LL Bean, New Hampshire, Portsmouth, Sweater, Fall

Sweater || Jeans || Loafers || Tote Bag || Earrings

For a crisp fall day exploring the charming streets of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, I kept things cozy and chic with a mix of neutrals and timeless staples. My sweater from LL Bean is the ultimate comfort piece—warm without being too bulky, with a classic knit texture that pairs perfectly with just about anything. I opted for a pair of white jeans, which are my go-to for creating a clean and bright look, even in cooler weather.

One of the highlights of this outfit is my brand-new tassel loafers from J.Crew. These loafers have quickly become a wardrobe favorite, adding a sophisticated touch while being comfortable enough for all-day wear. The tassels give them a playful, preppy vibe, and I love how they complement the relaxed fit of the jeans and sweater.

My husband, David, and I had a quick but wonderful trip to Portsmouth. It was so much fun to see the town through his eyes, as he lived here years ago. We grabbed coffee and breakfast at the cozy Elephantine Bakery, a local spot I highly recommend for anyone visiting. We also stayed at the Hotel Thaxter, which had an amazing blend of historic charm and modern comfort.

This outfit made exploring the historic, coastal town feel effortless yet put together. Whether you’re strolling through colonial Portsmouth or grabbing a quick cup of coffee, it’s a look that strikes the perfect balance between style and practicality. Fall fashion at its best!

Love from New Hampshire,
Katie

Essex, Connecticut, Summer, New England, Griswold Inn, Coastal

Dress || Sandals || Handbag || Earrings

To no one’s surprise, including my own, I have fallen in love with a little slice of New England where the land meets the sea. Well, it actually meets the Connecticut River, but this is a coastal town nonetheless. With a population of less than 7,000, Essex is about as small as it comes. Despite its size, it is steeped in rich history with so much to explore. On a sunny weekend morning, we decided to make the short drive (1 hour from Norwalk and 2 hours 30 minutes from NYC) to experience the town for ourselves. Although it was a quick visit, here’s what we discovered while exploring Essex, Connecticut.

Iced Coffee on the Water

Like so many weekend mornings, ours began with visiting the local coffee shop. Here, in Essex, that would be Essex Coffee & Tea Company. It’s a tiny space, but that’s what you can expect from a house built in 1720. On this particular visit, I opted for an iced seasonal latte (I believe salted caramel) and a cinnamon crumb cake to go. Next, stroll down Main Street. You won’t have to go far until you reach the water. We loved grabbing a bench and sitting by the water for a spell. While there, be sure to visit the Connecticut River Museum for their permanent exhibits on the town’s history.

Eye Candy with Historic Homes

After your caffeinated treat by the river, walk back into town for some mid-morning shopping. Take your time, though! You’ll want to linger on each historic home. Essex was originally part of the Old Saybrook Colony, which became a part of Connecticut in the 1640s. You can find rows of homes from the 1700s and 1800s. During the War of 1812, things got really interesting. Then, it became the target of a raid by British soldiers. Even though the town was quickly hijacked, the townspeople were able to spare their homes by promising not to deploy the local militia. The British then marched to the Griswold Inn, then called Bushnell Tavern, and proceeded to drink $100,000 worth of rum.

Lunch at the Griswold Inn

After you walk through town, you simply cannot leave without a meal at the Griswold Inn. Although originally under a different name, it has been open for business since 1776, making it one of the country’s oldest continuously operating inns. That would also make it the oldest bar in all of Connecticut which is how it found its way on my radar. The decor inside is perfectly nautical, with ship portraits, an extensive collection of Revolutionary firearms, and prints from Currier & Ives. A place like this is the perfect spot for Fish and Chips, which is exactly what I ordered, while sampling the Griswold Inn’s own Revolutionary Ale.

As you can see, I took so many pictures during our short visit, but I’m only scratching the surface. For my friends who are familiar with the Gasparilla Inn, Essex reminded me of a New England version of Boca Grande, Florida. That feeling alone instantly made me a lifelong fan, and I can’t wait to come back for a repeat visit to this slice of coastal Connecticut.

Baby Must Haves in the City

Baby, Upper East Side, New York, in the city

Tank || Denim Skirt (Similar) || Ballet Flats || Handbag || Sunglasses || Earrings

Let’s talk about having babies in the city, specifically New York City! Are there women who are better equipped to talk about the subject? Yes! My hat goes out to the parents who boldly raise their children in the city that never sleeps. While these families may have a different perspective, I’m speaking as a new mom who volunteers to schlep from Connecticut as often as possible. If I can’t get back to living in my dream apartment on the Upper East Side, at least for the time being, I’m more than willing to make the journey. Exposing Brennan to as many experiences as I can is a top priority for me. In fact, we’ve made the commute twice in the past two weeks, and I’m getting a sense of what went well. For my fellow suburbanites, here’s a list of my baby must haves in the city.

Baby, Upper East Side, New York, in the city

Oversized Tote Bag

While countless diaper bag styles are on the market, I love the simplicity of a solid LL Bean Tote Bag. It fits everything you can imagine for a full day, and even an overnight stay, in the city. The rugged canvas material is enough to survive anything Manhattan throws at you.

UppaBaby Vista Stroller

There are pros and cons to nearly every stroller, but we have a lot of love for our UppaBaby Vista Stroller. For our excursion into Manhattan, we opted for the bassinet over the car seat to ensure that Brennan was sleep-safe all day long. If you find yourself traveling with your little one, the bassinet is a safe alternative for a crib in case the hotel isn’t able to accommodate.

BabyBjörn Carrier

As soon as Brennan was big enough, the BabyBjörn became my new best friend. If she had it her way, she would cuddle on my chest all day, but that doesn’t exactly help me be productive. Now, she’s happy to “let” me get things done around the apartment. While in the city, David wore Brennan while visiting the MET. While she probably won’t remember the day, I’ll always cherish seeing her in my favorite place for the first time.

Insulated Water Bottle

When you’re on the go with a baby, it can be stressful to instantly find water for making formula. Instead of carrying a giant jug or buying it on the fly, we’ve opted to pack a small prefilled water bottle with distilled water for le bĂ©bĂ©. I love this sleek S’Well Bottle because it’s compact and holds 17 ounces. AKA enough to make 4 bottles.

Baby Bottles

Having two baby bottles, like our NanoBébé Bottles, on hand helps keep cleaning to a minimum. If you prefill them before you head to the city, you can almost instantly have a bottle of formula ready. Why this particular style? Well, after some trial and error, we found that Brennan seemed to prefer them. Bring whatever works best for you and your little one.

Formula Dispenser

If you’ve ever had a little one, you know what a precious resource formula is! Having enough on hand can be the sole difference between a great and catastrophic day. We found this Formula Dispenser on Amazon. It has given us so much peace of mind. Just fill it up once, and you’ll have more than enough formula ready for a day or two. I’ve found in early parenthood, it’s the little things that make my life so much easier!

Portable Fan

Summer is officially here! As we venture out with our little one, we’re so mindful of her overheating. After all, her tiny body isn’t quite ready to control her body temp. This Portable Fan has been the answer. It hooks right up to Brennan’s stroller and can be positioned any which way. I know it will be the purchase we’re going to use for years to come!

Sound Soother

Like the portable fan, the Sound Soother is one of our most used baby items. It helps take the edge off for Brennan at home, while in the car, and especially when we’re out and about. I’m so happy we have it on hand to keep our little one content, even when big feelings want to get the best of her.

Travel Changing Pad

The never-ending question. Where can we change Brennan? I’ve become hyper aware of the places that do and do not have changing tables in their bathrooms. I’m looking at you, Central Park… Our little one doesn’t care if it’s inconvenient. When she wants a new diaper, she gets a new diaper! This Travel Changing Pad gives us a soft and clean service to do our business. It folds up to the size of a notebook and has extra pockets for diapers and wipes.

Baby, Upper East Side, New York, in the city

Even the best laid plans can go wrong when traveling with an infant. Just remember you’re doing the best you can. Keep up a good sense of humor, and lean on your partner. Whether you’re relaxing at home or on the go in the city, you’ve got this!

Love from NYC,
Katie
