreciate the charm of this historic property, from its inviting interiors to its spectacular waterfront setting. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a relaxing solo retreat, or a cozy weekend with family, the Weekapaug Inn delivers an experience that feels both luxurious and deeply personal. I left feeling completely rejuvenated and already dreaming of my next visit—because once you’ve experienced the warmth and beauty of this coastal retreat, it’s impossible not to want to return.

Katie
