My Fall Bucket List

My Fall Bucket List

My Fall Bucket List, NYC, autumn, Halloween, Central Park, Hudson River, Cold Spring, travel

Dress (also) || Heels || Handbag (similar) || Earrings || Bracelet

Welcome to October! Call me a traditionalist, but I don’t think the fall season truly starts until the 1st of October. In my mind, September still feels like summer and I try to hold off on autumn decor. With a new month, I’m finally ready for a new season. It may be my favorite in the city and I can’t wait to take full advantage of my new found free-time. Be sure to take a peek at my city bucket list.

Visit the Met Cloisters.

I’m hoping to check this off of my list this weekend. Found at the very top of Manhattan, the Cloisters is an extension of the MET. Part castle, part art museum, it also offers sweeping views of the Hudson River. The fall seems like the perfect time to explore and hopefully do some leaf peeping.

Enjoy the fall colors in Central Park.

Not to be outdone, Central Park has its own gorgeous display of fall leaves. Last year, the city had a freak snowstorm in the very beginning of November and I felt like the colors were gone all too soon. Since we live right next to the park, you can bet that I’ll make any excuse to visit over the next few months.

Spend Thanksgiving in New Orleans.

Already booked and I’m so ready to go. Better yet? My best friend, slash Maid-of-Honor, will be meeting me there too. You probably don’t need any remind that NOLA is my favorite city. I’ve been there for almost every major holiday, but this is my first Thanksgiving in town.

Stock up on new sweaters.

This Florida girl still isn’t prepared to dress for winter. I’ve been told countless times, mostly by my Vermonter husband, that we had a very mild winter last year. Since I’m just assuming that this one is going to be a real doozy, I’m panicking early and stock piling warm sweaters. So far, my top destinations have been Old Navy, J. Crew, and Vineyard Vines.

Take the ferry to Cold Spring.

Hopefully, I can cross this off my list sometime in October. From what I’ve heard, this is a must-do experience. Starting at the Wall Street pier, we’ll be enjoying a relaxing ferry ride, among the fall foliage, to Cold Spring. Up the Hudson River from the city, it just sounds like the perfect day trip away from the hustle and bustle.

Try a new pumpkin recipe.

I think I have a pretty good handle on a few key pumpkin recipes. In college, my chocolate chip pumpkin muffins were always highly requested by friends. Since I haven’t really added to my skillset in a while, I’m looking to find a new recipe to master and dazzle with at the holidays. Any suggestions are always appreciated.

Have a Halloween movie marathon.

Nothing too scary though. I’m actually a sucker for cheesy 80s horror movies, mostly because I’m seen them a dozen times. I’m also partial to Alfred Hitchcock, but who doesn’t love Hocus Pocus. This year, I’m planning on grabbing David, an extra large bowl of popcorn, and have an all-day movie marathon.

Take a family photo for the holidays.

Originally, I was thinking this would be nice for just David and I (plus Tripp). We failed to send out holiday cards last year and I don’t want to miss out again. Now I’m thinking, since the whole family will already be in New Orleans, it would be nice to include my parents and brother too.

Even though I’m finally ready to embrace fall, the weather report says it will be close to 90 degrees tomorrow. That’s just how it goes sometimes. The weather in New York is honestly just so unpredictable. I’ll still be looking forward to the cooler weather and checking off on my bucket list along the way.

Love from NYC,
Katie

Packing Guide: Newport

Packing Guide: Newport

Packing Guide: Newport, RI, fall, travel, trip, vineyard vines, navy, shirt dress, Tuckernuck, nordstrom

Grey Tee || Plaid Skirt || Navy Bow Heels || Earrings || Bracelet || Watch || Clutch

My mid-September trip to Newport was the perfect excuse to breakout some pieces from my fall wardrobe. The mornings were cool and the air was crisp. Being in New England, I wanted to bring some of my preppiest pieces and take in the nautical inspiration. If you are planning your own trip to Newport, here are some of the things that you should bring.

Navy Fisherman Sweater

Being on the waterfront, it can feel a little chilly in Newport, especially with the Atlantic Ocean breeze. A warm fisherman sweater is the top item to have in your suitcase. I love this pick from Vineyard Vines because of the shirt detailing. It’s a fun twist on a New England classic.

Crisp White Jeans

Even with all of the multi-million dollar mansions, Newport seems like a pretty laidback town. A simple pair of jeans can get you so far. This crisp white pair from Madewell matches with the nautical spirit of the city and can be dressed up or down.

Navy and Red Plaid Skirt

This skirt from Nordstrom might be my favorite piece of the season. The navy and red plaid print is delicate and a instant classic. Even though I loved it worn with grey, it would also look sharp with a white button-down shirt.

Grey Long-Sleeve Tee

Although this is just a simple grey t-shirt, it’s a power horse. I brought two of these Vineyard Vines tees for the trip. On day one, it was paired with white jeans. Day two, I wanted to make it a little more dressy with a structured skirt and my favorite heels.

Classic Navy Shift Dress

From head to toe, I love this classic navy shift dress. Originally styled in last week’s post, here, it’s a dead ringer for something Jackie Kennedy herself would wear. Since Newport is her hometown, it only seems fitting to dress the part.

Navy Low-Block Heels

This town is filled with cobblestone streets and hills. It’s important to wear a pair of shoes that are comfortable for the day. My navy Ferragamo Vara heels are some of my most worn and worked with every outfit I brought to Newport. They are dressy, but practical.

Patterned Silk Scarf

Nights can bring a quick drop in the temperature. I was so happy I brought a few scarves with me to quickly layer over my dresses and shirts. The colors on this pick from Tuckernuck are simply gorgeous and make for a great accent.

Brown Top-Handle Crossbody Bag

I’ve been borrowing a similar Loeffler Randall bag from the Rent the Runway, but I need to add this to my closet. Made by Neely and Chloe it’s a ladylike style that will always be classic and in style.

They say that NYC is the fashion capital of the world, but I was so inspired by Newport. With colonial and nautical details everywhere, visiting this town will feel like preppy lovers paradise.

Channeling Jacke in Newport

Channeling Jackie in Newport

Channeling Jackie in Newport, Kennedy, Hammersmith Farm, Honey Fitz, Rhode Island, preppy, Nordstrom, Talbots

Dress || Heels || Similar Scarf || Handbag (also) || Sunglasses || Watch || Bracelet || Earrings

Back in July, here, I did my very first rendition of ‘Channeling Jackie’. Although I thought it was just a topic for me to have fun with, I was surprised with how popular the blog post was. Even in this modern era, nearly 60 years since her time as First Lady, her style still resonates with young women all over the country.

Locations

Jackie, along with most of the Kennedy clan, had strong ties to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s a charming, colonial town on the Atlantic Ocean. It also seemed liked like the most obvious place to do my next round of ‘Channeling Jackie.’ She was born in Southampton and spent most of her childhood in Manhattan, Hammersmith Farm is considered to be her home. Hammersmith Farm, nestled with the other Newport mansions, was also the reception location for her first wedding in 1953. It was called the ‘Summer White House’ during his presidency.

As you visit Newport, you can’t help but find other spots that are part of Jackie’s life story. There’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church, that overlooks the town’s historic district, for their wedding ceremony. A few blocks away, you’ll also find the White Horse Tavern. It’s the oldest tavern in the country, established in 1673, and has become one of my personal favorites. According to rumor, this was one of Jackie’s favorite restaurants too. Her table of choice was in a tiny alcove, next to the bar on the second floor. If you eat here, be sure to ask for Table 40, her corner.

Jackie also shared John’s love for sailing and Narragansett Bay. There are many pictures of them relaxing together aboard Honey Fitz, the family’s yacht, or watching the America’s Cup race when it was hosted in Newport. Jackie would take almost any opportunity to revisit her childhood town with her family.

Fashion

When thinking about how to channel Jackie in Newport, I had no shortage of options. There was this all white ensemble that raises the question, “did Jackie actually invent athleisure?”  Jackie in this red shift dress, effortlessly balancing a camera and cigarette is almost quintessential preppy lifestyle. I ultimately decided to recreate this monochromatic navy blazer and dress combo. After all, navy is my signature color. The belted shift dress from Nordstorm’s 1901 collection is the perfect fit. So classic, and so Jackie!

Apart from all being aboard the Honey Fitz, what do all of these pictures have in common? In each, she is rocking her signature head scarf and oversized glasses. Recreating any Jackie inspiration is almost incomplete without them. Recently, I posted about my favorite place to buy my scarves. Talbots is still one of my favorites and just so happens to be the home to this pearl patterned beauty. The exact scarf is sold out, but they have a similar black option still available. My ‘Jackie O’ glasses come in the form of my black Karen Walker sunglasses. Although slightly different than her typical oversized favorites, I’d like to think that they would be her pick in the 21st century.

Obviously there is so much more to Newport than Kennedy family history. The food, the culture, and the history are all thing that will forever have me coming back. Also knowing that I’m wandering the same streets that Jackie once did only adds to appeal and is an experience that you shouldn’t miss.

Katie
