Fall Florals

Fall Florals

Fall Florals, J. Crew, fall, dress, New York City, Upper West Side, classic, floral

Dress (also) || Flats || Handbag (also) || Earrings || Watch

Today is a cold and blustery day in New York City. I feel like fall just got here, but it may sadly be on its way out already. I can’t believe it’s just October! If luck is on my side, winter will hold off for a few more weeks. I have a fun day trip planned for next weekend and I want to get a little leaf peeping in.

Florals are normally reserved for spring, but for whatever reason I’ve been really gravitating towards them. This is so out of character for me because it’s rare that I find a floral print that really speaks to me. When it comes to patterns, I normally lean towards stripes and ginghams. And they’re mostly navy.

This new floral obsession all started with this floral trapeze dress from J. Crew. The dress is extremely roomy, but still feminine with a high, ruffled collar. It originally came into my life through Rent the Runway. I borrowed it, fell in love, and had to make it my own. RTR has the option to buy an item straight away, but the dress is still available at J. Crew. As the days get cooler, I can even plan to style it for winter with warm tights and heeled Chelsea boots.

Worn with classic Chanel flats and a sweet Kate Spade handbag, I wore this dress for a date night in the Upper West Side. Although there are plenty of options to go to in my own neighborhood, the UWS feels like I’m in a different town. After all, it’s just one quick walk through Central Park away. Currently, our favorite spot has been Burke & Wills. It’s an Australian inspired bar with great cocktails and an even better happy hour.

Fall florals are such a good idea. Honestly, I can’t understand why I didn’t invest in them sooner. As long as you have colors that are dark or jewel tones, it’s really hard to go wrong. If worn just right, they can even turn into winter florals. How would wear them?

NYC Halloween: Annie Hall

NYC Halloween: Annie Hall

NYC, Halloween, Annie Hall, 1970s, Diane Keaton, tomboy, menswear, preppy

Shirt || Vest || Pants || Heels || Tie || Hat || Tote Bag || Sunglasses || Earring || Watch

I’m just having so much fun with my weekly NYC Halloween costumes. It almost makes me want to recreate icons more often. This week, I’m taking a page from 1970s Diane Keaton and her Oscar winning role in Annie Hall. When you look up NYC characters, she is one of the first people listed. I obviously already knew of Diane Keaton and her tomboy inspired style, but had never watched the movie. Taking the time to watch the movie was such a treat and should be on everyone’s list. To make your own Annie Hall costume, get ready to raid your man’s closet and your own.

Must Have: Oversized Button-Down

An oversized button-down is just part of the menswear uniform. They are comfy and don’t have to break the bank. You may already have this in your closet, but a quick run to the men’s department would do the trick.

Must Have: Menswear Vest

You could probably guess, this was an item that I had to borrow from David. Surprisingly, I love the look and have a mind to wear more often. If you need to grab your own, you can find a classic vest at almost any store that sells menswear.

Must Have: Crisp Khaki Pants

Classic khaki pants are a great staple in general and still add to the tomboy vibe. I’ve had these pants from J. Crew for years. It’s a great feeling to have Halloween costume pieces that are already part of your weekly rotation.

Must Have: Navy Necktie

This is another must have for a proper Annie Hall inspired look. Just ask Diane Keaton, “This tie was a present from Grammy Hall.” When picking out your tie make sure it’s a simple dark color, specifically navy or black.

Strongly Encouraged: Floppy Black Hat

I love how much character this black hat adds to the whole outfit. Although not entirely required, this is quintessential to an Annie Hall look. She’s actually been known to wear an oversized hat on many occasions. It’s just part of her daily uniform.

Strongly Encouraged: Oversized Tote Bag

Annie Hall is a girl on the go. She likes to stay active and will take advantage of a day trip at a moment’s notice. Carrying an oversized tote bag is perfect to keep all of her things.

Optional: Statement Sunglasses

This is completely optional, but I simply adore Annie Hall’s sunglasses through the movie. They are 70’s inspired and make quite a statement. Although it wasn’t a company back then, my Krewe sunglasses are a dead ringer for something you would find in the movie.

Optional: Vintage Tennis Racket

One of the first times we meet Annie Hall, she’s playing a leisurely game of tennis with Woody Allen. Although her tennis outfit is fashionable on its own, carrying a vintage tennis racket would be the perfect accessory to cap off an inspired outfit.

As far as NYC inspired Halloween costumes, this may be one of the easiest. Raid your boyfriend or husband’s closet for key pieces and you are all set. Whether you decide to go as Annie Hall or Diane Keaton, this will be a tomboy-chic outfit that you may want to wear everyday.

Back to Tweed Season

Back to Tweed

Back to Tweed Season, tweed, fall, LOFT, dress, suede boots,

Dress || Boots || Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet || Watch

My ideal closet is filled with sundresses and espadrilles to wear on a warm day. I’m a summer kind of girl, through and through, and there’s not much that can change that. Even though I’m sad to see summer over, there are a lot of perks to a new fall wardrobe. Namely, I get to reintroduce tweed into my normal rotation. It’s one of my favorite fabrics and is just right for cooler weather.

Last year, my first year in New York, was my first year really embracing the tweed. Originally posted here and here, I fell in love. It’s a versatile little fabric that can be dressed for almost any occasion. Work, church, date night, tweed has you completely covered.

Back to Tweed Season, tweed, fall, LOFT, dress, suede boots,

I may be biased, but no one does tweed better than LOFT. Every year they come out with beautiful new color combinations and materials. Last year, I decided to invest into two of their tweed skirts. Both were different shades of pinks that I was able to style into the spring. I still get compliments whenever I wear them.

Back to Tweed Season, tweed, fall, LOFT, dress, suede boots,

This season, I couldn’t live without this gorgeous tweed shift dress from LOFT. Pictures truly don’t do this little number justice. The colors are a beautiful combination of navy, turquoise, and white. The fringed hemline makes for such a fun detail. The best thing about this dress is that it can be styled for when the really cold weather hits. Slip on a pair of my fleece-lined tights or layer a turtleneck and I’ll be ready for anything… Almost!

This also seemed like the best time to breakout my new boots for the season. I’ve been searching for a perfect pair of suede knee-high boots probably since the summer. This pair from Sam Edelman checked off all of the boxes. Without having to break the bank, I finally found a pair of comfortable heeled boots that actually fit my athletic calves. I consider it to be a double win.

Whether it’s a pair of shoes or a dress, a change in season is always the best excuse to add a new piece to your closet. Although it doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul, don’t feel guilty in treating yourself. After all, what’s the worst thing that could happen?

Love from NYC,
Katie
