NYC Halloween

NYC Halloween

Halloween, NYC, Orange, Black, Happy, Holiday, Classic

Happy Halloween everyone! If there’s a major city to celebrate the holiday in, it’s probably New York City. Some of the biggest parties in the country have been held over last weekend and into Sunday. All of the townhomes in the Upper East Side are decorated to perfection. The only thing that’s not on our side is the constant rain we’ve had for the past few days. At least we’re not getting snow like our friends in the Midwest.

In a few hours, Trick or Treaters will be stopping by. Because of the weather, and the fact that we’re in an apartment building, I’m expecting more kiddos than last year. Being a teacher, I love how excited kids get for the holiday. I love seeing their little costumes and am definitely over generous when it comes to giving out candy. Even though I already have our candy bowl all ready to go, I’m still tempted to run and grab full-size bars. Yes, I want to be that person!

As far as the rest of our Halloween plans go, we’ve decided for a quiet one this year. We both have a costume set aside (have you seen my Mrs. Maisel), just in case we decide to change our minds last minute. I’m looking forward to relaxing on the couch, munching on popcorn, and watching some scary movies. I learned this year that David and I have opposite tests when it comes to horror movies, but it’s all about compromise.

Halloween, NYC, Orange, Black, Happy, Holiday, Classic

Just because I’m not wearing a costume today doesn’t mean I still can’t dress the part. Last week, I shared my idea of a classic Halloween style. Since it was so highly received, I decided to go for a round two. Black and orange is just about as Halloween as you can get. Pairing a black button-down with bright orange pants is a perfect way to dress for the holiday, even if you have to go to the office.

Love from NYC,
Katie

NYC Halloween: Mrs. Maisel

NYC Halloween: Mrs. Maisel

NYC, Halloween, costume, Mrs. Maisel, 50's, pillbox, classic, Gal Meets Glam, J. Crew

Coat || Dress (also) || Heels || Handbag || Pillbox Hat || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has taken the country by storm and I’m just along for the ride. This is one of my favorite shows right now, and I’m so excited for Season 3, coming out December 6th. The wardrobe alone is enough to make you fall in love. Living in New York, I think I have a deeper appreciation for the show than I would if I was still in Florida. Watching the show and actually being able to recognize locations is so fun! Since she is the most current NYC character, I couldn’t help, but recreate one of her most iconic looks for my final Halloween costume. I’m saving the best for last!

Must Have: Ladylike Coat

Truly, the color of the coat doesn’t matter. When it comes to emulating late 50’s style, it’s the silhouette that you need to look at. This ladylike day coat from J. Crew is absolute perfect! The knee length and belted design looks like it’s straight out of the yesteryears. A bubblegum pink color is not one I normally gravitate towards, but was exactly what a Mrs. Maisel costume needed.

Must Have: Contrasting Midi-Dress

Whatever color you choose for your coat, it’s important to pick a contrasting color that still compliments. For a bright pink, that means a deep maroon would do the trick. Keeping on trend with the 50’s, a midi-length dress would be the best pick. So many dresses from Julia Engel’s Gal Meets Glam collection, especially this one, fall under that category. They are feminine, modest, and chic. I have a feeling Midge Maisel would love all of them.

Must Have: Matching Pill-Box Hat

Pillbox hats were all the rage in the 50’s and 60’s, but also one of Midge’s favorite accessories. While you may not have one in your closet, Amazon is your friend! I snagged this pillbox hat, that perfectly matched my dress for around $15. If you order today, you’ll have it in time for this weekend’s Halloween party. They come in all kinds of styles and a rainbow of colors. A part of me really hopes they come back in style!

Must Have: Neutral Color Heels

As tempting as it is, don’t overthink the shoes. Whatever neutral color, pointed-toe heel you have in your wardrobe will be perfect for the job. These taupe pumps from Sarah Flint are versatile and so comfortable. Since I’m recreating my favorite NYC female characters, it’s only fitting that I rock a New York created company. For $45 off of your next pair of Sarah Flint shoes, use the code KATIE45.

Must Have: Classic Handbag

Now, the real Mrs. Maisel would have her handbag perfectly match the rest of her accessories. To be honest, I’m nowhere near being on that level. In the meantime, this handbag from Neely and Chloe is equal parts ladylike and functional. It’s a great choice for running around Manhattan. I consider it Mrs. Maisel approved!

Optional: Matching Hand Gloves

In the show, Midge rounds out a pink and burgundy ensemble with matching (of course) leather gloves. Much like the pillbox hats, wearing gloves when you’re out on the town was extremely popular in the 50s and early 60s. The only gloves I have in my close are for the winter, but this pair from Amazon is the right color. For under $25, they’re even tech friendly.

If you haven’t yet, you absolute must start watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It has everything I look for in a TV show. It’s funny, great characters, and a touch of drama. Be sure to binge seasons 1 and 2 before December 6th to be all caught up for season 3. With such an amazing wardrobe selection, there’s stye inspiration in almost every scene. Which is your favorite?

Katie

Day Trip to Cold Spring

Day Trip to Cold Spring

day trip, Cold Spring, Hudson River, fall, New York, Draper James

Plaid Coat (also) || Button-Down Shirt || Jeans || Heels || Handbag || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

Even without a car, taking a day trip away from New York City is the easiest thing. Last weekend, David and I were feeling a little restless. More importantly, we didn’t want to miss out on the fall foliage. We could have opted to stay and see the colors in Central Park, but a quick day trip away seemed like a great idea. Cold Spring was our destination.

How To Get There:

  • By Train: It all starts at Grand Central Station. Taking the Metro-North Railroad, towards Poughkeepsie, you’ll be dropped off right by downtown Cold Spring in just over an hour. Since we’re in the Upper East Side, we grabbed the train at the 125th Station, but the route is still the same. When it comes to the weekend, spending $30 to see a new town is a bargain!
  • By Water: During the fall, there is also an option to take the ferry. For $80 roundtrip, you can enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Hudson River. Try to keep in mind when the fall colors are at their peak and you’ll have the best view in the house.

Where to Eat:

  • Hudson Hil’s Cafe: This was our breakfast stop while in town and really felt like the place to be. There was a line out the door of hungry New Yorkers ready for a good meal. The food was simple, but cooked to perfection. I loved my Fig and Prosciutto eggs. It’s a combination I can’t wait to recreate at home.
  • Cold Spring Cheese Shop: Cheese boards have become my love language. Nothing seems better after exploring on a fall day than sharing cheese and charcuterie with a glass fo wine.
  • Le Bouchon: Who would think to expect a French bistro in a small New York village? Their menu took me right back to Paris. Painted in a beautiful set of primary colors, this restaurant is hard to miss on the Main Street.

Where to Sip:

  • The Pantry: I can never visit a new town or city and not go to a local coffee shop. The Pantry had some delicious brews, but also shared their space with Cold Spring Apothecary. The candles and lotions would make for a nice little souvenir of your day trip.
  • Barber and Brew: David was such a huge fan of this concept. Stop by to get your haircut and enjoy a local (Hudson River Valley) craft beer along the way. When we peaked inside, we say a full tap room in the back of the barber shop. Such a good idea!

What to Do:

  • Wander along the Hudson River: Even though this town has so much charm, the Hudson River is the star of the show. I loved grabbing our coffee and simply relaxing on a park bench by the river.
  • Shop Local: Cold Spring was just full of boutiques that blew me away. There’s a little something for everyone. David instantly gravitated towards Old Soul. They sell outdoorsy gear and smelled like a campfire. That is pretty much David in a nut shell. I loved the General Store and I promise, it’s not quite as it sounds. They sell a collection of local groceries and home goods so you can bring Cold Spring home with you.
  • Go for a Hike: Most of the people on our train ride up were definitely on their way to hike. Breakneck Ridge is just north of town and is scheduled to be about a 3 hour hike. Either take a cab from downtown Cold Spring, or stay on the Metro North for one more stop. The outdoorsy folks will find the best views of the Hudson River.

What to Wear:

When we landed in Cold Spring, it was the perfect fall day! The sun was out, but there’s a crisp chill to the air. We were only 45 miles north of the city, but it seemed like a world away with good fresh air. To stay cozy and warm, I opted to wear this cute plaid swing jacket from Draper James. Since it’s a pretty casual town, jeans and comfy shoes will be your friend.

Even though our trip only lasted a few hours, it was just the escape that I needed. Cold Spring is the most darling little town that deserves to be explored. If you are a New Yorker looking for a day trip, Cold Spring should be your destination.

Katie
