Gingham in Newport

Gingham in Newport

gingham, Newport, travel, New England, sweater, J. Crew, blue, navy, preppy, Rhode Island

Sweater || Pants || Heels || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet || Watch

I can’t believe that this is my final post from Rhode Island, but here we are! Among the nautical wharfs and colonial houses, wearing gingham in Newport seemed like such a good idea! Gingham is a print that I save almost exclusively for summer, especially in a light fabric. Still, I wanted to wear these printed pants from J. Crew one last time for the season.

While getting dressed one day, I was playing around with my new rollneck sweater from J. Crew. Since one of my goals for the seasons is to stock up on warm sweaters, this pick seemed like a no brainer. It’s a classic. I decided to size down for a more structured fit and am so glad I made that call. It has that oversized feel, but is still somewhat flattering and form-fitting. Since it comes in a whole rainbow of colors, I think I’ve found my new closet staple for the winter.

Anyways, I was playing dress-up in my closet, trying to think of different ways to style the sweater. When I stumbled upon my gingham pants, it seemed like a perfect pairing. I’m not exactly an expert on fall style, but something about this outfit said New England to me. With my navy Ferragamo heels and Tuckernuck clutch, I made a mental note. Our trip to Newport, to unveil this new outfit, couldn’t come soon enough!

When we finally got to town, we spent an entire morning walking through the historic district. The day started off crisp and I was happy to have been wearing such a warm sweater. Growing up in Florida, I’m definitely not used to seeing colonial architecture. Most of the houses we walked by have been around longer than Florida’s been a state. Even in the historic part of St. Pete, Old Northeast, the houses are only from the 1920s.

This particular house picture is one of my favorites. Located on Mary Street, it’s right in-between the Vanderbilt Hotel and the wharfs. As far as Newport is concerned, I think it’s an ideal location. A plaque on the house lets you know that it’s official called the Christopher Fowler House and has been around since 1801. It’s the color of this home that I love the most. Officially called Newport Blue, I think it’s my new favorite shade.

Gingham in Newport is always a good idea. Even though my trip to New England has long been over, I’m excited to keep styling for the fall weather and try to embrace living in the North.

Katie

Newport Cliff Walking

Newport Cliff Walking

Newport, Cliff Walk, travel, mansions, hike, Vanderbilt, Salve Regina, coast, Atlantic, Vineyard Vines

Oxford Shirt || Jeans || Canvas Sneakers || Pearl Earrings || Bracelet || Watch

One Newport experience that you simply can’t miss out on is the Cliff Walk. Although going on a walk doesn’t seem that exciting, this is is so much more than that. This 3.5 mile stretch of path outlines the town of Newport as it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Although the views of the water are simply stunning, the waterfront mansions are the stars of the show.

Back in the day, some of our country’s most prominent families flocked to Newport for a summer of peace and quiet. Ironically called “cottages”, these residences are anything but. Many of the mansions were owned by members of the Vanderbilt family. One of them was even converted into the local college, Salve Regina. I really hope those students can appreciate how beautiful their college home is.

There are several places to enter the pathway. Since our hotel was just down the road, we didn’t have to worry about parking. If you’re coming from farther away, even from the downtown area, I recommend parking in the First Beach parking lot. It’s right next to the entrance and is extremely convenient.

Since we had a lot planned for the day, we opted to only walk about halfway. David reminded me that we missed some of the largest, most visible mansions, but it also wasn’t going to be as walkable. We left at the next exit and walked back into town, down Bellevue Avenue. It turned out to be the best call because we walked right by Empire Coffee and was able to grab a quick breakfast after our morning hike.

As far as what to wear, for the most part, the Cliff Walk is extremely walkable. About two-thirds of the path is paved and what it isn’t is still large, flat boulders to walk on. I had no issue in my go-to Tretorn sneakers, but if they could handle hiking a mountain a Switzerland, I knew they weren’t going to be a problem. In hindsight, I kind of wish I would have worn a pair of chino shorts instead of jeans, even on a cool morning. As long as you feel comfortable, and don’t wear heels, then you should be okay!

This quick little blog post just isn’t doing the Newport Cliff Walk justice! Even though I took hundreds a photos on this one activity alone, none of them compare to seeing the views in person. With so much to love about Newport, this is just one more piece to the puzzle.

NYC Halloween: Holly Golightly

October 2, 2019

NYC Halloween: Holly Golightly

NYC, Halloween, Holly Golightly, Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, black gown, costume, New York, Fifth Avenue

Gown (similar) || Heels || Handbag (similar) || Sunglasses || Earrings || Bracelet

Optional: Opera Gloves || Pearl Necklace || White Scarf || Coffee Mug

Let me set the scene for you. Moon River is playing in the background. Fifth Avenue in New York is completely vacant on an early morning. A lone taxi cab pulls up to the flagship Tiffany’s store, where Audrey Hepburn emerges in a stunning black gown and opera gloves. This opening to Breakfast at Tiffany’s is simply iconic and so fun to recreate for myself. The view from the street has changed a lot since it was filmed in the 1960’s, but the opulence will always be there.

I don’t need a special occasion to feel inspired by Audrey, but Halloween definitely is a good excuse. As much as I love Halloween, I’ve never been one for obvious costumes. I find it so much more satisfying to pull what I already have in my closet to play dress-up. To show how easy it can be, I’m sharing ‘costumes’ from my closet, inspired by my favorite NYC characters. This week, I’m channeling none other than Holly Golightly, although completely different than last year. Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need to recreate this look.

NYC, Halloween, Holly Golightly, Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, black gown, costume, New York, Fifth Avenue
Must Have: Stunning Black Gown

The perfect Holly Golightly dress is going to come in many different forms. I personally think the best recreations are done with black, gown-length dresses. They are sleeveless and preferably backless. If you look in your closet and don’t have anything that quite matches, a classic black dress will still do the job. For my dress, I turned to Rent the Runway and couldn’t have been happier with this gown from Rochas.

Must Have: Classic Black Pumps

If you don’t have a pair of classic black pumps already, now is the time to do so. I wear mine at least once a week, no matter the season. Because they are one of the most versatile pair of shoes you can own, I believe you should splurge and go for a pair that is comfortable. After all, Holly Golightly was able to parade all around the city in her heels. I cannot recommend Sarah Flint enough for that very reason! They are the comfiest pair of heels I own and come in three different heel heights to fit your style. For $45 off your pair, use the code KATIE45.

Must Have: Oversized Black Sunglasses

Holly Golightly was known to wear her signature sunglasses at all times of the day. Rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, you can pull off the same look too. I’ve previously dubbed my black Karen Walker sunglasses my ‘Jackie Kennedy’ pair, but they would absolutely work for a Breakfast at Tiffany’s tribute.

Strongly Encouraged: Statement Pearl Necklace

Sadly, I completely forgot to wear my statement pearl necklace from J. Crew! Although I’m so happy with how my recreation turned out, having just a little more glitz would have helped me perfect this look. Even though I love a single string of pearls, try and find a necklace that is a little over the top. After all, what would Holly do?

Optional: Black Opera Gloves

I’ll be honest, I definitely don’t have a pair of opera gloves in my closet. Since the fun of this series is shopping what you already own, I decide to skip them. If you are a purest and want the closest costume you can find, this pair of opera gloves from Amazon is perfect and won’t break the bank.

Optional: New York Coffee & Croissant

A really distinct moment in the Breakfast at Tiffany’s opening is Holly taking a big bite of a croissant and a quick sip of coffee. We can assume she’s been out all night and the woman needs some sustenance. Although any to-go cup of coffee will do, you can grab a pack of the NYC version on Amazon. After Halloween, they can still help you daydream that you’re in the Big Apple.

Throughout the month of October, I’ll be recreating more iconic NYC female characters. I already have a few planned out in my head, but am always open to suggestions. When you think of New York, who are the top fictional characters that come to mind?

Love from NYC,
Katie
