Classic Halloween Style

Classic Halloween Style

Are you wanting to get in the Halloween spirit without being in a full blown costume? I feel that. Although I always admire the work that others put into their costumes, I like mine to be minimum effort. Last year I dressed up like Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s by wearing what I already owned (and one tiny Amazon order).

This year, I’ve raised my own Halloween bar by channeling a different iconic NYC character each week. They all require no makeup and just a few things that you may already have. More importantly, you won’t be embarrassed to wear these outfits in the light of day.

If you want a festive outfit with just the most subtle dash of spirit, I think I may have found the answer. I’m calling it a ‘classic Halloween style.’ A basic sweater and jeans has pretty much been my fall staple. Turn that sweater into the brightest shade of pumpkin orange you can find. You’ll be ready for whatever spirited event gets thrown your way.

This sweater from Lands Ends seemed like the perfect choice. For just under $60, and they always have discounts, the color was spot on! I loved the cable knit detail for an ultra cozy feel.

We can’t talk about spirit without mentioning ghosts. Don’t worry, these one are completely harmless. The words ‘ghost earrings‘ might not do anything for you on their own. Make them out of pearls and they make for a classy way to dress for the holiday. I was shocked to find how lightweight they actually were. Buy them now and keep them for years to come. Honestly, they are too cute to pass up.

When it comes to accessories for Halloween, I suggest keeping them black. From there, you have a whole world of possibilities. Wanting to maintain a classic look, I decided to add my black Chanel flats. By themselves, they are definitely not Halloween worthy. Add them with my bright orange sweater and it seems like they seem like the most natural pairing. This black crossbody from Ralph Lauren, while small, has just enough space to hold the essentials on Halloween night.

Now that you have the perfect Halloween inspired outfit, it’s time to hit the streets and admire the decor! There are few cities who do this better than New York. Even in the Upper East Side, people really get into decorating their townhomes. It’s honestly contagious. To find the best, I recommend strolling through the East 60s and 70s for the most classic Halloween decor. For even bolder displays, the West Village reigns supreme.

NYC Halloween: Blair Waldorf

NYC Halloween: Blair Waldorf

NYC, Halloween, Blair Waldorf, inspired, costume, Gossip Girl, prep school

White Shirt || Skirt || Ballet Flats || Handbag || Headband || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet || Optional: Navy Socks

Hey Upper East Siders! It would have been such a missed opportunity if I shared my NYC inspired Halloween costumes and didn’t include the legendary Blair Waldorf. The queen of the Upper East Side ruled Constance Billard with an iron fist. Each day of her reign started with breakfast al fresco on the MET steps with her most loyal subjects. If dressing like Blair is speaking to you for Halloween is speaking to you, here’s what you should have. Don’t forget to shop your closet!

Must Have: White Button-Down Shirt

Keeping up with the prep school wardrobe, a crisp white shirt fits the bill. While a simple collared shirt would work, I loved the eyelet detail on this blouse from Old Navy. It seems like the perfect Blair Waldorf twist on a classic piece.

Must Have: Navy Wool Mini Skirt

I’ve had this skirt in my closet for years. Deep down, I always thought of this as my Blair Waldorf skirt. It took a while, but it finally lived up to the name. This simple wool skirt, from LOFT, is a more youthful take on a standard pencil skirt.

Must Have: Navy or Black Ballet Flats

I so often gravitate towards a simple pair of heels, I forget how good ballet flats are. I’m not sure what the dress code was at Constance Billard, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a classic Chanel flat was standard issue.

Must Have: Bold Headband

Of all the pieces in a Blair Waldorf ensemble, this is by far the most important. If you were an avid Gossip Girl watcher, you may have fallen in love with each and every headband she put on. This bright red headband from J. Crew just seems like the perfect one for the job.

Strongly Encouraged: Classic Handbag

Even though Blair was just in high school, she had great taste in handbags. I feel like she would be a fan of the whole Neely and Chloe collection. They are lady-like inspired silhouettes for a modern world.

Optional: Knee-High Socks

Some of the best Blair Waldorf recreations I’ve seen includes one more little feature. To cap off the prep school, a pair of simple navy or black socks go a long way. Speaking as a former prep school teacher, this is practically part of the uniform. That’s especially true on colder days when it’s a mild attempt to keep your legs warm.

With a Gossip Girl reboot on the horizon, your favorite show from the 2010s just became relevant again. In a world that’s always changing, it feels good to dress up like Blair Waldorf, years later.

Black Plaid Maxi Dress

Black Plaid Maxi Dress

Dress || Heels ($45 off with code KATIE45) || Handbag (also) || Earrings || Watch || Bracelet

The Halloween witching hour is just over a week away. I’ve been sharing fun and easy costume ideas, but realized I’ve been lacking on normal festive outfits to get you in the spirit. When I first ordered this black plaid midi dress from Old Navy, I did it with the intention of having a witchy inspired outfit. I was also thinking about my tiny viral moment with the Amazon nightgown dress, and was even interviewed by the NY Post about it. This dress gave me some flashbacks, but in a more fitted style.

What came in the mail was exactly what I ordered, but it was so much better than I ever could imagine. It would have been so unfair to think of this dress as something to just wear for a seasonal costume. The length, the print, and the silhouette all make this an incredibly flattering dress. They say black is slimming, but I didn’t know that applied to black plaid too. This dress hit me in all of the right places for my body type. It also had incredible movement as I walked down 5th Avenue.

I haven’t even mentioned the best part about this dress. It’s a steal at only $45. Just too good to pass up, it also comes in a few different colors, like this incredible emerald green. If midi dresses aren’t your style, there is also a similar shorter style. All I can say is Old Navy has been absolutely killing it with their new feminine dresses.

This dress is oh-so versatile. It’s casual enough to throw on for running errands or brunch with the gals. At the same time, it’s modest enough to be worn for work and church. When it gets a little cooler, I’m excited to style it with my brown suede boots. For now, my Sarah Flint Perfect Pumps ($45 off with code KATIE45) and Stand Bucket Bag perfectly finish off this fall look.
