Olympic Lessons to Live By
📍 Downtown St. Pete

Tokyo, Olympics, mental health, lessons, J. Crew

Shirt || Jeans || Wedges || Similar Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet

Like so many of you, I was glued to the TV during the past few weeks watching the Tokyo Olympics. Without fail, I become enthralled with every sport, from the headliners, like swimming or gymnastics, to the ones with lesser coverage, like weightlifting. Maybe it’s because I had my own Olympic dreams when I was a competitive swimmer, but I applaud each athlete for their hard work and dedication to the sport. While every Olympiad is filled with heartwarming stories, I was really struck by some of the morals that seemed to be a theme throughout this year’s games. Here are my favorite Olympic lessons that we could all live by.

Always Prioritize Your Mental Health

The biggest story to come from Tokyo probably surrounds Simone Biles’ decision to withdraw from the individual all-around competition, citing her mental health as a reason. While many people were quick to judge, I and countless others believe that what she did was so incredibly brave. This is a reminder that it is always time to prioritize your mental health, no matter the circumstances. Luckily, this has become a more accepted mindset, but if it’s not with your work or loved ones, you don’t need their permission. Even scheduling in the occasional ‘mental health day’ can do wonders for your well-being.

You Don’t Need an Audience to do Great Things

This Olympics was highly different from years previous in that there were no audiences to watch the athletes compete. My heart goes to the families who couldn’t see their loved ones excel in person, particularly the Finke family, whom I’ve known since I was a kid. Their son and my former teammate, Bobby, won two golds in Tokyo, and I couldn’t be happier for him. Still, even without the spectators, these athletes did incredible things. World records were rewritten, and personal bests were shattered. The next time you want to reach a goal, remember that you don’t always need an audience to see you succeed. Sometimes your own motivation is all you need.

Tokyo, Olympics, mental health, lessons, J. Crew

There’s a First Time for Everything

Something that makes first-place victories even sweeter is when they are the first to accomplish their goal. Maybe they’re the first American to win in foil fencing, the first to win a gold for Bermuda, or the first to win in the new Olympic surfing events. Perhaps you have your own goal, large or small, but you would be the first to accomplish it. Keep going! Even when you have moments of doubt like “no one’s ever done this before,” keep going! There’s a first time for everything, and your hard work can eventually lead you to your own victory.

Celebrate Beyond First Place

Olympic swimmer and medalist Lily King talked very openly about the American habit of not celebrating gold and silver. While I don’t always agree with her outspoken nature, this statement is something that I could fully get behind. We tend to have a nasty habit of only focusing on being number one: in sports, at work, or even our personal goals. Friendly competition can be very healthy, but celebrations shouldn’t always be based on standings alone. Instead, try to focus on your improvements. If you make strides towards your end goal and block out the additional noise, a ranking can be just one metric to monitor your success.

If At First You Don’t Succeed…

British diver Tom Daley has been a mainstay at the Olympic Games in the 10 meter since 2008. Always striving for gold, it finally happened in the 10 meter synchronized event. His reaction and celebration nearly brought me to tears. He kept his eye on his goals and never gave up. Outside of the pool, he inspires as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. While the “try, try again” mentality is a cliche, it’s still nonetheless a powerful one. So many Olympic athletes have continued to compete, and some ultimately win, despite failures and setbacks. No matter the goal you’re trying to accomplish, the same can be true for you.

Do What You Love, Love What You Do

Perhaps my favorite story from the 2020 Olympics is that of gymnast Oksana Chusovitina. At age 46, she competed in her eighth and final Olympiad. She has represented the Soviet Union, Germany, and Uzbekistan, winning gold in 1992. She is considered a role model because of her continued dedication to the sport. It’s crystal clear that she genuinely loves what she does. While she claims that Tokyo is her final Olympic appearance, I don’t want to count her out and would love to see her one more time at the Paris 2024 games.

Tokyo, Olympics, mental health, lessons, J. Crew

Finally, I want to give one last thank you to all of the incredible athletes who represented in Tokyo. No matter what country you call home, you serve as role models for little girls and boys all over the world. I was once one of those kids, wanting to be just like swimmers Jenny Thompson or Natalie Coughlin. How you present yourself away from the arena means more than the medals you have around your neck. As an adult, I’ve found a renewed inspiration by the real-life lessons these Olympians have so wonderfully served.

Our Rattan and Blue Living Room

August 6, 2021

Our Rattan and Blue Living Room
📍 The Kennedy Bungalow

Maxi Dress

David and I are approaching a year of living in our first home here in sunny St. Pete, and I realized how little I’ve shared about it. I’m giving myself a break since half of that time we were in remodel mode after Hurricane Eta. Now that the literal dust has finally started to settle, I’m putting together each room, one at a time. While you’ve already seen my little office space, the tour continues with the rest of our living room. While nowhere near perfect, it has become my favorite room in the house. Rattan and blue are always such a good idea. Join me, won’t you?

Leather Couch || Greek Key Pillows (Similar) || Rattan End Table (Similar) || Silver Lamps || Floral Curtains

Style Inspiration

While David’s and my design styles are entirely different (he’s modern and I’m more traditional), we agree on one thing. Minimalism! I love a clean, neat space with small accents to show our personality and life together. With our living room, our whole home, it all started with paint color. Since I wanted our house to be a calm and inviting space, I painstakingly studied different shades of blue to find the right one. We ultimately settled on Valspar’s Gray Opal. Don’t let the name fool you because it’s, in fact, a beautiful shade of robin’s egg blue that magically works like a neutral. No matter where life brings us, I have found my signature wall color.

Rattan Chairs (Similar) || Blue Garden Stool || Black Ecuador Blanket || Similar Navy Floral Pillows || Blue Patterned Pillows

The Seating

Apart from a photogenic Basset Hound, the focal point of any living room is created with your seating. For a couch, David and I both knew we wanted a brown leather couch but didn’t want to spend a small fortune to find one. The other quality on our list was to find one that was easy to move. We found exactly what we were looking for with Burrow. Their seating designs are entirely modular, meaning that they can be broken down into smaller, more manageable pieces. The bonus is that this also means this couch can grow with us to create a larger sectional. The Chestnut brown is as soft as butter, something that our dog, Tripp, absolutely loves. At any given point in the day, there’s a high chance of him taking up the entire couch. In reality, it’s his, and we get to borrow it on occasion.

My love for rattan won out for additional seating when I scored this set of chairs from IKEA, of all places. Accented with a collection of throw pillows, they are incredibly comfortable. These chairs are light but still extremely durable and easy to move around the house as needed. While Tripp is curious, he has yet to jump into them, thank goodness.

The Accents

Continuing with my study in rattan… How great are these end tables from Target? At less than $100 each, I loved the simplicity and versatility. While color palettes come and go, I know I can use these end tables forever! Other accents around the space were originally from our apartment in the Upper East Side. No matter where I live, some things are just too perfect to part with. The best example of that is this set of silver ginger jar lamps from Safavieh. I consider these to be the find of the decade.

Pro Tip: Consider dark outdoor pillowcases if you have a four-legged friend with a penchant for shed and slobber. This set of Greek key pillowcases has been put through the wringer but still looks as crisp as the day I got them!

Console || Ginger Jar || Picture Frame || Chinoiserie Bowl || Sign || Rattan Bag

The Console

When you enter our home, the first thing you’re greeted by is our console. While it serves as a convenient catch-all, it also plays host to some of our favorite keepsakes. The most noticeable is the custom Kennedy sign. If you’ve ever been to New Orleans Jazz Fest, you may recognize the style. It was created by the same artist who makes welcome signs for the featured musicians. This plastic work of art may not look like much, but it’s one of my most cherished things in the home.

A small wave clock sits next to a wedding photo and a collection of shells from Harbour Island and Boca Grande. It was crafted by my uncle, a very talented carpenter and surfer on the East Coast of Florida. I’m pretty sure I’ve had it since I was a kid, but I’m so happy for it to be a part of our first home. It’s the little things on this console that make me so happy!

My Workspace

And finally, one last look at my workspace, originally posted about here. I work from home, and this is where I spend the vast majority of my day. Because of that, this area needs to be comfortable, functional and inspiring. The green writer’s desk from Wayfair makes for a fun pop of color against the blue accent pieces. A framed picture from our honeymoon on Lake Como gives me a sense of wanderlust while still motivating me to make it through the 9-5 schedule.

What’s Next?

While I love our space, I know it’s still not entirely done yet. The number one thing you may have noticed is the lack of anything on the walls. Our exterior walls are almost solely windows which creates incredible natural light at all hours of the day. Right now, I’m perfectly happy without blinds, but I know it’s something on our long to-do list. As far as the rest of the walls, they are just begging to have art added. I’ve ordered new pieces that will add even more pops of color and can’t wait to share them when they arrive!

Rattan Chairs (Similar) || Blue Garden Stool || Black Ecuador Blanket || Similar Navy Floral Pillows || Blue Patterned Pillows

Your home should be a complete reflection of who are and be treated like a temple. While personal styles and needs for interior spaces shift over time, I am so content to call this little corner of St. Pete mine. Stayed tuned for even more glimpses into our happy mid-century Florida bungalow.

Katie

Your Complete Guide to Sarah Flint

Your Complete Guide to Sarah Flint
📍St. Pete, Florida

Sarah Flint, guide, heels, Perfect Block

Sweater || Skirt (Similar) || Heels ($50 off with code SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE) || Clutch || Earrings

My love, scratch that… My obsession with Sarah Flint’s shoes has been going strong for almost two years now. It seems like only yesterday when they first popped up on my radar, and I could shop at her Soho boutique. Seriously, where has the time gone? In that time, my collection of shoes has grown to be filled with artistically made shoes. I know there’s no going back. There’s just something so perfect about each style. From the perfected packaging to the sheer quality, you won’t find a more comprehensive brand. Since I frequently am sent asked questions about sizing, quality, and styling, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to create your complete guide to all things Sarah Flint. Let’s go shopping together, shall we?

Note: I always wear size IT 39 with Sarah Flint which is true to size for my typical US 8.5.

For $50 off your first pair of Sarah Flint shoes, use the

Natalie Flats

Why I Love Them

If the Natalie Flats are good enough for the Duchess of Sussex, they are certainly good enough for me! Recently, I’ve put the miles of my Saddle Vanchetta Natalies, and they are always up to the task. Handcrafted in Italy with vegetable-tanned leather, these may just be the most comfortable pair of flats on the market. The asymmetrical bow is subtle but makes them feel so unique.

When I Wear Them

From a midi-length shirt dress to a blazer and jeans combo, the Natalie Flats are a perfect match. Just slip them on, and you’re ready to take on the day. If I want to feel a little dressier and can be worn in place of your favorite casual sneaker, these are my go-to shoes.

Grear Sandals

Why I Love Them

I’m a Florida girl currently in the middle of a hot summer. Sandals are what I live for. When simple flip-flops just won’t do, the Grear Sandal is the perfect elevated option. You can play with the Grecian-styled straps for a fit that is most comfortable for you. From the streets of Palm Beach to the streets of New York, you’ll be perfectly comfortable without the dreaded “breaking in” period.

When I Wear Them

My Grear Sandals have been several trips when these are the only shoes that I’ve packed. For me, a notorious over-packer, that’s a pretty bold move. That’s because I know these shoes are made from such high-quality and you can wear them for any occasion. The better question to ask is, when don’t I wear them!

Perfect Block 30

Why I Love Them

Two words: Arch Support! It’s so rare to find an incredibly chic heel that also includes anatomical arch support. Search no more! The Perfect Block 30 has just enough heel to be considered a dressier shoe, but you won’t have any problem wearing them all day long. In fact, you may even find these to be more comfortable than the flat sandals you have in your closet.

When I Wear Them

My Perfect Block 30 Sandals are in the beautiful White Calf. For some people, white shoes can seem like a tricky item to style, but they are perfect if you live somewhere that’s warm year-round! The height makes them the ideal date night shoe if you know you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. I’ve worn them with midi to maxi-length dresses or a crisp pair of white jeans.

  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Perfect Block 30
    White Calf
  • Black Suede
  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Perfect Block 30
    Sand Calf
  • Gold Nappa

Perfect Block 60

Why I Love Them

The Perfect Block 60 has everything! The beautiful Sand Calf leather goes with just about everything, and the heel’s height gives the illusion of legs for days. Like the Perfect Block 30, I have peace of mind when wearing these heels all evening because of the flawlessly designed arch support.

When I Wear Them

These heels are another winner for date night! While David and I don’t have the starkest height differences, I can still wear these heels without towering over him. Dress these shoes down by pairing them with a button-down shirt and raw hem-cut jeans.

    Black Suede

  • Sand Calf
  • Navy Croc

Perfect Emma

Why I Love Them

As my personal preference, I always prefer a block heel to a thin stiletto. I am more comfortable as I’m walking, giving me all of the confidence in the world. The Perfect Emma is an excellent choice for an everyday heel, especially if you’re in a career where you want to look fashionable but are on your feet all day. The tortoise accent is such a great detail that you can always expect from anything in Sarah Flint’s collection.

When I Wear Them

Teachers, this is the heel for you! Be comfortable without sacrificing style. While I am more partial to wearing the Perfect Emma with midi skirts and dresses, these will look so professional with a pair of crisp work pants or a pencil skirt. Wear them from the day and into the evening without ever skipping a beat.

  • Taupe Suede
  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Perfect Emma
    Navy Suede
  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Perfect Emma
    Black Suede
  • Merlot Suede

Perfect Pump 85

Why I Love Them

You always remember your first! When I lived in NYC, I was in the market for a pair of elegant pointed-toe heels to wear to work and events. The Perfect Pump comes in three different height options, and the 85 is right in the middle. While the 100 is so striking, I don’t trust my coordination enough to wear them. Just like the Block Sandal, the Perfect Pump includes arch support, genuinely making them the perfect heel to wear all day, every day.

When I Wear Them

Stilettos can be tricky. Since moving back to Florida, I don’t wear them as often as when I was in the city. Still, I have these close at hand in for invitations to cocktail parties and soirees. These are my preferred choice for holiday festivities or when I want to feel dressy. The Taupe Suede will match everything in your closet. Just pair with a fabulous cocktail dress, and you are ready for a night of dancing and socializing!

  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Perfect Pump
    Navy Suede
  • Leopard Calf
  • Sand Calf
  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Perfect Pump

  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Alysia Flats
    Alysia x Gravati
  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Mirjana Sandals
    Mirjana
  • Sarah Flint, Shoes, Zeynep Heels
    Zeynep

What I’m Shopping For

Alysia x Gravati Flats

What I find striking about these loafer-style Alysia Flats is the beautiful Sepia Calf. I can just see myself wearing them in a classic white tee and jeans combo. Like the Natalie Flat, these would be a perfect substitute for a casual look that’s still a little more upscale than a pair of sneakers.

Mirjana Sandals

Do I really need an excuse to have another pair of sandals? Of course not! The Mirjana Sandal is one of the newest styles from Sarah Flint, and it has already made quite an impact. Having been sold out once before, I need to order these ASAP! The interwoven bow design is an instant win!

Zeynep Heels

Dear Sarah, please make more heels with pearl details! Seriously, I can’t think of anything better. The Zeynep Heel is a fun update on the Perfect Emma (with grosgrain instead of suede) and will be chic for years to come. I better act quickly because this beautiful shoe is selling out and fast!

Katie
