Spring Time Dress Down

April 17, 2019

Dress || Wedges || Scarf || Handbag || Sunglasses || Bracelet

After a blissful weekend of not doing much of anything, I think I’ve found my new weekend uniform. I originally posted about this oversized navy and white striped dress when I visited Bermuda, here. At the time, I thought it would just be a run-of-the-mill preppy staple, the kind of dress I could throw on and dress up for a quick dinner or date night out. The past weekend, I even wore this exact outfit while out at brunch.

Now that I’m officially on Spring Break, I’ve found a whole new use for this $30 ASOS dress, as an over-sized sweatshirt! The soft, Terry material is just perfect for lounging or doing chores around the apartment. All I had to do was throw on a pair of my Jack Roger sandals and I was ready to run errands around the Upper East Side.

In yet another attempt to print mix this season, it’s always fun to add this nautical themed scarf from Tuckernuck. I’ve already worn it quite a few times, but haven’t really gone into how amazing it is. First off, it’s huge! At 51 inches square, there is an infinite number of ways to wear and style it. I’m also a huge fan of what a perfect Hermes dupe this is. If you are coveting a designer scarf, but can’t afford the price tag, Tuckernuck is the way to go. They are literally on-tenth of the price and an amazing accessory to have.

Being the home-grown Florida girl, I actually thought a lot about what I would wear when moving to the Upper East Side. A standard weekend uniform in St. Pete would include a way oversized t-shirt and running shorts. In my mind, that wasn’t going to be good enough for the stylish UES. I even thought about what I could wear to walk Tripp in the morning. What I quickly learned is that what I wear isn’t nearly as an important as I thought it would be. Still, it’s always nice to find a new laidback outfit that takes no planning at all.

Creative Black Tie

Dress || Heels || Clutch || Bracelet || Earrings

Over the weekend, my work hosted their annual auction gala. It’s a fun event to mingle with parents and raise money for our school. I was really looking forward to it, but was even more excited when I read that the dress code was ‘creative black tie.’ At the time, I had no idea what that meant, but it sounded like it was right up my alley.

Upon some investigation, I learned that ‘creative black tie’ is simply a twist on the traditional. You still have the opportunity to wear a stunning gown, but you can also add unique accents and statement pieces to really help you stand out. Think about bright colors, intersting fabrics, and non-traditional silhouettes. Of course, black and navy area always acceptable too.

Since I’m still on my shopping freeze for Lent, I looked to Rent the Runway to find a gown that would stand out, but also stick with my preppy and lady-like style. As soon as my eyes landed on this red lace gown from Monique Lhuillier, I knew I had found the dress. The color was nothing short of stunning and the perfect kind of vibrant for a night out. Dainty, Dotted Swiss fabric was a perfect compliment to the full floral lace. Everything about this dress really spoke to me and I was ready to make my purchase.

Since this dress is such a show-stopper all on its own, I let everything else about the ensemble stay neutral. I could have opted for other statement pieces, but didn’t want to have too much of a fashion risk. Tall black heels from Steve Madden gave me the height I needed to pull off a floor length dress and exposed just a touch of my fresh pedicure. My tortoise clutch from Tuckernuck already matched just about everything in my closet already and seemed like a perfect choice for the night.

I honestly hope that you get an invite to a Creative Black Tie event. Better yet, why not throw one yourself?! After having shopped for one, I can say that it is now one of my favorite dress codes. Feel free to make a trendy statement, take some risks, and just have fun with what you wear. I’ve linked up the other dresses I was considering down below and let me know what you would wear.

NYC in Spring

April 12, 2019

Blouse || Pants || Wedges || Scarf (similar)|| Handbag

Now that Winter is finally over, I can look forward to my weekends again. There will be no more bunkering down, trying to figure out how to stay warm. Instead, I have a spoil of riches to try and find out what to do. I’ll give you a hint, it all involves spending as much time outside as possible. In a word, Spring in New York has been magical so far. Through the extra crowds of people, there is a fresh sense of optimism that I had never experienced here before. It’s helped me understand why anything can truly happen in this city.

My NYC Spring Bucket List has grown more and more by the day. Everyone has a different opinion on what the best experiences are and I’m ready to take them head on. In just a week, I will be on Spring Break from school and this teacher feels like she’s going to have all the time in the world. There isn’t a more perfect opportunity to take advantage of what this city has to offer. Here are some of my top picks!

  • Walk the Brooklyn Bridge: Is it cliché? Probably… But it’s still something I absolutely want to experience for myself. It’s hard to think of this city’s highlights without mentioning this landmark. It’s the perfect excuse to be outside, get some exercise, and see the city from a new vantage point.
  • Go to see a baseball game: David and I both have family ties in Queens, meaning we should probably cheer on the Mets. Still, Yankee Stadium is just a few stops away on the 4-5 Train and is a lot more convenient to get to. Whichever we pick, I’ll be sure to root, root, root for the home team.

  • Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry: Launching near Bowling Green, in the Financial District, I have heard from many people that this is the best way to take in the city and see the views. This is especially true at dusk, in the Spring.
  • Have a cocktail at the MET Rooftop Bar: I never need an excuse to enjoy a drink outside, but to be on a rooftop bar at my favorite museum in the city sounds like heaven. Opening in just a few short weeks, this spot offers unobstructed views of Central Park and the skyline. Cheers!

  • Pack a lunch for Central Park: Doesn’t this just sound so romantic? I love the idea of wrapping a homemade sandwich and packing up an old-school style picnic basket and blanket. The weather will be just perfect to find a quiet grassy area of the park and enjoy some prime people watching. Sparkling wine is not required, but highly recommended.
  • Visit a Botanical Garden: Whether it’s visiting the one in Brooklyn or the Bronx, I’m happy either way. They both offer several festivals and events throughout the season and are realitively easy to get to. I may be the worst at keeping plants alive, but I always appreciate someone with a green thumb and the fruits of their labor.

Even in the city, nothing says Spring to me like bringing out the gingham. I was so happy to dust off these gingham pants from J. Crew for a new season. Even though they laid dormant for all of Fall and Winter, they are one of my favorites. I kept the bulk of the outfit monochromatic, per usual, but experimented with a pop of color and print mixing with this nautical themed scarf from Tuckernuck. Since it already meshes so well with the bulk of my wardrobe, it will become a staple piece throughout the Spring and Summer.

I hope you all are loving your Spring so far. If you have any other favorite seasonal activities, especially in NYC, be sure to let me know in the comments below!

Love from NYC,
Katie
