My Florida Bucket List

My Florida Bucket List

Bucket List, Florida, Travel, Resort, Staud

Tee || Skirt || Wedges || Clutch || Sunglasses || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

Apart from my short stint in NYC, I have lived in Florida my entire life. I am happy to call myself a local Floridian and know how lucky I am to have grown up here. The Sunshine State truly has so much to offer. People instantly think of the beaches and amusement park, but we are so much more than tourist spots. Since being away from home, I learned how much of Florida I have yet to see. Now that I’m back, my goal for the upcoming year is to get out and explore. Although this list could be a mile long, here are the top ten things on my Florida bucket list.

Swim With The Manatees

This goal stems back to my childhood. Manatees are my favorite animal. They are friendly, gentle, slow-moving sea cows that love to spend their winter vacations in Florida springs. While they can be found all around the state, their favorite hangout is Crystal River. It’s a small town, about 90 miles north of St. Pete, but manatees are their business! Here, you can book a tour and take a swim with the manatees. Of all the things on my list, this is the one I want to check off this year.

Take A Tour Of The Everglades

While we’re on the topic of outdoor pursuits, I have to mention the Everglades. It spans the entire width of the state at the southern tip and is diverse ecosystem only found in Florida. While an airboat tour is an option, it is often gimmicky to entertain the tourists. A quieter alternative, and much more up my alley, is to take a guided kayak tour. Visiting historic Everglades City is also part of the bucket list trip.

Get Lost In The Sunken Gardens

This is right in my backyard and there’s simply no excuse as to why I haven’t been yet. Just a few blocks away from me in St. Pete is the oldest museum in town, over 100 years old. Back in the day, it was one of the biggest roadside attractions in the area. Here, you can see natural Florida at its best with gorgeous flora and a happy family of resident flamingos. If you plan on making a trip to St. Pete, make this a destination.

Eat Key Lime Pie In Key West

I think people don’t quite realize how big Florida actually is. While it is narrow, the drive from Pensacola to Key West will take you well over 12 hours. For some perspective, that’s about the same amount of time it would take you to drive the length of California. That being said, I’ve yet to ever go to the Keys and I know I’m missing out. While I want to bar hop and pay my respects to the great Ernest Hemingway, my number one priority is to eat a slice of fresh key lime pie. This dessert is a Florida must and a personal favorite.

Bucket List, Florida, Travel, Resort, Staud
Spend A Long Weekend On Miami

I was kidding when I said there was so much in Florida that I haven’t experienced. One of those places is Miami. Floridians joke that it’s practically another state compared to the rest of Florida, but still part of our identity. Even in Tampa Bay, Cuban culture is weaved into who we are and that all started in Miami’s Little Havana. I may need to brush up on my Spanish skills, but strolling by the Art Deco hotels and never ending night life sounds like a fun way to spend a long weekend.

Take A Day Trip to Cedar Key

Florida, especially along the coast, has so many small towns that are dripping in southern charm and off the beaten path. For me, the first town that comes to mind is Cedar Key, here on the Gulf Coast. The pace will feel slower, the seafood will be world class, and it’s a great opportunity to disconnect from the rest of the world for a few hours. After Saint Augustine, it’s actually Florida’s second oldest town, so you 100% know how rich the history will be here.

Revisit Apalachicola And The Forgotten Coast

Just a quick scenic drive from Florida State University, I would often take a road trip down the Forgotten Coast to Apalachicola to enjoy the day. Sadly, I haven’t been back since and it calls my name. Again, this is another small southern town, but with a completely unique feeling. This stretch of Florida is called the forgotten for some pretty obvious reasons. While cities like Tallahassee and Panama City grew for tourists, the towns in this part of the state are still quiet and free of tacky tourist shops.

Visit Brooke On 30A

I fell in love with picturesque 30A a few summers ago while visiting my dear friend Brooke. The towns that make up this stretch of Gulf Coast highway are prime examples of southern living at its best. It’s called the Emerald Coast for a reason. Impossibly colorful waters and pristine white sand beaches is the perfect destination for a laidback summer day. Whether you choose charming Seaside or immaculate Alys Beach, you can’t go wrong.

Bucket List, Florida, Travel, Resort, Staud
Take David To Disney World

Florida childhoods are defined by trips to Disney World. It has been years since I visited the Happiest Place on Earth, but I want to bring David along for the ride. I’m ready to experience an entire day of nostalgia and relive cherished memories. I know I said Florida is so much more beside theme parks. Sometimes, though, you need to appreciate what really put my home state on the map.

Stay At Some Bucket List Hotels

Since Florida history is almost entirely rooted in escaping the cold winter weather, some simply impeccable resorts have been built in the process. I have a specific bucket list of just hotels in the state I want to visit (or revisit). Right now they include the Gasparilla Beach Club in Boca Grande, the Fountainbleau on Miami Beach (you may have seen recently on Mrs. Maisel), The Colony in Palm Beach, and the Don Caesar right here in St. Pete Beach.

Bucket List, Florida, Travel, Resort, Staud

If you couldn’t tell, the eternal Floridian in me is beyond thrilled to be home. Whatever you think you know about the Sunshine State can go be thrown out the window because what you’ll find is a so unexpected. Join me on my bucket list and if you have any suggestions, be sure to let me know!

Katie

2020 Resort Shopping Guide

2020 Resort Shopping Guide

Resort, Shopping, Guide, resort shopping, shopping guide, tuckernuck

Coverup || Sandals (Similar) || Similar Tote Bag || Sunglasses || Earrings Bracelet

I am becoming spoiled rotten with this amazing Florida weather. Except for the quick cold snap we had earlier this week, every day feels like a vacation. Dressing the part is even sweeter. My closet is merging into a rainbow of colors. Since Spring Break feels like it’s just around the corner, I rounded up my favorite pieces to get you ready for your next warm escape, no matter where it takes you. Consider this your unofficial 2020 resort shopping guide.

A Rattan Tote That Holds Everything

The first thing I grab to get ready for a beach vacation is my oversized rattan tote bag. It makes for a surprisingly great carry on and holds whatever you need. About this time last year, I brought mine on our trip to Bermuda. From wandering around the resort to scootering to another part of the island, it was incredibly practical.

A Breezy Linen Coverup

Buying a coverup that you love is always a fun find. Having the coverup double as a dress is just an added bonus. Although I’m not normally a ‘pink’ girl, and I consider blue to be my color, I fell in love with this coverup from Tuckernuck. The linen material is lightweight and breezy, PLUS the coverup has pockets!

Comfy Brown Leather Sandals

While my Hermes sandals are a bit of a splurge, I’ve found the perfect alternative with these sandals from Margaux. I swear they got with just about everything which is perfect if you’re carryon is light on space.

Some Neutral Statement Earrings

To dress up a laidback dress of coverup, all you have to do is add a pair of neutral colored statement earrings. These earrings from Tuckernuck are relatively simple, but still are just enough bauble. Another great alternative, at about the same price point, is this straw pair from Shashi. Both are under $50, light, and would look so good on you.

Tortoise Sunglasses That Go With Everything

I am a huge believer in eye health. Whether it’s in my car, at the beach, or walking around the neighborhood, I have at least one pair on hand. While I love a pair of designer shades, the beach calls for a more budget friendly choice. This pair from Le Spec is a happy medium, but just as stylish.

A Swimsuit For Any Occasion

The older I get, the more I appreciate a cute one-piece suit. It takes all of the ‘body’ questions away when it comes to picking a swimsuit. One-pieces don’t have to look dowdy anymore. This navy swimsuit with the rickrack details is a prime example. J. Crew is always my first destination for swim wear. They never disappoint!

A Dress For A Night Out

A trip to paradise isn’t all beach days. You may even decide to treat yourself to some fine dining. If that’s the case, have a dressier outfit on hand is an absolutely must! I have been drooling over everything in Staud’s latest collection, but this turquoise maxi dress may just take the cake. The color is simply gorgeous and would look great with a fresh tan.

A Simple Clutch For Dressier Looks

I seriously can’t get enough of my bamboo clutch from Cult Gaia. Even though they spiked in popularity a few years ago, it’s still one of my most cherished bags. Every time I bring it out, I am showered with compliments guaranteed! Although an untraditional shape, it still fits my keys, wallet, phone… pretty much everything!

Resort, Shopping, Guide, resort shopping, shopping guide, tuckernuck

Dressing for the beach, or anywhere sunny, is always my favorite. Not to toot my own horn, but I think I have it down pat. If you ever need any guidance on what to pack for your next vacation, send me a little note. I would be so happy to help!

I Got a New Car!

I Got a New Car!

Car, Volkswagen, Safety Features, Emerald Green, Tuckernuck

Tee || Jeans || Heels || Scarf || Handbag || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

I got a new car! With moving away from NYC, it was time to say goodbye to taking the subway and hello to finding a new car to match our life. Since David and I both got rid of our cars prior to the move, we were back at square one for transportation. Although it was an overwhelming task, it also gave us an opportunity to start from scratch and find the cars that matched our needs. Since car buying can be a lot, here are the top picks I was looking at, plus the pros and cons for each.

Car, Volkswagen, Safety Features, Emerald Green, Tuckernuck
Volvo XC60
  • Pros: This was my top choice. What can I say, I love the Swedish design and engineering. When you buy a Volvo, you’re buying quality and safety. Considering the fact that this will be a future family car, it’s something that was deeply part of decision making.
  • Cons: This is a luxury car and the price tag for the Volvo XC60 was the steepest of them all. As we prepared for our move back to Florida, we had a lot of expenses to cover: a moving truck, getting a new apartment, and getting a second car for David. It just wouldn’t have been a smart choice to add a bigger car payment to the list.
Subaru Forester
  • Pros: When I went to the Subaru dealership, I was so blown away by the safety features that come standard with any Subaru. With a Subaru, you’re also buying into one of the highest rated cars by consumers. Subaru customers absolutely love their cars.
  • Cons: I was so impressed by the Forester, I was ready to walk away with a new Subaru after just one visit. The problem with that, they wouldn’t have any available until January. Since we moved in November, going two months without a car just wasn’t going to work for us. I guess it wasn’t meant be.
Car, Volkswagen, Safety Features, Emerald Green, Tuckernuck
Volkswagen Atlas
  • Pros: The newest model from Volkswagen has everything that you would possibly need for space. With a third row and lots of cargo room, this will hold everything. This car is also identical to the Audi Q5. You can have all of the luxury without the high monthly payment.
  • Cons: Even though my old car was a 4-Door Jeep Wrangler, I thought the Atlas seemed way too big. Also, the bucket seats design in the second row wasn’t going to be a good fit for when we need to take our dog around town. It’s an amazing car, but just way more than what I needed.
Volkswagen Tiguan
  • Pros: The Tiguan seems to be the best of all the worlds. I get a compromise on size from the Atlas, all of the safety features I was looking for in the Forester, and a much friendlier price tag than the XC60. Because I was offered a great deal on the SEL, I also get to enjoy the most high tech bells and whistles.
  • Cons: Honestly, I don’t there are any! At first, we weren’t sure if the color I wanted, this beautiful emerald green, would be available. The dealership was so accommodating and got me the car of my dreams.

With so many midsize SUVs out there, it can be hard to sift through and find the best choice for you. While I am by no means a car expert, I leave that title for David, sometimes it’s helpful to get an outside perspective.
