A Post-Flood Home Q&A
📍 St. Pete, Florida

Back in September, David and I purchased our very first home. It’s a cute little mid-century bungalow in the Shore Acres neighborhood of St. Pete. It needed some work, but it was almost half of our intended budget and I just love a good bargain. We moved in at the beginning of October, had some pre-scheduled travel plans, and then… November came. The first weekend of November, Hurricane/Tropical Storm Eta made its way up the Gulf Coast and our entire neighborhood had extensive flooding. The combination of high tide, storm surge, and extensive rain resulted in 10 inches of water inside our home. Excuse the pun, but it was the perfect storm. While our home isn’t quite presentable yet, I’ve had so many questions about our house and process, I’d thought I dedicate this entire blog post to answering them.

Where did you live after the flood?

While some of our neighbors opted to stay at their homes, I just didn’t feel comfortable while our entire home was being renovated. All of the drywall under 4 feet had to be ripped out and the electronics were shot. Extremely fortunate for us, our previous apartment in Old Northeast was still available. Yes, it was odd moving into this apartment for the third time, but it will always feel like home. I’m so thankful to our friends and landlords for renting the space out to us yet again. As February was starting to wind down, they needed the space again for their family that was coming into town. They have been so gracious to us over the past few years, we were more than happy to oblige. Since the house was 90% done, the timing worked out pretty well.

Are you back in the house?

Yes! While some things need to be finished up, the home is livable. It feels so good to be back home. As of right now, it’s still a moderate construction zone. That means it’s pretty dusty and looks pretty empty and unfurnished. I’m pretty confident that it will be fully done by the end of March and I can fully decorate to my heart’s delight. What is finished looks simply amazing! Our kitchen, which was my favorite room in the house, is back to its former glory. The master bathroom has had a few updates that I’m simply in love with. I can’t wait for the dust to finally settle so I can share all of the details.

What’s next for the house?

We’re not quite sure! Truth be told, David is working for a new company which may require us to move within the next few years. Because of that mindset, a lot of our big projects might be put on hold. When we bought the home, we knew that it probably wouldn’t be our “forever” home. Sure, it would be comfortable for a someday growing family, but you never know what the future will hold. Right now, the top task on my list is to give the outside a new coat of white paint for a fresh look. I’m also looking forward to redoing the landscaping. Bougainvilleas, bird of paradise, and hibiscus will all go a long way to adding some life to our little bungalow.

Did you have insurance?

Yes! Because of where our home is, a whopping two feet above sea level, flood insurance was a non-negotiable from a mortgage standpoint. I’m so thankful for it! Our insurance company was a breeze to work with. The most time-consuming aspect of making an insurance claim is documenting all of the damage. David and I had to create a spreadsheet of what we lost and how much it cost. The big things, like our appliances and electronics, were pretty easy to get down. What was really exhausting was all of the odds and ends, namely my clothes that took the brunt of the damage. Going forward, for if our home ever floods again, it would have been so helpful to already have had this spreadsheet created.

Before I sign off, I want to thank you all for the extremely words and support you gave me during this crazy period in my life. For so many, our homes, emotionally, are our most valuable possessions. There’s nothing in the world that can truly prepare you for losing it. My biggest takeaway from this whole ordeal is to count your blessings and find that silver lining.

Lavender is the New Pink

Lavender is the New Pink

You’ve heard of “Orange Is the New Black” and “Orange Is the New Pink”, but is it possible that “Lavender is the New Pink”? Especially during this time of year, new color trends begin to pop up like a bunch of spring flowers. Across nearly all of my favorite brands and designers, I’ve been seeing a lot of lavender. It’s so much so, that I’m beginning to think it’s taking over my closet.

Lavender for Work

I know this doesn’t fully apply to everyone yet, but lavender is starting to make its way into the workplace. The best example I can think of is this stunning shirt dress from Talbots. I already ordered it and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive It absolutely screams classic teacher, but can work with whatever your work setting is, online included! If your idea of “work” wear is more casual, this button-down from J. Crew fits the bill. Pair with your favorite pair of white jeans and you have an outfit that works from Day to Night.

Does anyone else think that loungewear is just too good to pass up? The softer the fabric, the harder it is to imagine wearing anything else. The dreamy cotton from J. Crew is not a misnomer. It sincerely feels like you’re wearing a cloud. Pair the Vintage Lilac Henley Shirt with the Jogger Pants and you’ll be ready for a day of relaxation. Just in case your feet feel a little chilled, definitely consider slipping into these cozy UGG slippers.

Lavender for the Beach

Hey, you soon to be Spring Breakers. Still, trying to find some fun and colorful pieces for your travels? Adding a splash of lavender is guaranteed to pop against your fresh tan and a tropical drink. J. Crew has several options in stunning shades of lavender. My favorite set is always the French Bikini Top and Boy Shorts combination. It’s youthful, while still offering plenty of coverage. Layer with this Irish Linen Shirt for a monochromatic cover-up.

Lavender Accessories

Going for the full lavender look can be a lot, and I totally get that! Instead, you may want to consider adding a dash of color with some accessories. Talbots has this stunning silk scarf that matched perfectly with my cardigan set. It feels Hermes inspired, but I never need a reason to buy a new scarf. These statement earrings from Tuckernuck are incredible for an easy statement piece. Honestly, when it comes to lavender, the sky is the limit!

Whether you call it Lavender, Violet, or Purple, there’s a way this color can work for you. As you think about your Spring wardrobe, definitely consider adding a dash of this regal shade into the mix. It’s the bit of freshness you just may have been searching for. Happy shopping!

Quick Trip to the Hard Rock

Quick Trip to the Hard Rock
📍 Tampa, Florida

Hard Rock, Tampa, Seminole, pool day, Florida

Cover-Up || Swimsuit Top || Swimsuit Bottom || Sandals || Sunglasses || Similar Tote Bag

This is my favorite time of year in Florida! After a not-so-hard “winter” in the Sunshine State, we finally have returned to warm days. Since peak summer hasn’t fully hit, both the temperature and humidity level and pretty reasonable. I find myself saying “this is a really gorgeous day” every few hours. Because of that, I’m taking full advantage of the weather. Without even realizing it, I’ve been pool hopping at some of the best hotels in the Tampa Bay Area. The most recent visit was a quick trip to the newly renovated pool at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Tampa with my mom. If you haven’t visited, you just need to see this one for yourself!

The Location

Located just east of downtown Tampa, the Seminole Hard Rock is an easy destination from anywhere in Tampa Bay or Greater Orlando. Currently, the Hard Rock Tampa is the 4th largest casino in the United States, but it didn’t start out that way. When it originally opened in 1982, it was just a small high-stakes bingo hall. This is because the land was given reservation status for the Seminole Tribe of Florida and they actually own the entire Hard Rock franchise. It may be because I’m a Florida State grad, but the tribe’s history absolutely fascinates me. As you explore the hotel, be sure to look for Seminole-inspired influences.

The Venue

As I get older, the more I appreciate a great resort pool. Sitting poolside gives me the Vitamin D I’m craving, without worrying about the beach. The chairs are provided for me, a frozen drink is just a few steps away, and it’s completely sand free. The Seminole Hard Rock pool did not disappoint! There were plenty of chairs, some even in the water. I always appreciate a good cabana or just a shadier spot to get away from the sun. Both were present. I especially loved eating at the Pool Bar. I ordered a Pina Colada (my go-to frozen drink)and chicken quesadilla. Both were delicious! A second pool was reserved for VIP guests. Sadly, I don’t fall into that category, but it looked perfectly serene.

The Evening

After a few hours of soaking up the Florida sun, don’t forget the SPF, we went back to our room to get ready for dinner. I wanted to really enjoy the evening with my mom, so the camera stayed in the hotel room. We wandered the gigantic gaming space, looking for any slot machine that caught our eye. I even got to walk away with $60 more than what I started with. Dinner at The Rez was simply delicious, but the highlight of the evening was probably lounging in my room afterward, snuggled in a robe. Seriously, isn’t that just the best feeling? From a social distancing stand-point… Marks are required, shared spaces are constantly being sanitized, and plastic shields help separate the machines and tables.

Whenever I talk about going to the Seminole Hard Rock with friends, I always give the disclaimer that I’m not much of a gambler. I have no qualms about throwing some cash into a Penny-Slot, but I definitely have a time limit. From fine dining, to events, and just great people watching, it’s nice to know that this casino offers so much more than slots and card tables. Book a room or get a day-pass and this stunning pool can be all yours!
