Art of the Scarf with Talbots

Art of the Scarf with Talbots

Whenever there’s an outfit I like, chances are I’ll love it if I add a scarf. Scarves are the simplest accessory that can add so much character to an otherwise basic outfit. Back in July, here, I spilled the beans on my favorite destinations to buy a scarf. Always at the top of the list is Talbots. Now, there’s an extra reason why.

Recently, Talbots has collaborated with six female artists and Susan G. Komen to create six individually beautiful scarves. No one needs a reminder that October is breast cancer awareness month. In the spirit of women helping women, 20% of the net proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen organization. I was so honored for the opportunity to work with Talbots on such an important cause.

This year, the name of the campaign is the Art of the Scarf. There is power behind what we wear and how you wear a scarf is just as unique as you are. Of the six scares available, I instantly fell in love with this beauty from Chicago artist, Martha Napier. A technicolor work of art, the women are meant to represent strength through friendship. Today, that is such an important, and often forgotten, message to remember.

Of course, the possibilities for how to wear this 41 inch square scarf are endless. The large size is functional without being too cumbersome. Whether you decide to wear it in your hair, on your bag, or around your neck, this scarf will work for you. With a scarf this size, I like to use it as an extra layer. On a breezy New York day, it can be just enough to keep me warm. Twisted and tied, it serves like a statement necklace, but the sky is the limit.

These scarves are such a unique and powerful item to have in your closet. They add so much life to any outfit and do good in the process. I highly suggest taking a look at all six scarves and decide for yourself which one best fits your personality. Which one is your favorite?

Embracing Manhattan Style

Embracing Manhattan Style

Embracing Manhattan Style, New York, fashion, inspiration, classic, black dress, style, Upper East Side

It should come as no surprise that I’ve notice a shift in my daily style since moving to New York City. It only makes sense since so many consider this city to be the fashion capital of the world. And let’s be honest, St. Pete isn’t known for its style. Each neighborhood in New York has its own identity and I just so happen to call the Upper East Side home. Nearly every designer you can think of has a boutique on Madison Avenue.

Living here, I couldn’t help, but pick up some style habits along the way. From the moms dropping the kids off at their elite private schools to the older women who are living their best lives, so many are dressed impeccable. One of my neighbors in particular comes to mind. Every time I see her, she is wearing a classic black dress, Chanel Flats, and is carrying one of several Hermes Kelly bags. This woman is my fashion hero!

Like so many in Manhattan, black is her ultimate color choice. Although I knew that before moving here, I didn’t think that was going to be my story. My Florida wardrobe was filled with all sorts of bright colors and lots of Lilly Pulitzer. I still have and cherish these pieces, but I find myself going to them more infrequently. Slowly, my closet has become more neutral and is predominantly black or navy.

Why this change, you may ask? Honestly, it’s just easier. New Yorkers already have so many options throughout an entire day. Should I take an Uber or subway? What’s the easiest line to take? Which of the thousand of restaurants should I try tonight? I’ve called it a ‘spoil of riches’ and it can be exhausting. Wearing black also helps with the inevitable grime that comes from being around million of other people.

Despite all of this, a lesson I’ve learned recently is how much character classic black pieces can have. Of course, you’ll find the simplest items with nothing much to them, but there’s so much more! Black is available in every fabric and texture imaginable. It can have all kinds of accents like feathers, embroidery, or buttons. This simple dress from H&M is easily brought to life with a small horse bit detail. Having a little bit of Gucci and Audrey Hepburn inspiration, I knew I had to have it. It’s feminine, well-cut and under $50. If you are a lover of classic style, I can’t recommend this dress enough!

The New York experience is all about making the city your own. That includes the style that goes with it. In my year living here, I’ve learned so much about my own style and have found enough inspiration to last a lifetime. Let the journey continue!

Katie

Basset Houndstooth

Basset Houndstooth

Basset Houndstooth, fall, classic print, ballet flats, Central Park, Old Navy, J. Crew

Jacket || Cami || Jeans || Ballet Flats || Handbag (rental) || Earrings

So a little backstory on this post. Houndstooth, while a classic pattern that is usually owned by Alabama fans, makes me think of my dog. Tripp’s a Basset Hound that I’ve had since college. His favorite spot to in my apartment was on an accent chair made of, you guessed it, houndstooth. One of his best puppy pictures is of him sitting on the chair. Houndstooth just seems to suit him.

Full disclosure, I was hoping Tripp would be a part of these pictures, wearing a houndstooth scarf. As it would so happen, my stubborn dog just wasn’t in the mood to be a prop. He must have something against being in front of a camera because he is an extremely unwilling participant.

Houndstooth doesn’t have to be reserved for my favorite pup. I’ve also been known to sport the classic print, especially in the fall. This jacket from Old Navy is one of my top picks. Oversized and cozy, it’s great to wear now as the temperature begins to drop and into the winter. On one of the cooler days last week, it was just the layer I needed to stroll through Central Park. Paired with a black cami, classic jeans, and ballet flats, it was an effortless outfit for a girl on the go.

Another great houndstooth find is this tunic dress from Anthropologie. This is just so great for fall! I actually ordered this dress, but found that it ran a little big. I’m thinking ordering down a size would make for a perfect fit. I’m always a fan of the ruffled hem detail. If I get my hands on it again, it’s just begging to be worn with opaque leggings, classic heels, and a fun felt beret.

One final houndstooth piece I’m loving comes from J. Crew. They have so many great houndstooth items and accessories, but this tweed dress really stood out. It’s a classic silhouette that would be perfect for the workplace. It’s also a great example that a proper houndstooth print can come in different colors and fabrics.

Originally worn by shepherds in the 1800s, houndstooth has been brought into the 21st century. Surprisingly versatile and found in everything from shoes to handbags, and everything in between, it’s a classic print to have in your closet. How would you style houndstooth?
