Packing Guide: Las Vegas

Packing Guide: Las Vegas

Last weekend, I got to enjoy an amazing, whirlwind girls trip to Las Vegas. Why were we in Vegas? Well, long story short, it’s because of bowling! More on that later… Anyways, it’s a destination that I wouldn’t normally gravitate towards, but I always have an amazing time with one of my dearest friends and her family. Although it was a rough start (try $125+ cab ride and a flight delayed by 4 hours), it turned into an extremely relaxing stay with amazing food, spa day, and lots of pool time. Our time at the Four Seasons was, in a word, INCREDIBLE and just what the doctor ordered.

I will never be one to dress over-the-top or show too much skin, so packing for Las Vegas definitely can have its sets of challenges. I wanted to stay true to my sense of style, but still feel a little extra dolled up. For our nicer dinners out, I opted for this navy jumpsuit from Nordstrom and navy slip midi-dress from Madewell. While the jumpsuit is an absolute steal at $59, I think it was the slip dress that stole the show!

I’ve been admiring this style dress for quite some time and thought that Las Vegas was the perfect place to test it out. It hits my curves in all of the right places and is as comfortable as a pair of pajamas. I almost want to compare this dress to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants because it also looked incredible on my friend, who is much slimmer than I. For both of my navy ensembles, I paired these gingham heels from J. Crew Factory and tortoise clutch from Tuckernuck. In case I got chilled while at the casino, I had my nautical scarf from Tuckernuck on hand as an extra layer.

And yes, you read that correctly… We were in Las Vegas for some bowling! My friend’s family owns bowling centers in St. Pete and Vegas happens to be the host city each year for the Hall of Fame fundraiser. I got to show off my lack of skills on the lanes and happened to win a bowling ball in the process. While we bowled, my friend and I were uniformed in matching J. Crew Factory tees. On day one, we wore this cerulean blue ‘Summer Fridays’ tee. For day two, we broadcasted our favorite summertime drinks with this orchid ‘Prosecco’ tee. J. Crew Factory tees are some of the comfiest you can find, and these made for great conversation starters.

If you’re going to Las Vegas, it’s important to bring your best swim suits. Days by the pool are seriously a big deal and having a few options is always a good hand. I’m not joking, I think I threw in maybe six swimsuits for our four day trip and I only ended up wearing two of them. While I saw enough string bikinis to last a life time, I still felt extremely chic in my royal blue one piece from J. Crew. I love that one-piece suits have come back into the mix, they are so slimming and come in just as many styles as two-pieces. To get from the pool to our room, I love this navy eyelet cover-up, also from J. Crew. It’s extremely versatile and also can be worn as a dress, if you’re in a pinch.

There are still two (small) things that I think absolutely must be packed for a trip to Vegas. The first is face moisturizer. The dessert sun and heat can wreck your skin in no time at all. I am so happy to have brought my Summer Fridays Jet Lag cream. I’ve said before it saved my skin during the NYC winter months and it was just as true in Las Vegas.

The second is to bring a watch! Casinos are notorious for being dark, windowless, and clock free. It’s way too easy to lose all sense of time. By having a discreet watch, like mine from Tory Burch, you won’t have to worry about that problem. Can you simply just look at your phone? Probably, but sometimes it’s nice to stay screen free.

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be much of a partier or gambler, like me, Las Vegas can still be an ideal destination. It may be called Sin City, but it’s also a great place to relax and eat some of the best food in the country. To see everything I packed for my quick trip to Vegas, be sure to shop my packing guide below.

Orange is the New Seersucker

Orange is the New Seersucker

NYC, Style Blogger, Brooks Brother, Red Fleece, Seersucker, Preppy, Spring Style

Dress || Heels || Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet

When I was a kid, orange was my absolute favorite color! I wanted everything from my backpack to my sneakers to be this happy hue. Now-a-days, sometimes I genuinely ask myself, “why don’t I wear orange more often?” It’s such a bright, sunshine of a color that perfectly embodies summer weather. Sadly, it’s hard for me to find a shade that works with my skin tone and the number of orange pieces are limited.

This orange seersucker dress from the Brook’s Brothers Red Fleece collection was love at first sight. Not only is it in the perfect shade of orange, but it also combines classic seersucker, one of my favorite summer fabrics! It’s light, breezy and has the number one most cherished detail on a dress, pockets.

A while ago, here, I shared this yellow tweed shift dress, also from the Red Fleece collection. Apart from that, I honestly can’t remember the last time I shopped at Brooks Brothers. This collection changes that mindset. By taking timeless silhouettes and giving them fun, updated fabrics and prints, you have a clothing line that is perfect for young professionals, who still appreciate classic style.

Although I’m not going to call them bargain pieces, Red Fleece has a great price point if you’re on the lookout for a special occasion dress. Whether it be for an interview, wedding, or shower, there are so many amazing pieces to choose from. I’ve been coveting this orange floral maxi dress for my upcoming trip to France. It would also be just perfect for a summer date night.

I always love finding, new-to-me, brands and collections. I can’t help but wonder how long I’ve been missing out! To make up for lost time, I know that the Red Fleece collection is going to making its way into my closet for the entire foreseeable future.

Camp for the Every Girl

Camp for the Every Girl

Since moving to New York, I’ve found a whole new appreciation for going to museums, art museums in particular. We didn’t have very many in St. Pete, but my wedding reception was at the Museum of Fine Arts, so I guess that love has always been there. This year, David and I decided to become members at the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) and we are definitely getting our money’s worth. Since it’s only a block away, I love being able to pop in after work or pretty much any time I want. There’s so much ground to cover, I always end up seeing something brand new.

The latest art exhibit at the Met, that has really caused quite a stir is Camp: Notes on Fashion. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about it from the annual Met Gala. Let me tell you, this exhibit was absolutely amazing! It’s equal parts surreal and mesmerizing, but left me with so much inspiration. Better still, it was incredibly informative. I walked away with a better understanding of what camp is and what camp is not.

The exhibit is based on the 1964 essay by Susan Sontag. In it, she outlines 58 key points on the matter. Ultimately, for something to be camp, it should fun and “anti-serious.” As Sontag said, “Camp is walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.”

I highly suggest coming to New York sometime before September 8th, so you can see the exhibit for yourself. If you can’t, I’ve shared some of my favorite highlights on my Instagram page.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “What does this mean for me? Can I add a little bit of Camp to my life?” I’m neither a fashion nor art expert, but I want to say that the answer is yes!

My favorite example of Camp, and I think of the easiest to add, is the fruit motif. Think Carmen Miranda. You’ll even see one of her fruity headpieces at the exhibit. They also sell some fruity jewelry from Bauble Bar right in their gift shop like this pair of watermelon drop earrings or orange slice stud earrings. And how perfect is this chunky charm bracelet? I decided to give it a try for myself with this watermelon midi-skirt from Anthropologie. Camp is about taking the not serious too seriously (and vice versa) I added a professional white blazer from J. Crew to give a whimsical skirt a grown-up touch.

Since Camp is all about extravagance and being over the top, feathers and rhinestones are always welcome. In fact, the more the merrier! It’s an element that is seen all throughout the exhibit. You can opt to add feathers in a subtle way, like these striking earrings from Tory Burch or handbag from Loeffler Randall. Adding an element of practicality, this feather trimmed sweatshirt is a splurge, but such a conversation starter!

Judy Garland is Camp. In fact, she is mentioned several times, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow can be heard throughout the exhibit. Camp has often been synonymous with gay culture and the rainbow symbol is at the heart of it. Especially since it’s pride month, rock the rainbow to show your support. This ‘equality’ tee is a simple way to make quite a statement. If you are wanting something a little less obvious, I absolutely ADORE this maxi dress from Alice + Olivia. Trust me, it is even prettier in person! For an equally bold sundress, without the steep price tag, either this dress or this dress would make for a great option.

NYC, Style Blogger, J. Crew, Anthropologie, Camp, The MET, Preppy, Summer

I think the best thing about Camp is that it is entirely open to interpretation. In all honesty, there isn’t really a right way or wrong way to express yourself. If they say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, then the same can probably be said about Camp. Make your own interpretation by visiting this exhibit at The Met in person by September 8th, if you can. If you’ve already visited, let me know your thoughts!

Katie
