Packing Guide: NOLA

Earlier in the week, I shared my perfect packing guide for attending New Orlean’s annual Jazz Fest, seen here. It only makes sense that I include what to pack for the rest of your stay in the city too. NOLA is a historic city that is dripping with charm, but because of its Southern humidity and ancient streets, it’s important to remember to pack with a purpose. Especially in the French Quarter, where infamous Bourbon Street calls so many party-goers each and every year, bringing your nicest designer duds isn’t going to be your best idea either.

The first thing you should pack are your shoes. Honestly, you’re going to want to bring shoes that you can opt to toss at the end of your trip. Walking on the dusty streets of the Quarter will wreck your shoes alone, and don’t even think about what you’re stepping in! Play it safe with a simple pair of flat sandals, like these from Sam Edelman, or a worn-in pair of sneakers, like neutral colored Vans. If you want a dressier shoe for a night out, do yourself a favor and make them wedges. Nothing would be harder than trying to trot around in a pair of sky high stilettos. These raffia wedges from Sam Edelman did just the trick for me on my visit! They give you some height, but are still flat and surprisingly easy to walk in.

Okay, now that you have your footwear, I think it’s safe to start putting together some outfits. A true New Orleans Packing Guide all depends on when you’re heading out on your trip. Like so many Southern cities, the weather can vary wildly between summer and winter. Most of my trips to the Crescent City have been during the spring and summer, but I’ve also had two rainy, cold visits during New Years and Mardi Gras. This post, obviously, is for travelers in the warmer months.

During the summer, light materials like eyelet, linen, or chambray are your friend! They will keep you as cool as you can, but won’t look too wilted during the heat of the day. Dresses help even more by creating a little draft effect, if you know what I mean. In all seriousness though, sometimes this city gets so hot, you can see the steam rising right off the street, especially after the frequent afternoon showers. This eyelet little number, from J. Crew, or chambray pick, from the Gal Meets Glam Collection, would both make for good options.

Keep your accessories functional and discreet. New Orleans, like any major city, isn’t a place where you want to be seen as a target. For your trip, leave the clutch at home and grab a tote bag or crossbody. I bought this straw crossbody from H&M specifically for my trip and it worked like a charm to keep all of my necessities close by and safe. A sunhat, like my go-to choice from Brixton, will keep your head cool and doubles as a nifty little fan if the heat gets particularly stifling.

Bring whatever pair of sunglasses you wish, but be sure to buy a pair from a local New Orleans company as a souvenir too. I bought my pair of Krewe sunglasses several years ago when they first debuted on the scene. Since then, I’ve worn them countless times, brought them on every trip, and received compliments each step of the way. With this brand of sunglasses, you’re paying for quality, but also their lifetime warranty, just in case! I think I, with the help of my St. Louis Classic sunglasses, have become their biggest, unofficial spokesperson.

My all white outfit in front of the breath-taking St. Louis Cathedral not only kept me cool, but disguised quite a mess as I munched on beignets from Cafe du Monde. This eyelet blouse from J. Crew Factory is as cute as a button and will be a repeat through out the season.

For a complete breakdown to New Orleans packing, including an eye-catching swim suit for lounging at one of the city’s many rooftop pools, be sure to visit my packing guide below. If you have any questions, feel free to comment or pass long along an e-mail. What are you packing for your next trip?

Katie

50 Years of Joy

This past weekend, I popped down to my favorite city for a quick little vacation. While New Orleans has so much appeal, from the architecture to the history to the food, this particular trip was all about the music. Every year, during the last weekend in April and first weekend in May, the city hosts their annual Jazz Fest and this year was the big 5-0! Cheers to 50 years of Joy! Four years ago, David and I had our first big trip together to Jazz Fest and it will always have a special place in my heart.

As far as music festivals go, I cannot recommend this one enough! I’ve heard so many friends and other bloggers talk about how festivals aren’t really their scene or style. I absolutely get it. If you think about the grunge of Burning Man or the pomp of Coachella, music festivals can seem really high maintenance and a whole lot of work. Consider Jazz Fest to be right in the middle, the sweet spot where you can come as you are and enjoy good music and food in the process. Being able to visit one of our country’s greatest cities is just a huge bonus.

Even though Jazz Fest is an extremely laid back affair, there are still some tips for you to make the most out of your visit. This was my second and David’s sixth trip and we’ve both learned a lot of tricks along the way from our own experiences and, simply, talking to other Fest-goers.

  • Expect Rain: It’s not really a Jazz Fest season if you don’t have at least one day of rain. My first year of going was probably the rainiest on record and I found myself wading through shin deep water. That being said, don’t forget to bring your rainy day gear. This could include a rain jacket, umbrella, or rain boots. At the very least, you should definitely wear water proof sandals or worn out sneakers that you don’t mind parting with when it’s all over. Even on the sunniest day, mud can and will be a factor.
  • Shade is Your Friend: On sunny days, the heat and humidity in Louisiana is nothing to mess with. Each day this year, we were greeted to 80 degrees and cloudless skies. It was gorgeous, but it’s a lot to be out in the sun from 11 am to 7 pm. Be sure to find some shady spots, especially during the hottest parts of the day. My biggest piece of advice is to spend some time in the tented stage areas. They give you a taste of great local music and relief from the heat. My personal favorite will always be the Gospel Tent. If you choose to stay outside a big sunhat and layers of SPF 30 or more can go a long way.
  • Cash is King: Almost everything about Jazz Fest runs on cash and it can be a pretty miserable time if you come light-handed. Essentials, like a bottle water, are around $3 and the prices just go up from there. A proper lunch typically starts at around $8, but there are other snacks for a little bit cheaper. To save a few dollars, you also bring in your own reusable water bottle to fill up when you get inside. Just in case, ATMs are scattered around and a handful of food vendors do accept card. You’ll probably want to buy some fun souvenirs, like their annual poster or eye-catching official shirt. Again, cash!
  • Come Hungry: Not only is Jazz Fest a music event, but it’s a food one as well. In every corner, you will find the best food that Louisiana and the New Orleans area has to offer. I’m extremely partial to the Crawfish Monica and Shrimp Po-Boys, but there are tons of other cuisines to try. New Orleans, surprisingly, has a strong Vietnamese incluence with food to match. The city’s famous sno-balls are a great cool treat for a hot, Southern day.

  • Pace Yourself: This tip is more for how you handle yourself in the French Quarter versus at Jazz Fest. Having an all-nighter out on Bourbon Street sounds like a blast, I would know because I’ve had several, but it could really ruin your next day at Jazz Fest. Nothing is more miserable than having to spend all day in the hot sun when you’re sleep deprived and hungover. Have your fun, but save the crazy nights until after Jazz Fest is over. The same is true for while you’re at Jazz Fest. With all sorts of wines, beers, and daiquiris offered, it’s very easy to go too big too soon.
  • The More the Merrier: If you can round up your fun, music-loving friends, I would definitely say to travel to Jazz Fest in a group. Once you get there, you will see a city of camping chairs and umbrellas for groups of people who have claimed their territory. Sets of flags make everyone’s spot unique. There’s a pretty genuine honor system amongst Jazz Festers and it’s almost a guarantee that no one will touch your space. From there, you and all of your friends can venture out to see the several shows that are going on at any given time, but still have a point to rendezvous at when the headliners come on at the end of the day.
  • Just Be Yourself: This is not the kind of festival to just be still and listen. The music featured is the kind that dives deep into your soul and will have your toes tapping in seconds. Embrace that urge to cut a rug and then dance it out. The happiest people at Jazz Fest are the people who are living in the moment. No one will judge you for how loud you sing along or how crazily you dance, but someone may join in with you in the process.

If it were up to me, I would go to Jazz Fest for both weekends each and every year. There isn’t a happier bunch of people who all come together to celebrate the joys of life. No matter where you’re from, good food and good music are the ultimate unifiers. This may have been the 50th, but I’m ready to book my trip for the 100th and beyond. An event this good will always stand the test of time.

If you are feeling inspired to go yourself, I hope to see you there! Until then, I’ve rounded up all of the little things that you should definietely remember to pack. That way, you can have as great a time as I did!

Love from NYC,
Katie

NYC Update: Vol. 5

April 26, 2019

Sweatshirt || Jeans || Flats || Clutch || Sunglasses

I may currently be in New Orleans, but I’ve had so many new restaurants and adventures this past month I couldn’t help but share! After a “mild” first winter, the city has come back alive and I’m all for it. In the Upper East Side, in particular, there are gorgeous blooms and blossoms around almost every corner. Spring also means welcoming back outdoor dining and the sidewalks are packed with diners. Here’s what I’m currently loving in the city.

NYC, Soho, Style Blogger, J. Crew, Tuckernuck, Navy, Preppy, Stripes
  • Ferry over Subway (FDR Drive & 34th Street, Murray Hill): On the first truly beautiful weekend of the year, we wanted to go explore Williamsburg and see what all the hype was all about. Instead of taking three different trains, we opted for a much more scenic route and hopped on the ferry. For about the same price as a subway swipe, you can see the city from a new perspective and breath some (mildly) fresher air. Since they serve drinks on board, making it a booze cruise is also an option.
  • Spoon Table Bar (40 East 33rd Street, Murray Hill): Before we took our maiden voyage on the ferry, we popped into this little brunch spot in Murray Hill. I’m not sure what brought me to this particular spot, since I heard about it from a quick google search, but I’m already a fan. Their breakfast menu covers all the classics, including my go-to huevos rancheros, and their Bloody Mary was top notch.
  • Fette Sau (354 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg): This restaurant came highly recommended from a friend and he has some pretty great tastes. Since I didn’t even bother to look at the menu before going, I assumed we were heading to a French bistro. Even the sign outside, with its dainty pink, neon script, was pointing in that direction What I absolutely didn’t expect was a former garage turned BBQ joint. As a southerner, the food was incredible and gave me one of those surreal feelings of food contentment. Pro Tip: Be sure to end your meal with their brownies, you’ll thank me later.

  • Maman (239 Centre Street, Soho): If you are looking for a sweet and thoughtful spot to have your Sunday morning brunch, then look no further. Everything about this restaurant really speaks to me, from it’s blue and white decor to the insanely good food. Even the iced coffee, which I swear has hints of lavender or something floral, was noteworthy.
  • PJ Clarkes (915 3rd Avenue, Midtown East): Always go with the original! Although this has turned into a chain around the city and parts of the northeast, the original location is still standing at 55th Street and 3rd Avenue. In fact, it’s been in that exact spot since 1884. Some big names have wandered through for a meal including Nat King Cole, Buddy Holly, and Jackie Kennedy. Don’t let the age fool you though, it’s one of the best burgers I’ve had in the city and requires frequent trips.
  • Freehold (45 S 3rd Street, Williamsburg): Let me start by saying that this bar wasn’t quite my scene, but I still had a great time anyways. It honestly reminded me of a lot of the bars that I’m used to in Tampa or Tallahassee. It was crowded, with lots of young professionals, and fancy drinks. All of that being said, it had a really great outdoor space and very diverse cocktail list. We actually got there when it first opened for the day and grabbed a seat at the bar, but when we left, the line to get in was around the block. Clearly, this was the place to be on a Sunday afternoon.

As always, please feel free to let me know of any great restaurants in the city. I’m Manhattan based, but we’ve heard a lot of amazing things about the food scene in Queens. I can’t wait to keep following my stomach in the Big Apple!

Love from NYC,
Katie
