Museum Hopping in NYC

New York, NYC, museum, culture, art

Obviously, living in New York City has its perks! While I don’t have time to go through every single one today, I want to cover one of my absolute favorites! I have a serious love for museums. Just ask anyone I’ve ever traveled with. I will take any excuse to visit the local museum. I believe it’s a quick and super effective way to learn about the culture of a city. David and I even had our wedding reception at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete. There are so many museums to cover in NYC. Here are some of my favorites just in case you want to do some museum hopping.

Museum of the City of New York (103rd Street and 5th Avenue)

If you want to learn about the history of the city in one swoop, this is where you should start. It starts with the very beginning of New York, spanning over 400 years. They also have exhibits that show the nuances of New York culture. Right now, that includes a traveling exhibit on 1960s Mad Men and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.

Cooper Hewitt Museum (90th Street and 5th Avenue)

Even though it’s Washington DC that is known for their Smithsonian museums, you’ll still find one in NYC. This particular museum is dedicated to architecture and design. Their exhibits cover influences from all over the world. I can’t until the spring when a Lilly Pulitzer exhibit arrives.

Guggenheim Museum (88th Street and 5th Avenue)

The building alone is worth a visit. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opening in 1959, it’s one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Inside, you’ll see an awe-inspiring design filled with modern art from all over the world.

Neue Galerie (86th Street and 5th Avenue)

Since this slice of the Upper East Side was once considered the German neighborhood, it’s only fitting for there to be a German art museum. The crown jewel of their collection is the Woman in Gold, by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.

Metropolitan Museum of Art (82nd Street and 5th Avenue)

This museum is my all-time favorite, happy place, and first one I visited when I was still interviewing for jobs. Covering 2.2 million square feet and over 2 million pieces in their collection, it will take several visits to take in everything. Most notably, it’s also the venue for the annual MET Gala.

Museum of Natural History (81st Street and Central Park West)

If you’re traveling with kids to NYC, this should be at the top of your list. It inspired the fun movie series Night at the Museum and always ignites my imaginations when I visit. I suggest starting at the top floor and working your way down. That’s where you’ll find dinosaurs fossils and even a wholly mammoth.

Museum of Modern Art (West 53rd Street and 6th Avenue)

I had the pleasure of visiting the MOMA last weekend. Previously, it have been closed for renovations and finally reopened last month. Again, start at the top floor and work your way down. You’ll find some of your favorite pieces by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet. Finally seeing Van Gogh’s Starry Night in person was such an amazing moment for the art lover in me.

National September 11th Memorial and Museum (Greenwich Street and Fulton)

When one of my friends came to visit a few months ago, this was her number one request. Visiting this hallowed ground is extremely emotional experience, but is crucial to understanding the city. When talking with New Yorkers who here lived on that infamous day, you quickly learn that it’s something that almost always lingers in the city. Again, this is a must visit!

New York, NYC, museum, culture, art

I feel like I’m barely scratching the surface here. Museums are just as much a part of New York as the food or sports culture. It’s a quintessential NYC experience that you can’t miss out on. Which one is your favorite?

Katie

Menswear Inspired

Recently, one of my guilty pleasures has been to stop by the Ralph’s Coffee in the Upper East Side. Tucked away at the Ralph Lauren women’s store, I think it’s the perfect setting for getting work done. I bring my laptop, order a coffee (black) with a scone, and I’m in the zone. There’s great music playing and I’m sitting with so much fashion inspiration. One of my neighbors lovingly describes it as an ‘upscale Starbucks’.

Right now, Ralph Lauren is featuring pieces from their most recent New York Fashion Week show. It was a very classy affair and was full of vintage glamour with menswear inspired pieces. I love the thought of styling tuxedos for women or pairing the pieces with opulent ballgown skirts. While that’s not exactly a practical look for everyday, I’ve decided to take on my own menswear look with an oversized ‘boyfriend’ blazer.

I have very broad shoulders. With that, all I can say is ‘thank you 15 years of swimming’. It’s tricky for me to find a blazer that fits well. As much as I would love to chicly drape one over my shoulders, I end up looking like a linebacker. I have found that the boyfriend cut has extra room for me and is very forgiving. J. Crew’s rendition may be my favorite. I simply loved this glen plaid pick. The yellow accent was such a fun accent and is just my style.

Wanting to keep the rest of the outfit casual, I added some of my favorite closet staples. For a date night, my black silk cami from J. Crew is almost always the first thing I grab. It’s the perfect layering piece and goes with everything. Comfy jeans and black ballet flats are simply made for running around the city. When it comes to styling a boyfriend blazers, I like to keep things simple and classic.

I’m always touting that fashion inspiration is everywhere, especially in New York City. Always keep your eyes open because you never know when something will spark with you. Yes, that’s even true at your favorite coffee shop.

Katie

50 Days From Christmas

50 Days From Christmas

Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday and I want to give it the attention that it deserves. You may have noticed that Christmas gift guides are starting to flood your social media. I definitely have. Even though it’s very tempting, I don’t want to stress about all of the Christmas content until closer to December. With all of that said though, I want to give readers what they want to see and I know that Christmas is already heavy on a lot people’s minds.

Christmas is only 50 days away! David and I have our travel plans to Vermont booked, but that’s pretty much the only thing I’m ready for. My gift shopping won’t happen until after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is when I do most of my heavy lifting. I am looking forward to all of the holiday dressing though. My shopping cart is full of cheerful reds and festive plaids, in almost obscene levels. I cannot wait for all of the holiday invites to start rolling in so I can dress as merry as I feel.

A few brands have become my front-runner when it comes to shopping for the season. Each year, I impatiently anticipate their holiday new arrivals because they have pretty much perfected them! Some are classic, some are more kitschy, but they are just right for Christmas. Let’s take a look at my top three shopping destinations and favorite pieces…

Vineyard Vines:

Not to seem impatient, but I actually walked into the Vineyard Vines store at Grand Central Station to ask them when they would be releasing their holiday collection. That was still in October and I have no shame! Little did I know, I only had to wait a few days more. I have gift card that is burning a whole in my pocket, but I’ve been saving it for this very reason.

J. Crew

If I had to pick a number one favorite, it may have to be J. Crew. It makes up a good bulk of my wardrobe. They also have so many unique pieces and styles for the holiday season. Classic plaids? They have it. Romantic laces? They have that too. They even have all kinds of shimmery numbers if you have a more glam affair to attend.

Draper James:

Reese Witherspoon, you have done it again! This is a relatively new member to my holiday shopping list. Earlier this week, they unleashed their holiday collection and I instantly swooned. When it comes to Christmas, I’m really partial to plaids and Draper James has so much to offer. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of their new dresses for the season.

Honorable mentions would go to Talbots, J. Crew Factory, H&M, and Tuckernuck. No matter your price point, the holidays are such a fantastic time to dress to the nines and look your merriest. After all, no one looks bad in Christmas cheer!
