There are places that feel like summer distilled into one perfect setting, and the Basin Harbor Inn in Vergennes, Vermont, is one of those places. Tucked along the shores of Lake Champlain, this family-owned resort is the kind of destination that draws you in with its beauty and keeps you coming back with its charm. As the season winds down, there’s something especially memorable about a late-summer visit: warm afternoons on the water, crisp evenings by the fire, and that golden light that makes every corner feel cinematic. Our stay at the Basin Harbor Inn was a reminder of why Vermont remains one of my favorite escapes, and I couldn’t imagine a better way to close out the season.

History of the Inn
The Basin Harbor Inn is more than just a hotel, it’s a 130-year-old tradition. Founded in 1886 by the Beach family, it has remained family-run for five generations, making it one of Vermont’s most storied and enduring resorts. What started as a small lakeside retreat has grown into a beloved destination that still retains its heritage charm. Walking through the property, you can feel the history in the classic clapboard cottages, the vintage photos on the walls, and the way traditions (like lawn games and sunset cocktails) are seamlessly woven into the guest experience. Staying here feels a bit like stepping back in time, in the best way, while still enjoying the comfort and service of a modern luxury resort.

Location
Basin Harbor is located in Vergennes, Vermont, perched on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain with panoramic views of the Adirondack Mountains across the water. It’s just over an hour from Burlington, making it accessible yet tucked far enough away to feel like a true retreat. The setting is idyllic: 700 acres of rolling lawns, wildflower meadows, and wooded trails leading down to the shoreline. From nearly every vantage point, you’re greeted with sweeping views of the lake, and the sunsets are nothing short of spectacular. For travelers like us, who crave both relaxation and a sense of place, the Basin Harbor Inn offers the quintessential Vermont lake experience.

Activities
The beauty of Basin Harbor is that there’s truly something for everyone. Days can be as active or as leisurely as you like. On the water, you can kayak, paddleboard, or set sail on Lake Champlain. The resort also offers boat cruises, perfect for catching the sunset or learning more about the area’s natural history. On land, there’s an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, and endless walking and biking trails. For families, the kid’s camp is a highlight, while couples will appreciate the peaceful Adirondack chairs dotting the shoreline. We loved the simple pleasures most, lounging on the dock, watching boats drift by, and taking in that feeling of stillness that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Dining
One of the best parts of the Basin Harbor Inn is how dining here feels so connected to the lake itself. Each evening, we found ourselves drawn to the North Dock Dinners, where long communal tables are set up by the water and meals are served family-style with the sun setting over the Adirondacks. It’s casual but thoughtful, great food paired with that unbeatable lakeside backdrop. During the day, we loved the food trucks parked lakeside, a fun and relaxed option for grabbing something quick without ever having to change out of a swimsuit. Everything tasted better eaten on the dock or carried down to the lawn. And of course, no Vermont trip is complete without a Creemee, which we picked up from the little market on property. Creamy, sweet, and perfectly nostalgic, it was the treat we looked forward to after long afternoons in the sun.

Our end-of-summer getaway to the Basin Harbor Inn was everything I hoped it would be: restorative, charming, and deeply memorable. The combination of history, setting, and hospitality makes this resort feel truly one-of-a-kind. It’s a place where traditions matter, where the pace slows, and where the beauty of Vermont takes center stage. As we packed up to leave, I couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic, already planning a return. Because Basin Harbor isn’t just a summer destination, it’s the kind of place that becomes part of your story, season after season.
Love from Vermont,
Katie
