Maybe it’s a sign of getting older, but I love going to top destinations in their off-season. You can experience the best they offer, minus the crowds and insane surcharges. A few weeks ago, we found ourselves in the Hamptons after a spontaneous invite from friends to join them at their vacation home. How could I possibly say no to that? The days were perfectly quiet, giving us a weekend to recharge, but we still got out and had some fun along the way. I’ve learned that a date night at the Canoe Place Inn is always a good idea, especially when good friends join you.

Welcome to the Canoe Place

The site of the Canoe Place has been a Hampton Bays inn since 1697. Since then, it has hosted Revolutionary War soldiers, celebrities, and presidents. Over 300 years of tradition and love have been brought into the revitalized space. Located on six pristine acres and across the street from the water, you can consider it the ‘first spot, out east,’ It’s a wonderful welcome to Hampton’s life. As you arrive via their fleet of new Grand Wagoneers, you’ll admire quiet gardens, an enviable pool, and an interior design that has perfected the modern farmhouse aesthetic. It felt like Ina Garden or Martha Stewart could appear at any second, and I loved every piece of it.

Drinks at Good Ground Tavern

We joined our friends at the Good Ground Tavern on a cozy winter night. This on-site restaurant at the Canoe Place Inn instantly creates a perfectly intimate feel. The cocktails (and mocktails) were poured, and we found a cozy spot next to the roaring fire. While plenty of other couples were in for an intimate date night, the four of us were laughing and exchanging stories in a way that only good friends can. There’s so much I love about this space, and the interior design may be at the top of my list. In step with the hotel’s colonial roots, the aesthetic feels true that but with a modern twist. Think rich tones, warm woods, and classic elements that will always stand the test of time.

This may be a shorter blog post than usual, but is still filled with so many freshly made memories. After a few rounds of drinks, we headed off to another local Hampton Bays spot. I know another repeat visit to the Canoe Place Inn will be in the near future. Whether during the peak summer season or in the quieter off-season, this historic hotel is the perfect home base for a stay in the Hamptons.

Love from the Hamptons,
Katie

Swan, Truman Capote, Upper East Side, NYC, Lee Radziwell, Babe Paley

In the heart of the Upper East Side, with stunning townhomes and limitless shopping potential, it’s easy to daydream about the women who used to rule these pristine avenues, namely Truman Capote’s Swans. FEUD: Capote vs. the Swans, based on the book by Laurence Leamer, has become a new source of inspiration. I want to channel the spirit of 1960s elegance and emulate the grace of C.Z. Guest, Babe Paley, Lee Radziwill, and Slim Keith. The sidewalks that once witnessed their poise can quickly feel like your own personal runway, especially when you dress the part. To dress like your favorite 60s socialite, here are ten must-have pieces to have on rotation in your wardrobe.

Silk Scarves

In the essence of true Swan style, the silk scarf, especially Hermes, is a nod to the sophistication of Babe Paley, Capote’s most beloved swan. Rumor has it she was the first to knot her Hermes onto her handbag on a hot summer day, creating a trend. Draped over a trench coat or protecting your hair from the humidity, it feels appropriate to have this wardrobe essential at the top of the list.

Structured Handbag

The structured handbag will always be a staple for me and is a nod to the quiet luxury that the Swans practically invented. If you can’t splurge on Chanel or Hermes, many brands and styles are much more budget-friendly, like Demellier. After all, it’s not truly about the price tag but about the timeless sense of taste that won’t get old as you stroll down Fifth Avenue.

Monochromatic Outfits

Monochromatic elegance, like countless outfit ideas from J. Crew, pays homage to the Swans’ preference for refined simplicity. Channeling Lee Radziwill’s grace, an all-black or camel ensemble becomes a canvas for sophisticated accessories. It’s a nod to an era of simplicity as the ultimate status symbol.

Timeless Shift Dress

There’s something about the classic shift dress that I will always associate with the 60s and 70s. I think a simple black shift is a staple for anyone’s wardrobe. It can be styled with espadrilles for the summer or paired with tights and tall boots in the winter. It can be dressed up or down and with any accessory. I’m crushing on a few LBDs from Tuckernuck, especially any with impeccable little details.

Brooches and Pins

Now is the time to borrow some accessories from your grandma’s closet. Although they haven’t been that popular recently, brooches are ripe for a comeback. Added to a jacket lapel or scarf, it can instantly elevate an outfit, giving a nod to 1960s fashion. Vintage would be my preferred route, so peruse your local thrift store with abandon to find that diamond in the rough piece.

Classic Pumps

When strolling through the streets of Manhattan, having the proper footwear is a must! Classic silhouettes, like block heels and ballet flats, will last the test of time and work well with almost any outfit. Sarah Flint is one of my favorite brands that perfectly embodies Swan style. If C.Z. Guest and Slim Keith were around today, they would easily give this brand a star of approval.

Oversized Sunglasses

Popularized by Jackie Kennedy, sister of Lee Radziwell, the oversized sunglasses have stood the test of time. Acting as a shield from the rumors the Swans faced, they are one of my favorite accessories. That is especially true during the summertime. My current favorite brand is always Krewe. Grab a styling pair that best fits your facial features and hide from the paparazzi on Madison Avenue.

As I continue to watch FEUD: Capote vs. the Swans, I am taking copious notes on the fashion inspiration. Let the elegance of silk scarves and structured handbags resonate. Walk in the classic pumps that echo the Swans’ footsteps, epitomizing the grace of Upper East Side fashion.

Love from New York,
Katie

Over the weekend, we, our four-legged friend included, headed to the Hamptons to spend some time with our close friends. Although it was the wintery off-season, it felt so good to have some change of scenery and a quiet setting. It was an unseasonably warm weekend, allowing for a fun adventure. I even got to dress up in my favorite coastal grandmother looks to have the whole Nancy Meyers experience. Here’s a quick recap of our wonderful winter Hamptons weekend.

Bagels and Coffee for Breakfast

Is there anything more ‘Long Island’ than bagels and coffee? Or, should I say cawh-fee? The real question is, what’s your go-to order? For me, an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese is ALWAYS the right call. Tripp, our Basset Hound, was also a huge fan and couldn’t get enough of the cozy smells coming from the freshly baked bagels. With a cup of coffee in hand, we began our quick Hamptons adventure.

Walk through Downtown Westhampton

In the early morning, we strolled down the heart of Westhampton on Main Street. We window shopped at the local boutiques—many were closed for the season. Always a favorite activity, we couldn’t resist glancing at some of the local real estate. Although many (all) of the homes are out of our price range, I will always appreciate stunning homes and coastal architecture.

Scenic Drive down Dune Road

Eager for scenic views, we started a leisurely drive down Dune Road. With the bare trees, we got full views of the stunning oceanfront property. It naturally begs the question, “Seriously, what do these people do for a living?” Despite the off-season calm, The Hamptons’ signature blend of nature and luxury unfolded right before us.

Winter Beach Day at Ponquogue

Ponquogue Beach, usually buzzing with summer energy, welcomed us with a serene winter embrace. Bundled up against the coastal breeze, we took a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, iced coffee in hand. The sound of waves crashing on the cold sand and the crisp sea air provided a refreshing escape. Our winter beach day reminded us how beautiful this slice of Long Island is all year long.

Lunch at Skippy’s

For lunch, we went to Shippy’s, a beloved Southampton eatery. Established in 1954, consider it an elevated pub with signature sandwiches and decor. It began as a German-American restaurant and a local favorite of Joe DiMaggio and Frank Sinatra. Looking incredible for being a 70-year-old institution, Shippy’s unveiled a makeover in 2022 that helped bring a fresh face to an old favorite. I have a few spots in Connecticut where I would love to receive a similar treatment. Interior design makes everything taste better.

Sweet Treats To-Go from Tate’s

No Hamptons getaway is complete without a visit to Tate’s Bake Shop. With bags of sweet treats in tow, we embraced this quintessential Hamptons experience. Of course, their signature crisp cookies are incredible, but we decided to sample the things not found at our local grocery. Coffee cake, shortbread cookies, biscotti, oh my!

I grabbed a final vanilla latte, and then it was time to return to our friend’s home to relax. We had a fun double date night, which I’ll share later. It was less than 48 hours in the Hampton, but it was still exactly what I needed to recharge. Moral of the story… One, find friends with a Hamptons house. Two, always say yes to a spontaneous friend’s trip.

Love from the Hamptons,
Katie
