Me and FSU

Me and FSU

FSU, Florida State, football, Hill Flint

Sweater || Jeans || Sneakers || Sunglasses

I’ve sat all weekend, somewhat patiently, to finally get to today. It’s FSU Gameday! I am a die hard Seminole fan and maybe the biggest thing I need to learn as a new New Yorker is where all my fellow Noles hang. Back home, every TV is guaranteed to have the FSU playing (and probably with the sound on).

To start the season out with a bang, I thought it would be fun to share some quick facts about me and Florida State. You’ll learn real quick that I’m not blowing smoke when I call myself a fan…

  • My first FSU game was when I was only 3 months old. One of my favorite pictures is from this game (where we completely blew out the other team, by the way), with my dad holding me in front of the fountain at the Wescott Building. My fellow Noles, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
  • I had a pet cockatiel growing up named Charlie. He heard FSU games so much that he learned to sing the Florida State fight song. I nominate him for the most talented bird in the world.
  • My first swear word was when I was watching an FSU game at home with my dad. If memory serves, it was just a little C-R-A-P. Clearly I was not a fan of what I was watching. Sorry mom!
  • I was a varsity swimmer and now get to enjoy the Varsity Club at home games. I was so sure of my decision to go to FSU that I didn’t visit other schools, even though I was heavily recruited. My college career wasn’t as successful as I would have hoped, but I wouldn’t have done anything different.
  • I graduated from FSU in 2013 with my degree in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Child Development. It is definitely one of the proudest days of my life.
  • I kept pushing back a first date with David because I had FSU football season tickets and didn’t want to miss a game. He gives me such a hard time over this, but I’m pretty sure I’ve converted him. He at least cheers along with me.

I know everyone has special little details that makes their college experience so special. I would love to hear about it! Yes, I want to hear even if you’re a UF or Clemson fan. Comment below something that makes you love your college even more.

Love from FSU,
Katie

I am so happy to finally share some of the pictures from our wedding day. Cathy Durig, our photographer, is just so talented! I’m going to have some fun sharing our wedding day details with you.

Let’s start with the dress! Dresses with a lot of poof and frill have never really spoken to me. I also wasn’t look for something too tight or form-fitting. My mom gave the input that whatever I wore had to have some kind of strap. After shopping around, I came across the winner at David’s Bridal. The details on the bodice and slight cap sleeve were so flattering, but I secretly loved the fact that it was from the clearance section. My parents had given me a very generous dress budget, but I didn’t want to go overboard. Instead, I was able to splurge on this pair of Loeffler Randall heels that I knew I would be able to wear more than once.

The most important detail of my dress was the belting I was able to add. My Grandma Brennan and I were incredibly close. In fact, I wanted to honor her by getting married on her birthday. Unfortunately, her own wedding dress, with its beautiful lace detail and bateau neckline, did not stand the test of time or Florida humidity. The only salvageable piece was the beading that went around the waist and neckline. It had almost an ivy quality to the pattern and I knew I wanted to incorporate it somehow. The ladies at the David’s Bridal alterations team were to able to make it the belt on my own dress and could not have done a better job! I’ll always have it to treasure.

Now, let’s talk about David. How handsome does he look in his royal blue suit?! His groomsmen didn’t look half bad either. Our wedding colors were navy and emerald green, but the pop of lighter blue was the perfect statement. The local plant life added as the backdrop to tie in the little hints of green accents.

As I wrote this, I realized that I wanted to use the word ‘perfect’ to describe each and every aspect of our day. The stress that over a year of planning brought instantly melted away when the big day finally arrived and there’s not one piece I would change. So many pieces contributed to this day going so smoothly and I will try and share everything for all of my brides-to-be out there: our reception details, my girls and I getting ready, why we decided to have a Catholic wedding… If you have any questions about anything (and there’s no detail too small), be sure to ask!

Love from NYC,
Katie

This summer was an absolute whirlwind! I got married, went on a two week honeymoon in Italy, and moved from Florida to NYC. If that wasn’t enough on my plate, I also decided to finish up my Master’s degree. I obviously love being married and exploring my new city has been such a fun adventure, but getting my Masters is what I’m most proud of. That journey started in early 2016 when I enrolled at the University of South Florida in their Reading Education program. I was in my third year of teaching and had finally decided what I wanted the next steps in my career to be. I’ve learned so much from this program that instantly made an impact in my classroom.

This all wouldn’t have been possible without my parents. Growing up, the narrative was never ‘if’ you go to college, but ‘when’. After I graduated from FSU, it shifted from not ‘if’ you get your Masters, but ‘when’. I think my parents are finally ready to let me take an academic break, but because of how they always made education the priority, I notice myself saying not ‘if’ I get my doctorate, but ‘when’.

With moving to New York, the career path that I thought I was on had to take a little bit of a shift. I’m switching from the public to private school sector and have to learn a whole slew of new policies and standards. It’s a detour, but I see how many different new avenues are available to me here. I have new local colleges to research and programs to look into. If I let myself really daydream, I think about making policies for NYC schools or even at the UN. Who knows, if you keep reading my blog for long enough, you might even get to see me become Doctor Kennedy.

I’m a firm believer in being a lifelong learner. There is so much power in admitting to, “I don’t know, but I sure want to learn.” My husband often comments on how I ask a lot of questions when meeting people for the first time. I’m curious by nature and like to learn as much as I can. I teach that to my students and it’s important that I practice what I preach. Even if I don’t get my doctorate, you can bet that I won’t stop taking college classes and trying to be the best I can be in my teaching life.

What is something that you want to learn more about? It could be for your personal life, your professional life, or just for fun. Indulge and allow yourself to be a lifelong learner. It’s a little step that can help you be your best self.

Love from NYC,
Katie
