In the summer, I can definitely say that I practically live in gingham. It’s the perfect pattern to wear on a hot summer day and the breezier the better! Since I’m clearly in denial that Fall is actually here, I wanted to try to think of a way to rewear my flowiest of gingham pieces, this midi faux-wrap skirt from LOFT. The color is the saving grace of this skirt. Black instantly looks more ready for colder weather and I had just the top to pair with it. If this silk button down shirt from J. Crew isn’t in your closet yet, you need to get shopping right away! It comes in 5 gorgeous colors and is simply such a good staple to have. I’ve recently figured out that gingham also comes in flannel. Duh Katie! I guess I’ll have to go shopping ASAP.

I have been wearing these loafers that I snagged from the Nordstrom sale over and over again! They are from Louise et Cie, but I think they make for the perfect Gucci dupe. When I was in Italy this summer, I had convinced myself that I was coming home with a pair of Gucci loafers to call my own. I think I sat in one of their Rome stores for over an hour trying to decide what to do… I absolutely loved them, but hated how their particular style looked on my feet. I couldn’t explain it, but knew I was not ready to drop so much money on a pair of shoes I wasn’t 100% in love with. The Louise et Cie pair made for a great alternative. I love the honeycomb detail on the buckle and, once I broke them in, they became one of the most comfortable pair of shoes I have in my closet. I’ve been eyeing the same style in Maroon for a while now and may just have to pull the trigger!

Now, on to my favorite accessory and partner-in-crime, Tripp! You meet him for the first time in this post back in Spring, but I think he needed another time to shine. I would not be functioning during this transition to NYC without my pup. I mean, just look at him! That face of his is the best thing to come home to after a day of running around the city. Now, one of the biggest questions I get is, how has he adjusted to city living? After all, he is just a country dog from Alabama who had a pretty sweet life living in the Sunshine State. Well, I’m pretty sure he absolutely loves it here! Basset Hounds are a pretty rare sight in the Big Apple, especially one as big as him, and people are always wanting to stop us and say hi on our walks. Tripp just eats up all of the attention, but I’m thinking it’s starting to go to his head. “No Tripp, you’re actually not a celebrity and you’re public is not waiting for you outside.” Because we live right next to Central Park, Tripp is still able to enjoy some green space every once in a while and now that the weather is getting cooler, our walks are finally able to get a little longer.

Yep, life is pretty good for the world’s largest Basset Hound and city life definitely suites him. He has never seen snow before and I can only imagine how he’s going to react to that. Don’t worry, I’m going to be the weird dog-mom and capture every second of it.

Katie

Holly Golightly Inspired

The beauty of living in New York City is that inspiration is literally everywhere! Walking down the street, I see so much style that I instantly want to make my own and put my own spin. It’s so tempting to just have my phone out at all times, ready to snap the quick pic.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about those signature movies that take place in the Big Apple. To me there nothing more iconic than Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This is the Audrey Hepburn movie that all ‘basic’ girls know and love. I’m guilty of watching this movie dozens and dozens of time, and probably will watch it a dozen more.

In my exploring around the neighborhood, I was tickled to discover that Holly Golightly’s apartment is just down the road from me. Of course, I had to see for myself. Sadly, the buildings around it were under construction, but I instantly started daydreaming of swanky parties and festive looks. If you didn’t know, Holly’s walkup brownstone apartment building is actually a private residence town home, but a girl can dream.

My favorite outfit in that entire movie may be when Holly and Paul Varjack are off to explore the city. Her orange midi coat and brown fur hat instantly make me think of a crisp fall day that I can’t wait to experience for myself in NYC. Now, while I don’t have the coat or fur hat, I did find this gorgeous orange shirt dress from H&M. The midi length and button details absolutely gives it a coat vibe, and can be worn much more often. The belt accent cinches the waist and creates a flattering, vintage feel.

Because leopard print is starting to come back for the season, I added my favorite clutch from BP. I’ve had this little bag for so long, but it continues to be on trend and oh-so functional. It’s the best leopard print you can find for under $50. It even has a faux fur feel to give itself even more texture.

If you haven’t seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I have some homework for you. Go to Amazon and snag yourself a copy, it’s a staple movie everyone needs to have in their collection. For extra credit, you should definitely read the short novel by Truman Capote. After you watch, be sure to let me know what your favorite look was in the entire movie.

Katie

My NYC Update: Vol. 1

Okay, so I’ve been in the Big Apple for nearly three weeks now and first impressions are good! I don’t start at my new teaching job until after Labor Day so, I’ve been enjoying getting to know my new surroundings. My scope has been narrowed in onto my Upper East Side neighborhood, but it’s just a starting point. As I visit around NYC, I want to be sure to share what I find with you. At the end of every month, I’ll be posting my New York update for the restaurants, bars, and whatever else we stumble upon. The beauty is that the material is endless and practically writes itself! Here goes nothing!

Coffee

  • Variety (1269 Lexington Ave, UES): Variety has become one of my go-to coffee shops since moving to the UES. It’s right by the subway and has plenty of room to bring your laptop and get work done. Many-a blog post have been typed here already.
  • Birch (171 E 88th Street, UES): I’ve been to a few Birch Coffee spots, but this location is by far the closest. It’s a great spot to pop in and grab a cold brew to go. I’m also a fan of their trivia tipping system.
  • Brooklyn Diamond Coffee (349 W Broadway, Soho): David and I popped in here, desperately needing water, on a hot afternoon downtown, but when I say the words ‘New Orleans Style Cold Brew,’ I was helpless. In true NOLA fashion, they add a touch of chicory root to their coffee to give a chocolatey taste.

Drinks

  • Uva (1486 2nd Avenue, UES): I just loved the wine bar in St. Pete and finding one that measured up was going to be a tall order. Uva rose to the challenge. Although it only opened in 2005, when you walk inside, you’re instantly teleported to an old world Italian restaurant, with the charm and menu to match. David and I sat at the bar, enjoyed a fantastic bottle of Malbec, and nibbled on bruschetta. It was like we were in Lake Como all over again! Major perks for them being open late, just in case you have a sudden wino craving.
  • Kaia (1614 3rd Avenue, UES): Another wine bar, but totally different! We shift gears to a South African wine list with equally great food! In fact, they have been Michelin recommended for the past three years. I cannot wait to have brunch there ASAP.
  • Infirmary (1720 2nd Avenue, UES): As you may know, New Orleans is one of my favorite cities and will always have a very special place in my heart. I often joke with David about he wasn’t listening when I said I wanted to move to New Orleans, not New York. When I came across this Cajun-Creole styled restaurant, I couldn’t have been happier. They have all of the classic NOLA drinks that make my heart happy (hello Hurricane), but the Mardi Gras Krewe inspired drinks were too darn good!

Food

  • La Pulperia (1626 2nd Avenue, UES): We ran into this restaurant when I was having some major Latin American food cravings, as usual. The food is absolutely solid! I highly recommend the Hanger Steak, on the Las Tablas menu. You get 12 ounces of perfectly cooked steak and their five side items. The celery root gratin was my favorite.
  • Selena Rosa (1712 2nd Avenue, UES): I’m making the quick jump from Latin American food to Mexican food for Selena Rosa. Mexican is my go-to cuisine and this place does not disappoint. The food was exactly what you need and paired perfectly with the obligatory mango margarita.
  • San Matteo (1739 2nd Avenue, UES): You know a pizza joint is good when all of the staff and customers are speaking Italian. This hole-in-the-wall place serves some of the best pizza on this side of the Atlantic Ocean and made me feel like I was back in Italy. It has become a weekly stop for us and I’m making my way through their extensive pizza menu.

If you have any NYC foodie recommendations be sure to let me know! I’ve got a food bucket list a mile long already and I’m always looking to grow it.

Love from NYC,
Katie
