Falling for Newport with Vionic

Falling for Newport with Vionic

I just can’t believe that today is the first official day of fall! Summer is always my favorite season. There’s warm weather, I celebrate my birthday and anniversary, plus I have the most opportunities for travel. Although it’s sad to see summer leave us, I’m looking forward to the new season and all that comes with it. Now that I’m working on a freelancer schedule, I feel like I can really take it all in. Waking up to a crisp morning and wandering the city, with some leaf-peeping in Central Park sounds amazing.

I’m also hoping to take advantage of the season by planning some fun weekend trips. Last year, even though I really wanted to, we didn’t make it to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch. The big ticket item is taking a fall foliage cruise to Cold Spring, up the Hudson River from the city. David, being from Vermont, thinks it’s a little silly that those things are so high on my list. Look, Florida hardly shows any sign of fall. Last time I checked, it was still 90 degrees back home and that’s not exactly ideal for sweaters and apple cider.

If you are wanting a quick fall escape from the city, I cannot recommend Newport, Rhode Island enough! The town’s motif is much more nautical than foliage, but you’ll quickly fall in love. You can switch your apple cider for a cup of New England clam chowder to keep warm. Wander the charming downtown wharfs or hike the cliff walk for a healthy dose of ocean air.

Even though it was still technically summer, Newport felt every bit like fall. The mornings were cool and sunny, the perfect reason to break out some new sweaters. I had a cream fisherman style sweater from J. Crew that I wore and loved until it had to go into retirement. My new sweater from Vineyard Vines has made for the perfect replacement. It’s incredibly soft and the right amount of oversized.

Newport was also the time to debut my new booties for fall. Vionic was so kind to send me a pair of their Paloma wedges. I was blown away by the comfort level. This company strongly believes in foot health. They use biomedical technology to create a line of shows that you won’t mind wearing all day long. From the hilly cobblestoned streets of Newport to the avenues of Manhattan, these shoes will treat my feet right.

This ‘griege’ color is exactly what it sounds like. Part grey, part beige, it is extremely versatile to work with anything in your closet. The picture on their website makes it look more like a chocolate brown, but in person it seems much more muted.

Welcome back fall! I can’t wait to style for the season and take full advantage of some cooler weather. What are you the most excited for?

Katie

Visiting the Newport Boat Show

Visiting the Newport Boat Show

Visiting the Newport Boat Show, NIBS, New England, Rhode Island, AAA, nautical, travel, Vineyard Vines, Newport

Okay, my Newport sharing continues! Earlier in the week, here, I introduced my road trip to Newport, Rhode Island with AAA Northeast. The purpose of the trip was to take in all that the Newport Boat Show had to offer. Even though I grew up in Florida, and have been around boats my entire life, I’ve never owned a boat. If I’m being honest, I was nervous that going to this event was going to make me look like a fish out of water. Even if you have zero knowledge about boating, you will still feel welcome at this event.

Celebrating it’s 49th year, the boat show is as much a part of the town as the Cliff Walk and New England Clam Chowder. Serious boaters and daydreamers alike from around the Northeast flock to Newport to do some shopping and maybe leave with an incredible savings. Something I didn’t expect was how much space the event would take up. For the weekend, 13 acres along the downtown waterfront are dedicated to all things boat related. That includes hundreds of boats at all sizes and price points, nearly a dozen tents for nautical accessories, and several local food vendors.

Like I said before, David and I were not actually in the market for a boat, but it sure was fun to pretend! My favorite thing about the NIBS was getting to hop on the different vessels and “try them on”. We, I quickly learned, have slightly different tastes when it comes to boats. I’m partial to the classic look, wooden accents with navy trim, ala the Kennedys. David, on the other hand, wanted something that looked fast. At one point he admitted that he was going for the “Bond villain look.” Surprisingly, we found a middle ground and even a dock close to Manhattan to keep it. If we ever decide to take the plunge, we are ready on both fronts.

Everyone at the NIBS, both exhibitors and visitors, was so friendly. It was refreshing to be away from the city and talk with people who like the simpler things in life. That is, being on the water. Since St. Pete has a huge boating culture too, it reminded me a lot of home. It’s exactly what I needed after a summer of change. More importantly, it’s nice to know of a laidback town to escape to that’s just a quick train ride away. The whole trip can be done in under four hours from NYC.

Interested in attending the Newport Boat Show yourself? Well, the dates for 2020 have already been announced. On September 17th through the 20th, the party will start all over again. I would say to book your hotel as soon as you can. It’s a huge weekend for the town and hotel rooms will sell out quickly. You have so many hotel options in Newport, but we opted to stay a little farther away from the action. Our stay at the Newport Beach Hotel couldn’t have been more ideal. It was across the street from the beach and close to the iconic Cliff Walk. We decided to get our steps in and walk the 30 minutes into town, but a free shuttle service can get you there in 5.

The Newport Boat Show was a trip that I had been looking to all summer long. I knew I was going to have such a good time in this ocean front town, but I had no idea I was going to fall in love! Check back next week for more Newport content, including my city guide and packing list. See you soon!

I Didn’t Go to NYFW, and It’s Okay

I Didn’t Go to NYFW, and It’s Okay

I Didn't go to NYFW and it's okay, New York Fashion Week, style, blog, classic style, fall

Dress || Heels || Handbag || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

First off, I know that this blog post could come across as a little ‘sour grapes’. Girls all over the world pine and dream to come to New York Fashion Week. I’m absolutely one of those girls and attempted to reach out to different designers and PR companies for a shot at experiencing NYFW in person. Unfortunately, none of that panned out and I found myself on the sidelines.

With so many bloggers sharing their own NYFW experiences, it’s really easy for jealousy or envy to creep in. Designers seemed to have gone all out this year with such creative, once-in-a-lifetime events. Not to mention the fact that the fashion was incredible. I had to remind myself a few times that it’s okay to not be consumed by Fashion Week. Somedays, I even felt like staying away from social media was the right call since my entire feed was all about the shows.

The other side to the NYFW coin is all of the NYC content. I mean, it only makes sense, this city is where dreams are made and it needs to be shared. Having lived in New York for just over a year, some of pictures makes me laugh though. Girls walking amongst the cabs, snapping themselves crossing the street, or quickly stopping at every tourist site make for great Instagram pictures, but it’s not necessarily reality. It can lead to that envious feeling in the pit of your stomach, especially if you don’t live in the city. New York can absolutely be pristine and photoworthy, but trust me, it’s not always.

Now, let me step off of my soapbox and say how much inspiration can be found in NYFW, even from afar. The city’s most fashionable step out and share such daring styles on the way to shows. Designers, who have worked tirelessly, debut the fruits of their labor and create trends for seasons to come. Since high school, I would drink in pictures from the runway shows, even attempting some styles myself with my own teenage closet. At the end of the day, that’s what Fashion Week is about, finding inspiration and making it your own.

So, let me shout it from the rooftops. I’m a blogger, who didn’t go to NYFW, and that’s okay. It’s still on the top of my bucket list and I remind myself that there is always next year. I have so much room for both my Instagram and blog to grow, and can use Fashion Week in my goal strategies. At the same time, I won’t let not attending effect my love for what I do and how I run my brand. I won’t worry too much about the number of followers or likes I get because those things are fleeting.

Instead, it’s important to focus on what I can control. I can control creating high quality, interesting content that I’m proud of. Maybe, just maybe, my blog and that content will wind up on someone’s radar. The great thing about NYFW is that it happens twice a year. Until the next season, I will tirelessly work on my blog and growing my presence. Lord willing, maybe I’ll see you at a show in February.

Love from NYC,
Katie
