At Home Wine Night

At Home Wine Night

One of my favorite luxuries is wine night. Whether it’s at home or a wine bar, I always prefer to sip my wine al fresco. While many Friday nights I can be found at St. Pete’s Annata, my preferences have started to change ever since buying a house. This social butterfly has been enjoying quiet weekends at home more and more. Since I will never let go of my cherished wine nights, I decided to bring them to the Kennedy Bungalow. Here’s my recipe for a perfect evening for two from over the weekend!

The Set-Up

As the saying goes, “presentation is everything!” If I’m going to be honest, this is my weakness when it comes to creating an at-home charcuterie spread. I have so much to learn and have been shopping for fun additions since the weekend. Since it’s best to just keep things simple, here’s my list to get things rolling…

  • Tablecloth: This literally sets the stage and the possibilities are endless! The beauty of finding a great, all occasions tablecloth is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to do it! I spent $15 on this light blue linen pick, which was great since we spilled just the tiniest dash of wine. If the stain doesn’t come out, I can always buy another one!
  • Cheese Board: My cousin gifted me this fun, and always appropriate Florida cheese board. While you may not call the Sunshine State home, it still makes for the perfect shape! Meats are on one side and cheese are on the other. We also have a Vermont board, but I can safely say that it doesn’t get used nearly as often.
  • Plates: I have an ever-growing Blue Italian by Spode collection. These salad plates, in the beautiful blue and white design, were exactly what we needed for a civilized wine night.
  • Cheese Cutters: This cheese knife set was a recent purchase. Since sometimes I want to alternate between soft and hard cheeses, this set runs the whole gambit.
  • Wine Glasses: You can’t exactly have a wine night without wine glasses, right? Honestly, I’m not that picky when it comes to white wine versus red wine specific glasses. This hand-blown set looks great and is surprisingly affordable.

The Spread
  • Wine: When we first moved into our new home, we received quite a few bottles of wine. They had long been calling my name and we finally decided to uncork one. In my mind, fall is the red wine season, but any bottle will do! We loved our red blend from Poliziano.
  • Cheese: On this particular night, I couldn’t decide on just one cheese. We went with an Irish white cheddar from Kerry, a favorite in the Kennedy household, and a spreadable goat cheese. They had two very different flavor profiles that both paired perfectly with our wine.
  • Bread: While you can get really fancy with your bread and cracker selection, that wasn’t the case this weekend! Just give me a fresh, French baguette and I’m good to go!
  • Honey: It’s definitely the Floridian in me, but I just love orange blossom honey. It’s by far my favorite! I drizzle it on bread whenever cheese is involved. I’ve recently started buying from local beekeepers and it makes such a big difference in flavor.
  • Mustard: For something a little more savory, we love adding Creole mustard to our charcuterie boards. It has a little extra dash of spice, but is far from overpowering.

The Scene

What I love the most about an at-home wine night is that the scene can be whatever you want it to be. When I cooked up this scheme, I was envisioning a relaxing dinner outside, but Mother Nature had a different idea. I’m talking about an evening of rain. Instead, we nestled the table for two next to the window in our soon-to-be dining room. We lit a candle and it almost felt like an intimate Italian restaurant… That is if you ignore the boxes that still need to be unpacked.

The Dress Code

This may be going above and beyond what your own wine night may look like. Still, I’ve always loved to play dress-up, even if it’s just for me and me alone. On Saturday’s fête, I had to don this beautiful caftan from J. Crew. I felt like such a hostess, even if it was just for David. If I just wore sweatpants, the perfect wine night is all about the company you keep.

Back in March, I was always itching to get out of the house and onto the town. Now, months later, I relish the nights when we relax at home. It took me a while to understand, but staying at home isn’t a punishment. It’s about comfort and making the best memories with your loved ones.

My Favorite Fall Motifs

September 30, 2020

My Favorite Fall Motifs

Fall, Motifs, Autumn

Blouse || Skirt || Heels (similar) || Handbag || Earrings

For those of you not familiar with the word, the motif has a few different meanings. For today’s chat, I’ll be using it as a “decorative design or pattern.” The fall is just the beginning of fun season motifs and themes. There are so many to choose from! In case you want to get in the spirit, here are some of my favorite fall motifs

Apples

The teacher in me will always love a good apple. While apples can even be enjoyed as far south as Florida, I’m so envious of my northern friends going apple picking. J Crew Factory has so many fun picks, but I especially love this crew neck sweater. If you live in cooler weather, please layer it over an Oxford shirt for me!

Pumpkins

There is nothing quite as synonymous with fall as pumpkins. From jack-o-lanterns to pie, it works in each autumn month and then some. While I typically wait to decorate with pumpkins until October 1st, this pumpkin brooch from Talbots is high on my shopping list. So elegant and timeless, I’ll be able to pair with a cream sweater for years to come!

Fall, Motifs, Autumn
Leaves

Don’t call it a cliche! Since the Sunshine State has a severe lack of fall foliage, Floridians have to find their autumn colors elsewhere. I was so hoping to visit David’s family in Vermont, but we opted that it would have to wait until next year. Instead, working from home in this embroidered ‘leaf-peeper’ sweatshirt from Kiel James Patrick will have to be the alternative.

Foxes

This final motif may just be my favorite one yet! This little critter has made its way into the autumn culture and in such a classic way! While this monogrammed sweater from Kiel James Patrick feels very me, this pearl bracelet would probably have to be my number one pick!

Fall, Motifs, Autumn

With all of that said, I have yet to mention Halloween specific pieces. Some are more obvious than others. If you’re like me and prefer something more subtle, I highly recommend this sweet pair of candy corn earrings from St. Armands Designs. They are lightweight and just what I needed to celebrate fall motifs.

Florida Fall Colors

Florida Fall Colors

Florida, Fall, Colors, state

Dress || Flats ($50 off with code SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE) || Clutch || Earrings

Florida does some things really well… Beach days, winter escapes, and outrageous news stories are two that come to mind. One thing that I wish we could improve on is Fall. Let’s face it, that’s pretty much nonexistent in the Sunshine State. While my friends in the North are sharing leaf-peeping and trips to apple orchards, I’m praying that the thermostat drops below 80. Since we don’t have the same autumn colors in my neck of the woods, here’s the Florida fall colors you can expect…

Green

What we lack in oranges and reds, we make up for with lots of green! It’s the added benefit of our trees never really shedding their leaves. We have beautiful foliage year-round and lots of shady spots to hide from the sun. I never tire of seeing stark green palm trees against a blue, cloudless Florida sky.

Garnet and Gold

Well, at least in my house! Others may say “blue and orange” or “green and gold,” and there’s really no right answer. Most Floridians absolutely love their college football. I’m no exception. Since Florida State isn’t having the best season, I don’t want to get into rankings or anything, but nearly every home will be tuned in to watch their college teams! It’s just another sign that fall has reached Florida.

Pink and Black

October is the official start to Stone Crab season in Florida. You can call it a regional delicacy, with festivals being celebrated from Miami to Clearwater. Growing up, no fall was complete with grabbing a bite to eat at Frenchy’s on Clearwater Beach. The epicenter, though, is definitely Joe’s Stone Crab restaurant on Miami Beach. This 100 plus year-old restaurant is enough for people to visit, alone.

Orange

In an attempt to feel seasonal, some Floridians start decorating for fall as soon as the Labor Day weekend is through. Pumpkins begin to take over our grocery stories and front porch decorations, but there’s one more way orange begins to show. Citrus fruit, which truly put Florida on the map, are starting to come into season and are my favorite ingredient for holiday festivities.

Florida, Fall, Colors, state

One could argue that Floridians do a lot of things differently. Why would the Fall season be any better? While we may not have the crisp air or season flavors, celebrating the slightly cooler weather is always a treat to look forward to.
