Thinking of NYC

Thinking of NYC

NYC, New York City, City, opportunity

Shirt || Skirt || Heels || Handbag (similar) || Earrings || Bracelet || Watch

Since this global event has started, I’ve heard several times “aren’t you thankful that you still aren’t in New York?” With all that I see on the news, I completely agree with that sentiment. I’ve often said that the universe told us to move back to St. Pete, and that seems more true than ever! On the other hand, I know it’s not that simple. There were things that David and I absolutely loved about living in the city, and St. Pete really can’t recreate those things. Occasionally, I feel this wave of panic wondering if we actually did make the right decision. And yes, it’s happening even during this crazy point in time.

I want to chalk this up to cabin fever, some mild situational anxiety, or maybe even very watered down survival’s guilt because the city I called home now looks like a ghost town. Whatever the root cause, I thought sharing my love for NYC with you would have some therapeutic effects. Please bear with me.

NYC, New York City, City, opportunity
The Neighborhoods

When living in NYC, we specifically called the Upper East Side home. While there are so many neighborhoods to know and love, the UES had so much to offer! A lifetime’s worth of museums? Check! Quick access to Central Park? Check! Perfectly manicured streets? Double Check! One of my favorite weekend rituals was grabbing my coffee to-go (either from Butterfield Market or Ralph’s) and aimlessly wander. Even though I did this multiple times a week, I still feel like I didn’t take full advantage! Better still, even going a few neighborhoods over, like to the UWS or Union Square, would create a whole different vibe and list of things to do.

The History

A city with deep rooted history just speaks to me. It’s probably why I love New Orleans and Newport so much! When I travel, I always try and learn about the history of my next destination. “Oldest bar” or “oldest restaurant” are often in my search history. That was one of the biggest appeals of living in New York City. There was no shortage of traditional restaurants with pages upon pages of history to visits. I loved exploring any particular neighborhood and spotting a historic marker. For example, one of my favorite coffee shops, Devoción in the Flatiron District, just happens to be across the street from Teddy Roosevelt’s childhood home. There were countless little gems like this all around Manhattan.

The Fashion

I almost have no words for the amount of fashion you’ll find in New York. It goes without saying. Every time I stepped out of my apartment, I would come across countless impeccably chic outfits. Wandering down Madison Avenue, where some of the most exclusive designers in the world call home, could send me into an inspiration overload. Between uptown, midtown, and downtown, you’ll also find different styles that speak to the neighborhood that you’re in. All have their special place in the city culture. Since St. Pete is so laidback, dressing in that metropolitan style can raise a few eyebrows. Still, I love turning to some of my favorite NYC bloggers, like Krystal Bick, Allie Provost and Blair Eadie for a taste of the city.

The Buzz

This is probably the aspect of New York City living I miss the most! Calling it ‘the city that never sleeps’ is not a misnomer. There’s always something to do, something new to see, and interesting people to meet. When I first moved back to St. Pete, it felt refreshing to have some peace and quiet. Now that the dust from our move has settled, I find myself feeling jittery over missing that energy. The other angle is that the potential is limitless in New York. There are so many opportunities, especially in terms of a career in writing, my daydream job!

My pictures for this post are glaringly NOT in New York City. Since I was able to live a block away from the MET Museum and its famous steps, I thought I would try and find something similar in St. Pete. This is the Museum of Fine Arts. It’s kind of like the MET, but to a much smaller scale. It will always be one of my favorite buildings in the Sunshine City, especially since our wedding reception was held here. Since I can’t be in NYC right now, I’m trying to find small pieces of the Big Apple locally that give me joy. Even if you’ve never been there, find the best NY style pizza your town has to offer, make your favorite cocktail, and dance to Frank Sinatra in your most elegant outfit. I simply can’t wait to get back to the big city, but until then, I’ll find it wherever I am.

Katie

NYC Style in Florida

NYC Style in Florida

NYC, Style, Florida, Tweed, Preppy

Jacket || Cami || Jeans || Wedges || Handbag || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

Although I am so happy to be back in Florida, there some things I miss about living in NYC. That year and a half away was short, but I feel like I grew so much as a person. One of the biggest changes was about my own personal sense of style. It shouldn’t come as a surprise. NYC is practically the fashion capitol of the world and inspiration is everywhere. Since moving back, I’m trying to find a balance between laidback St. Pete and my love for NYC style. Let’s take a quick dive into how I (try to) maintain NYC style in Florida.

NYC: Tweed Jackets

2019 in NYC was the year of the tweed! I simply couldn’t get enough of this preppy staple. It is just so timeless, classic, and has a Chanel like quality. I may not be in a position to buy Chanel clothing, but I just can’t give up tweed! This little jacket, a much cheaper alternative from H&M, is so great to throw on for a night out. It’s almost the only extra layer I need in Florida.

FLA: Espadrilles Wedges

A destination city calls for a resort pair of shoes! Espadrilles have been my go to shoe of choice since high school. Flats, wedges, or sandals, I find them to be the most comfortable shoe style out there! Although they are normally seasonal, I’ve been able to wear them almost everyday in 2020. Word of caution though, don’t wear them on rainy days! Other than that, they can pair with just about everything. Castañer espadrilles are the absolute best!

NYC: The Color Black

If there was an official color of New York City, it would absolutely be black! Since it’s the best color for hiding dust and grim, it only makes sense. It’s also incredibly chic and flattering. While it’s always the best choice for a hot Florida day, I still want to wear it a little more often I used to. I’m loving this black eyelet sundress from Topshop.

FLA: Rattan Handbags

I’ve dusted off my Cult Gaia bag and I’ve been using it for almost every night out. Even though I’ve had it for a few years now, I still get compliments each time. Rattan and wicker accents are my jam! Adding this fun kind of element makes me feel like I’m on the perfect beach vacation. On my rattan shopping list are these fun earrings from Tuckernuck and I’ve already been loving my wicker loafers from Christmas.

Although I would never say to completely change the way you dress based on where you live, I’ve loved the way my tastes have shifted. By combining the laidback culture of my city with the chicest elements of New York, I can feel like the most fashionable gal in the Sunshine City.

Katie

Staying at the TWA Hotel

Staying at the TWA Hotel

TWA Hotel, JFK Airport, Travel, Hotel, 1960's

Dress || Heels || Clutch || Sunglasses || Earrings || Bracelet || Watch

Before our trip up to Vermont, David and I decided to take a quick staycation at the new TWA Hotel at JFK Airport. I’ve been wanting to stay here since it opened and an overnighter before our early flight to Burlington seemed like the perfect opportunity. We got there extra early to take full advantage of everything the spot had to offer. Since I first started sharing pictures, I’ve been flooded with requests to share a full review. Here are some quick honest thoughts about staying at the TWA Hotel.

The Hotel

If you’re not familiar with the concept, the TWA Hotel is in the space of the old TWA terminal at JFK Airport and is the only on-site hotel. Leaning into the heyday of the now gone airline, it is entirely dedicated as a time machine to 1962.

Admittedly, this hotel isn’t the easiest to find. Make your way to Terminal 5, present day Jet Blue, via the AirTrain and follow the signs along the outdoor pathway. When we entered the space, it felt like an immediate teleport to a bygone decade. Flight attendants and pilots, dressed to match the era, serve as concierge and can point you to where you need to go.

Our Room

The self check-in system is an extremely quick, almost too quick, process. Scan your own card keys and off you can go to your room. Since there are two wings, take extra special attention to which one your room is in. We missed that critical piece of information and happened to have luckily made the correct guess.

When we got to our room, we were greeted by a beautiful space that combines modern day with 60’s influences. Since it was only for the night, we decided on the standard room, giving us a view of the airport, right next to the service road. The floor to ceiling windows offered all of the privacy you would need with black-out curtains at the push of a button. More importantly, the room was amazingly quiet, even with the busy location. The hotel brags the second thickest windows in the world and really helps make your stay enjoyable.

The Aesthetic

Like I said, the entire hotel maintains a 1960’s motif, from the staff uniforms to the in-room magazine options. Currently, they have an exhibit of past flight attendant uniforms and a recreation of a 1960s American living room. In the living room, all of the pieces are original to the period, but you have an option to play dress up with pieces that seem straight out of Mad Men. It’s very clear to see that the aesthetic was the foundation of the hotel.

Food Options

Since we were there for the entire day, we were able to enjoy the full gambit of their dining options. Your day can begin with a cup of Intelligentsia coffee and croissant. For lunch, we were able to sample their in-progress Food Hall with Vinny‘s Paninis. I say in-progress because the food hall has several open stands where I’m sure different restaurants will fill, in the future. As of out visit, sandwiches and bagels are your only options.

Our dinner took place at the on-site Paris Café. Celebrated chef Jean-Gorges, the brains of Manhattan’s ABC Kitchen, is also behind this restaurant. The menu is inspired by in-flight meals of the era. We shared their turkey burger and spinach pizza, which were both delicious. The crown jewel of our meal was the generous slice of carrot cake to nicely round out our night. As this is the only dinner option at the hotel, I highly recommend making reservations well in advance.

Cocktail Hour

Prior to our dinner, I had reservations at the Connie Cocktail Lounge. I was so excited for this experience! Parked outside on the hotel’s tarmac, we grabbed drinks in a completely refurbished 1958 Lockheed Constellation. At the time, it was the ultimate mode of air-transportation, even serving as Air Force One for President Eisenhower. Inside, the lounge is filled with plush seats, a nice little menu, and raises the question, “why can’t all flights be like this?”

What To Improve On

Now, because I want to keep a realistic spin on our stay, I thought it was important to share elements that I thought could use some improvement. After I booked our room, I admit, I became a little apprehensive after reading Jennifer Lake’s honest review from when they first opened. A lot of concerns she brought up I can chalk up to being a brand new hotel on the scene.

I had already mentioned the confusion at check-in, which we easily mended. We also saw a few examples around the hotel where it almost seemed like they were still in the building stages: walls were being patched up and some construction dust hadn’t been cleaned up. Over all, it didn’t ruin our stay, but something that our eyes were immediately drawn too. On a separate note, the lobby area only had one outlet to be found… Not exactly ideal for the weary traveler.

TWA Hotel, JFK Airport, Travel, Hotel, 1960's

Overall, I highly recommend staying at the TWA Hotel if you’re already at JFK Airport. After talking with other guests, I learned that they either had a long layover, a late international flight, or the first domestic flight out. Even if you’re here for a few hours, it serves as a nice reprieve from the non-glamourous elements of travel. About the little details to improve on? I’m sure this hotel will only get better with time and serve as the perfect oasis at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Katie
