My Myers-Briggs Personality Type

Getting a little personal here on Orange to Apple by talking about personality tests, specifically the Myers Briggs Test from 16 Personalities and sharing my personality type. This, obviously isn’t a new topic, but was quite a conversation starter at work last week. So, I decided to give it a whirl for myself. I vaguely remember taking this a while ago, but my results are in. I learned that I’m a Campaigner, also known as a Champion.
Initially, just by the name alone, I didn’t think that sounded like me at all. I envisioned a politician traveling around a working on that kind of campaign. Once I broke it down, I realized that the results were pretty much spot on! Let’s get personal and talk about my strengths versus weaknesses.
Strengths:
- Curious. In any given day, I ask an insane amount of questions. Usually describing my self as being nosey, the word ‘curious’ is probably a better way of describing myself. I like to ask personal questions, without judgement, to try and get to know whoever I meet. David has credited this as being part of my teacher brain and interacting with my young students.
- Observant. On the subway, when most people are buried in their phones or books, I am constantly scanning the crowd and trying to pick up on the little details. It’s not a safety thing, I just get really curious about the people I’m commuting with. Have I made awkward eye contact? Yes, and daily!
- Energetic and Enthusiastic. I joke that it is exhausting to be me. I always try to keep a positive attitude and always want to seem like my best self. This, combined with always wanting to engage in conversation, sometimes leaves me a little tired at the end of the day, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
- Excellent Communicator. I really enjoy talking with people about all kinds of topics. If I hear an interesting conversation going on next to me, it takes everything to not jump in. As far as one-on-one convos go, I tend to be very honest with what I’m thinking about or how I’m feeling.
- Knows Hows to Relax. Sometimes it’s so rewarding to just to kick back and do a whole lot of nothing. Monday through Friday is so jam-packed with work and social hours. When the weekend comes, there’s nothing better than sitting at the park with my morning coffee to people watch. Because of that attitude, it’s hard for me to actually pick an activity to do, even in New York.
- Very Popular and Friendly. I laughed out loud when I read this one from 16 Personalities. It sounds so conceited to call myself popular, but I would agree that I’m very friendly. Over the years, I’ve picked up a very diverse group of friends and even when I’m walking down the street I think to myself, ‘that person looks pretty cool to talk to.’ Be warned, if you happen to sit next to me at at a bar, I will probably start a conversation with you.
Weaknesses:
- Poor Practical Skills. David would agree with this, 100%. I’m always thinking about new ideas and projects that would be exciting to work on. Some of them, get a little farfetched. It’s a good thing I have David (whose personality type is an Architect) to keep me grounded and make me think about the practicality of things. He’s really does balance me out.
- Find it Difficult to Focus. Because new things are always popping in my head, it’s hard for my to sit down and really focus on one element. This could not be truer than with how I clean the apartment. Basically, it’s a whirlwind of me running from room to room, tidying up the random spot until everything is done.
- Overthink Things. For as positive as I am, there isn’t a day that goes by when I overthink something. Without warning, an event from years ago will come to mind and I’ll think about what I should have done differently. This leads to me having trouble getting to sleep at night because I can’t turn off my brain. I replay my entire day and sometimes mentally draft things that I need to write for this blog.
- Get Stressed Easily. This is so true, but I would never show it. By nature, I’m a people-pleaser and an over thinker. Especially in times of uncertainty or high-pressure situations, stress puts a lot of tension on my upper back. Recently, I’ve been really trying to make a conscious effort to let things go and get out of my own head.
- Highly Emotional. I can feel this happening more and more as I get older. I think it comes from a really strong sense of empathy and channeling other people’s emotions. Not much of a crier myself, I need to keep the news off because I feel other people’s sadness in a very big way. With this, I know I think more with my heart instead of my head.
- Independent to a Fault. Freedom can be the greatest reward of all. I march to my own beat and like to be the master of my fate. Because of that, it’s so frustrating when things are simply out of my control and I have to let go of the wheel. At the surface, this may not sound like a trait for a teacher, but I had a lot of control in what happens in my own classroom.
Okay, where are my other Campaigners at? Like I said, this became a really interesting discussion at work last week. Knowing your personality type can help you answer the question, ‘why am I doing this?’ More importantly, it reminds you to think about others and helps you view things from their perspective.
