NYC Halloween: Liz Lemon

October 9, 2019

NYC Halloween: Liz Lemon

NYC, Halloween, Liz Lemon, Tina Fey, casual, sneakers, 30 Rock, New York City, NBC, J. Crew, Tretorn, eyeglasses

Blazer || Striped Tee || Jeans || Similar Sneakers || Similar Eyeglasses || Tote Bag || Earrings || Watch

Even before I moved to New York City, nothing made me laugh more than NBC’s 30 Rock. Tina Fey and her star character, Liz Lemon, are both city icons. With her sense of humor, sarcasm, and nerdy interests, there is something about her that I really relate with. Continuing on with my closet Halloween costumes, I took the train down to Rockefeller Center for a very Lemon blog post. I promise, this may one of the easiest costumes ever to pull off.

Must Have: Brown Framed Eyeglasses

Although known to go without her brown frames, eyeglasses are one of her signature pieces. It completely finishes a Liz Lemon outfit and is absolutely mandatory. My frames are years old and have way too heavy of a prescription to be worn everyday. For a pair of glasses that will work if you’re 20/20, I recommend these blue light classics from The Book Club.

Must Have: Navy Blazer

It can get chilly at Studio 6H, where Liz Lemon’s show is filmed. Not to mention, she has put in countless sleepless nights to get the writing done. To stay warm, she often has an extra layer on hand to keep warm. A simple navy blazer, like this one from J. Crew, can definitely be seen in her closet.

Must Have: Comfy Sneakers

Have you seen 30 Rock? That woman is always running around to put out a metaphorical fire at least once an episode. That’s why Liz Lemon believes in comfy sneakers! Tretorns are some of the comfiest shoes you can find, but this pair seems extra Tina Fey worth.

Strongly Encouraged: Dark Wash Jeans

Something I love the most about Liz Lemon is her casual style. She only wears dresses and skirts when she absolutely has to, and normally it’s for an event. Be like Liz and grab your comfiest pair of dark was jeans. I’m thinking a straight leg or boot cut would be best.

Optional: Oversized Tote Bag

Carrying around piles and piles of scripts in sort of Liz Lemon’s speciality. Normally she will throw the piles into any old tote bag, but work with what you have. At the very least, it gives you an added level of convenience at your next costume party.

Optional: Snack Foods

Much like me, Liz Lemon is a compulsive eater and lover of snack foods. She is partial to Sabor de Soledad. Even though they are completely unreal, I envision they are closest to Cheetos or, if you can stomach them, Takis.

And just like that, you’re dressed like Liz Lemon. It may not be the most glamorous of Halloween costume ideas, but I promise you’ll be the comfiest person in the room. My NYC Halloween costume series will continue next week with another icon who is equally fashionable in real life. Any guesses?

Love from NYC,
Katie

NYC Halloween: Holly Golightly

October 2, 2019

NYC Halloween: Holly Golightly

NYC, Halloween, Holly Golightly, Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, black gown, costume, New York, Fifth Avenue

Gown (similar) || Heels || Handbag (similar) || Sunglasses || Earrings || Bracelet

Optional: Opera Gloves || Pearl Necklace || White Scarf || Coffee Mug

Let me set the scene for you. Moon River is playing in the background. Fifth Avenue in New York is completely vacant on an early morning. A lone taxi cab pulls up to the flagship Tiffany’s store, where Audrey Hepburn emerges in a stunning black gown and opera gloves. This opening to Breakfast at Tiffany’s is simply iconic and so fun to recreate for myself. The view from the street has changed a lot since it was filmed in the 1960’s, but the opulence will always be there.

I don’t need a special occasion to feel inspired by Audrey, but Halloween definitely is a good excuse. As much as I love Halloween, I’ve never been one for obvious costumes. I find it so much more satisfying to pull what I already have in my closet to play dress-up. To show how easy it can be, I’m sharing ‘costumes’ from my closet, inspired by my favorite NYC characters. This week, I’m channeling none other than Holly Golightly, although completely different than last year. Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need to recreate this look.

NYC, Halloween, Holly Golightly, Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, black gown, costume, New York, Fifth Avenue
Must Have: Stunning Black Gown

The perfect Holly Golightly dress is going to come in many different forms. I personally think the best recreations are done with black, gown-length dresses. They are sleeveless and preferably backless. If you look in your closet and don’t have anything that quite matches, a classic black dress will still do the job. For my dress, I turned to Rent the Runway and couldn’t have been happier with this gown from Rochas.

Must Have: Classic Black Pumps

If you don’t have a pair of classic black pumps already, now is the time to do so. I wear mine at least once a week, no matter the season. Because they are one of the most versatile pair of shoes you can own, I believe you should splurge and go for a pair that is comfortable. After all, Holly Golightly was able to parade all around the city in her heels. I cannot recommend Sarah Flint enough for that very reason! They are the comfiest pair of heels I own and come in three different heel heights to fit your style. For $45 off your pair, use the code KATIE45.

Must Have: Oversized Black Sunglasses

Holly Golightly was known to wear her signature sunglasses at all times of the day. Rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, you can pull off the same look too. I’ve previously dubbed my black Karen Walker sunglasses my ‘Jackie Kennedy’ pair, but they would absolutely work for a Breakfast at Tiffany’s tribute.

Strongly Encouraged: Statement Pearl Necklace

Sadly, I completely forgot to wear my statement pearl necklace from J. Crew! Although I’m so happy with how my recreation turned out, having just a little more glitz would have helped me perfect this look. Even though I love a single string of pearls, try and find a necklace that is a little over the top. After all, what would Holly do?

Optional: Black Opera Gloves

I’ll be honest, I definitely don’t have a pair of opera gloves in my closet. Since the fun of this series is shopping what you already own, I decide to skip them. If you are a purest and want the closest costume you can find, this pair of opera gloves from Amazon is perfect and won’t break the bank.

Optional: New York Coffee & Croissant

A really distinct moment in the Breakfast at Tiffany’s opening is Holly taking a big bite of a croissant and a quick sip of coffee. We can assume she’s been out all night and the woman needs some sustenance. Although any to-go cup of coffee will do, you can grab a pack of the NYC version on Amazon. After Halloween, they can still help you daydream that you’re in the Big Apple.

Throughout the month of October, I’ll be recreating more iconic NYC female characters. I already have a few planned out in my head, but am always open to suggestions. When you think of New York, who are the top fictional characters that come to mind?

Love from NYC,
Katie

My Fall Bucket List

My Fall Bucket List

My Fall Bucket List, NYC, autumn, Halloween, Central Park, Hudson River, Cold Spring, travel

Dress (also) || Heels || Handbag (similar) || Earrings || Bracelet

Welcome to October! Call me a traditionalist, but I don’t think the fall season truly starts until the 1st of October. In my mind, September still feels like summer and I try to hold off on autumn decor. With a new month, I’m finally ready for a new season. It may be my favorite in the city and I can’t wait to take full advantage of my new found free-time. Be sure to take a peek at my city bucket list.

Visit the Met Cloisters.

I’m hoping to check this off of my list this weekend. Found at the very top of Manhattan, the Cloisters is an extension of the MET. Part castle, part art museum, it also offers sweeping views of the Hudson River. The fall seems like the perfect time to explore and hopefully do some leaf peeping.

Enjoy the fall colors in Central Park.

Not to be outdone, Central Park has its own gorgeous display of fall leaves. Last year, the city had a freak snowstorm in the very beginning of November and I felt like the colors were gone all too soon. Since we live right next to the park, you can bet that I’ll make any excuse to visit over the next few months.

Spend Thanksgiving in New Orleans.

Already booked and I’m so ready to go. Better yet? My best friend, slash Maid-of-Honor, will be meeting me there too. You probably don’t need any remind that NOLA is my favorite city. I’ve been there for almost every major holiday, but this is my first Thanksgiving in town.

Stock up on new sweaters.

This Florida girl still isn’t prepared to dress for winter. I’ve been told countless times, mostly by my Vermonter husband, that we had a very mild winter last year. Since I’m just assuming that this one is going to be a real doozy, I’m panicking early and stock piling warm sweaters. So far, my top destinations have been Old Navy, J. Crew, and Vineyard Vines.

Take the ferry to Cold Spring.

Hopefully, I can cross this off my list sometime in October. From what I’ve heard, this is a must-do experience. Starting at the Wall Street pier, we’ll be enjoying a relaxing ferry ride, among the fall foliage, to Cold Spring. Up the Hudson River from the city, it just sounds like the perfect day trip away from the hustle and bustle.

Try a new pumpkin recipe.

I think I have a pretty good handle on a few key pumpkin recipes. In college, my chocolate chip pumpkin muffins were always highly requested by friends. Since I haven’t really added to my skillset in a while, I’m looking to find a new recipe to master and dazzle with at the holidays. Any suggestions are always appreciated.

Have a Halloween movie marathon.

Nothing too scary though. I’m actually a sucker for cheesy 80s horror movies, mostly because I’m seen them a dozen times. I’m also partial to Alfred Hitchcock, but who doesn’t love Hocus Pocus. This year, I’m planning on grabbing David, an extra large bowl of popcorn, and have an all-day movie marathon.

Take a family photo for the holidays.

Originally, I was thinking this would be nice for just David and I (plus Tripp). We failed to send out holiday cards last year and I don’t want to miss out again. Now I’m thinking, since the whole family will already be in New Orleans, it would be nice to include my parents and brother too.

Even though I’m finally ready to embrace fall, the weather report says it will be close to 90 degrees tomorrow. That’s just how it goes sometimes. The weather in New York is honestly just so unpredictable. I’ll still be looking forward to the cooler weather and checking off on my bucket list along the way.

Love from NYC,
Katie
