Shuffleboard: The St. Pete Pastime

Shuffleboard: The St. Pete Pastime

St. Pete’s is certainly full of its sports fans, I’m one of them, but there is one in particular that has definitely made it’s mark on our city’s history. Don’t laugh, but shuffleboard is the game to play. Normally associated with retirement homes and cruise ships, it’s come back with a breath of fresh air. Since so many of us are looking for a new excuse to get outside, let me introduce to the pastime that put my town on the map.

What’s the History?

Sometimes called 52 feet of history, the game started at least 500 years ago. Honestly, the exact origins are still a mystery. We know that King Henry VII liked to play, but that doesn’t mean England can claim it. It’s such a simple premise, I can almost envision this game being played during the time of Cleopatra or Julius Caesar. Now a days, it’s become extremely popular in retirement homes and even makes some appearances at bars in the miniature version.

What are the Rules?

Like I said, this game is pretty simple. You and your partner stand on opposite ends of the court, with another team. At each end, there is a segmented triangle with each section representing different points. From top to bottoms: 10, 8, 7, and negative 10 (called the kitchen). You and the opposite team use a cue stick (called tang) and four discs each (called biscuits) to either score points or play defensive. If the biscuit touches the line, sorry no points! After eight rounds, the team with the most points wins. Depending on the venue or club, there are some different quirks or interpretations on the rules. So, if you’re playing for the first time, it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Why Saint Pete?

That’s a fair question. Shuffleboard came to the Sunshine City nearly a century ago, in 1923, as a leisurely activity during the Florida population boom. If you’re a history enthusiast, I highly recommend reading Bubble in the Sun, one of my favorite summer reads. Anyway, as the popularity of the sport grew, a need for a formal court presented itself. It made its home at Mirror Lake and the world’ largest shuffleboard club was born. In 1979, the International Shuffleboard Association was founded here to help the sport become more popular in the USA. Funny enough, shuffleboarders come from around the world to play here.

How do I join?

As far as I can tell, there isn’t a shuffleboard club database, but a simple Google search should go along way. In St. Pete, you can join the league and play in weekly tournaments or just the fun of it. David and I are a part of a league and I don’t want to brag, but I’m pretty good. We even have our own set of tangs. Maybe someday, I can go pro! While we lived in NYC, we joined the league at Royal Palms in Brooklyn (also in Chicago). It took us an hour to get there by subway, but it was such a fun release and felt like a little slice of Florida in the Big Apple. The aesthetic was definitely vintage St. Pete inspired!

Shuffleboard… It’s not for retirees anymore. I used to get strange looks when I told people I was in a league, but it’s a great stress reliever. It’s extremely casual, relaxed, but most of all fun! Be part of this St. Pete tradition and join the club today!

My Favorite St. Pete Murals

My Favorite St. Pete Murals

Favorite, St. Pete, murals, artists, sunshine
You Are My Sunshine by J&S Signs

Blouse || Jeans || Heels || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet

In recent years St. Pete’s reputation as a haven for retirees has shifted to a youthful vibe with a budding art scene. The different age demographics live in harmony and can be found frequenting the same local haunts. One of the things I love most about living in the Sunshine City is how the arts and creativity have been embraced. That is especially true with street art. St. Pete’s identity has become synonymous with the nearly 100 murals that grace the different neighborhoods in our city. In fact, each year we celebrate the Shine Mural Festival where artists from around the world add their own signature to previously unused wall space. Since spotting murals is becoming one of the city’s biggest attractions, and it’s a great activity to do with social distancing, I thought I would round up my favorites. The brighter the better!

Sunshine On My Mind by Leo Gomez
Sunshine On My Mind: Warehouse Arts District

This little picture does not give the size of this mural justice! Not to mention the colors are so vibrant. Artist, Leo Gomez, is homegrown to St. Pete and specializes in typography. You’ll see his work all over town, especially at local coffee shops. Expect his pieces to be clean, but also vintage inspired.

Shine 2019 Mural by George Rose
Floral Handball Court, Campbell Park

This fun and extremely colorful mural is an unexpected sight in St. Pete’s Campbell Park. The Aussie artist, George Rose, graced her presence at this handball court near the Rec Center. I simply love the colors, but I imagine this would get extremely distracting if I were to play an actual game here.

J&S Signs
J&S Signs, Historic Uptown

I’d like to file this one under ‘how Katie sees the world’. So cheerful, this mural also happens to be located at my favorite yoga studio in town, SunState Yoga. It’s brought to you by a locally raised team, J&S Signs, who now call Oregon home. They are behind some of my favorite signage in the city, like the ‘You Are My Sunshine’ mural I introduced above.

  • Starry Eyed by Chad Mize
  • Mr. Sun by Chad Mize
Starry Eyed, Central Arts District

Iconic model from the sixties, Twiggy, makes a brief appearance in St. Pete with this hidden mural. The colors are subtle and feminine, but magically seem to change depending on the lighting. Chad Mize added this gem to the scene in 2013 and since it seems to be on of the most standout pieces in the area.

MR. SUN, Central Arts District

Another work from Chad Mize, it only makes sense to be right next to Twiggy, showing off the artist’s range. Mr. Sun was a symbol to advertise St. Pete in the 1940’s, but it somehow is still current today. The bright colors are meant to represent the new life that has been brought to the city in recent years.

Swarm of Fish by Pantónio
Swarm of Fish, Grand Central District

With this mural, I can’t decide what I love more. The cool colors and movement both could leave starring. Portuguese street artist, Pantónio, specializes in fluid birds and fish that seem to be jumping right off the wall. It’s a great welcome as you enter the budding Grand Central District.

Around town and beyond, I’ve used so many murals as back drops and inspiration. They are so photo worthy, but I don’t think any picture truly does them justice! The biggest take away is to make sure to credit each and every artist behind the murals that you love. Seeing what gets added next is only half the fun!

Katie

Lunch at Baba on Central

May 19, 2020

Lunch at Baba on Central

Dress || Sandals ($100 off with code BAKATIE50) || Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet

As a disclaimer, I originally intended to write this blog post about a favorite St. Pete restaurant back in March. For obvious reasons, i.e. the country beginning to shutdown, it just didn’t seem like the right time to hit PUBLISH. Now, the Sunshine State is beginning to open up and, whether you agree with it or not, our local businesses and restaurants need our patronage. I have to admit, it feels so good to dine out with David. More importantly, I’m so proud of how St. Pete has stepped up to incorporate social distancing into our new normal. If you’re looking for a new-to-you place to eat at, let me introduce you to Baba.

  • Greek, Restaurant, St. Pete, Florida
The Back Story

Baba is a Mediterranean restaurant brought to you by the team behind Bodega, another local favorite. There is a lot of love put into this most recent endeavor. The owners, Debbie and George Sayegh, can both trace their roots back to the Mediterranean. The cuisine is inspired by Greek and Lebanese cuisine with an American twist.

The Aesthetic

While the food is amazing, I would come here for the decor alone. It’s light and bright, with beautiful blue accents. AKA, it’s just my personal style! While I took these pictures for the blog post, I’ve also filed them under ‘Future Home Inspiration.’ That’s especially true for the tiling at the bar. While I’ve never been to Greece, it’s top on my bucket list, I’d like to think this serves as temporary substitute for the real deal.

  • Greek, Restaurant, St. Pete, Florida
The Restaurant

The restaurant portion to Baba is where I’ve spent the bulk of my time. I remember when this space was a defunct gas station, but the transformation has been amazing! It’s very open air with food options that are light, but surprisingly filling. My number one pick would have to be their falafel. Available in both a pita and platter form, it’s my favorite thing on the menu! The platter comes with an apple and fennel salad that I wish I could recreate at home.

  • Greek, Restaurant, St. Pete, Florida
The Bakery

If you need something a little bit more on-the-go, Baba’s bakery is the option for you. The menu is slightly different than their restaurant, specializing in pitas, mezze, and baked goods. It’s also the best place in town to treat yourself with Greek coffee. With summer fast approaching, my drink of choice is the Frappe. The foamy drink is impossible airy, but still gives me the much needed caffeine pick-me-up. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a healthy portion of baklava. No Greek meal is complete without this decadent dessert.

Greek, Restaurant, St. Pete, Florida

With Florida, and the country as a whole, starting to open up and return to normalcy, it’s a great opportunity to try new restaurants. You never know, you may just end up finding a new favorite!

Katie
