What I’m Packing For Paris

What I’m Packing For Paris

My bags are packed and I’m ready to head across the pond for a girl’s trip to France. This will be my first trip to the country and I’m so excited to explore both Paris and Bordeaux. I’ve been reading so much about the record breaking heat wave that has hit Europe the past few weeks, but luckily it looks like it will start to cool off just before we get there. Still, I’m preparing for steamy days in the city, not really unlike summer in New York.

The biggest challenge is packing everything up in just a carry on. I’m a notorious over packer and I’m trying to really keep what I bring to a minimum. Harder still, I want to have plenty of room in my suitcase for bringing back all of the fun souvenirs. In Paris, our hotel is dangerously close to some of the best shopping in the world and I need to budget accordingly.

When I travel, I try and dress as close to a local as possible. Obviously, that’s extremely difficult when I’ve never been to a destination and a lot of research is required. I’ve found, especially in the summertime, switching your denim pieces for linen is a great alternative. Since I bought them about a month ago, I feel like I’ve been living in these navy linen pants from LOFT. You can style them just like your favorite pair of blue jeans, but they help you stay a lot cooler. There’s no shortage of linen pieces in all of our favorite stores, but I really feel it makes a huge difference in comfort. Linen does tend to wrinkle easier, but I swear by traveling with this Downy Wrinkle Release Spray. It was a complete game changer when David and I traveled to Italy last year.

When the day calls for miles of walking and sightseeing, I’m also very partial for wearing midi dresses and skirts. I have two theories as to why this is your best bet. First off, you will look effortlessly stylish and probably not get pegged as a tourist right away. Second, wearing dresses and skirts are a great option for staying cooler, but you should consider the midi length, especially if you’re want to visit religious sites. Many places in Europe have a surprisingly strict dress code and I’ve seen many people turned away at the door because of what they were wearing.

I’ve already featured this item on the blog, but this sundress from H&M checks off so many boxes. It’s midi length, linen material, and has a gorgeous blue toile print that I just love. It’s absolutely getting packed for my trip. This floral printed skirt from H&M may also make an appearance. I can already see myself strolling down the River Siene feeling as Parisian as can be.

Finally, I can’t forget comfortable footwear. I swear by my Tretorn sneakers and they have already traveled the world with me. They feel like you’re walking on a cloud and will definitely keep up with me as I walk the streets of Paris. For dinners out, I can’t wait for my Castaner espadrille wedges to make their French debut. Even though they give me a little bit of height, they are still extremely comfortable. All I have to do is double knot the straps and I will be good to go.

My flight doesn’t leave until late tonight, but I am already daydreaming of arriving in Paris tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be sharing prescheduled blog posts for the rest of the week, but can’t wait to share my adventures as soon as I’m back stateside. See you then!

Love from NYC,
Katie

Channeling Jackie Kennedy: Vol. 1

July 5, 2019

Channeling Jackie Kennedy

NYC, Style Blog, Summer, Jackie Kennedy, Tory Burch, Yellow, Rent the Runway, Jack Rogers, Tuckernuck

Dress (also) || Sandals || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet || Lip Color

I’m rounding out the Fourth of July week by channeling an American icon. One of our country’s most beloved First Ladies, Jackie Kennedy will always be my ultimate style inspiration. Her effortless class and grace is something that has stood the test of time. In so many of my own looks that I share, I’d like to think there’s even the slightest touch of Jackie. To honor the woman who has inspired me for so many years, I am so happy to introduce a new series for the blog. Periodically, I will attempt to recreate some of Jackie’s most iconic styles through Channeling Jackie. Alright, let’s get started!

When I think of Jackie’s style, one of the first looks that pops into my head is the perfect summer time look. Jackie is lounging al fresco, sunhat in hand, wearing a golden tan and yellow plaid sundress (see picture below). Her hair is perfectly coifed and her lips have a bright pop of pink. Like I said, it’s the epitome of summer!

Normally, finding such a specific dress to recreate this style would be a huge undertaking and almost impossible. Lucky for me, Tory Burch has never let me down! This plaid shift dress is almost a perfect match to Jackie’s. It’s a classic silhouette, inspired by the 60s, that has been brought into 2019 by being tucked in all of the right places. If you want to just feel like Jackie for a day, you can also opt to borrow this exact number from Rent the Runway.

You really can’t have a conversation about dressing like Jackie without mentioning some of her favorite sandals! Jackie single handedly launched Jack Rogers into permanent preppy fame in the 1960s. They were just as much a part of her summer uniform as her oversized sunglasses and headscarves. Whenever I slide on my white sandals, I always think of Jackie marching down Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

To round out this recreated look, I needed to pick out a lip color that would make a statement. Jackie’s was almost a bubble gum pink, but I opted for this bright coral color from Chanel. It’s a little change that helped make this outfit all my own. Finally, grab your favorite rattan clutch, like my go-to from Cult Gaia, and you will be ready to take on the Upper East Side, Palm Beach, or Martha’s Vineyard just like Jackie.

Katie

Summer Strawberry Picking

Summer Strawberry Picking

NYC, Style Blog, Strawberry, Rent the Runway, Summer, Preppy, Espadrilles, J. Crew

Button Down (also) || Jeans || Wedges || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet

Growing up, I have a distinct memory of planting strawberries in a backyard garden almost every summer. Treating it like a little project, my strawberry garden would be my sole focus for the season. Soon after daily watering, weeding, I would begin to see the little berries start to form. By the end of the summer, I hopefully would have enough berries to make strawberry shortcake for my family. It was the fruits of my labor (pun intended).

Because of those experiences, I will always associate strawberries with summer and the moment the grocery stores start selling them by the carton is just the beginning. Fun fact: Florida is the number two strawberry producer in the country and it’s just as part of our culture as citrus. I may not have my own strawberry garden anymore, but they are still everywhere for the season. From my favorite summer cocktails to home decor, it’s hard to escape the berry!

This strawberry printed button down by Rails was a recent borrow from Rent the Runway. The material is one of the softest I ever felt, which gave it less structure and a laid back vibe. I actually had the chance of wearing it twice over the course of a week. It felt just as effortless to tuck the billowy material into my white J. Crew jeans as it did knotted for a warm summer evening. Upon investigating, I found the top is available on the Rails website and at Nordstrom in a short-sleeve version.

Can I talk about my new shoes for a second? They were a birthday gift from my parents! After hearing some of my favorite bloggers, like Caroline from LCB Style and Julia from Gal Meets Glam, rave about them, I just knew I had to have a pair of my own. These espadrille wedges from Castaner live up to all of the height and then some. I think they are a great price point for a shoe I will live in and they come in a rainbow of colors. I’m making room in my closet for more.

Before I leave you until after the holiday, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite strawberry inspired pieces. I can’t exactly brag about my wedges without mentioning this strawberry embroidered pair of espadrilles, also from Castaner. The neutral base and pop of color would make them pair perfectly with a crisp white shirt-dress. Whether you like studs or dangle earrings, these earrings from Bauble Bar and Anthropologie are both guaranteed to make a statement. If this is a motif that really speaks to you, and you want to splurge, the Gucci catalog is ripe with great strawberry picks. My personal favorites are these sneakers, a silk scarf, and fun clutch. With so many great pieces, at some many price points, it’s hard to pick just one!

Love from NYC,
Katie
