Road Tripping with AAA

Road Tripping with AAA

Road Tripping with AAA, Newport, Boat Show, Rhode Island, travel, trip

Wow! What a weekend! If you’ve been keeping up with my Instagram, then I’m sure you’ve already seen a boat load of pictures from our trip to Newport, Rhode Island. A little background story… Back in July, the wonderful team at AAA Northeast invited me to take a road trip and the Newport International Boat Show was the destination. As a lover of travel, the ocean and all seaside towns, I couldn’t have been more honored for the invitation.

My earliest memories of AAA actually start with road trips too. My parents, who have been loyal members for ages, would always make AAA their first destination before a long drive. No trip to grandma’s house was complete without one of their TripTik Maps or Guide Books to help lead the way. As the self-appointed navigator, I would pore over the maps and give directions that I’m sure my dad didn’t need.

Jump back to the present day and it’s important to know that AAA is more than just maps. They can help you with every aspect of traveling, both large and small, domestic and abroad. Although roadside assistance is their bread and butter, the discounts they offer from their partners will pay for your membership.

Okay, let’s talk about the actual trip. David and I got up bright and early to get on the road. Since we’re based in NYC, we actually decided to take the train into Stamford, CT as the first leg of our journey. Something I’ve heard from lots of seasoned New Yorkers is that renting a car in Connecticut is much cheaper than in the city. 45 minutes later and we’re at the Stamford train station with the Hertz office right across the street. The timing couldn’t have been better. Since AAA and Hertz have a fantastic partnership, and members have exclusive discounts, getting the car and on the open road was a snap. Off we went!

Two and half hours later, we were in the picturesque town of Newport. I couldn’t wait to get checked into our hotel and start exploring the boat show! Our stay was at the Newport Beach Hotel and it made for the perfect location! About a 30 minute walk from Bannister’s Wharf, we were just far enough away from the action and could enjoy some quiet. Almost completely surrounded by water, we had completely unobstructed views of the sunrise on First Beach, but could also take in the sunset at the hotel’s private rooftop deck. It was the best of everything.

Back in town, we took in all that the Newport Boat Show had to offer! Living in the city, we don’t have a boat just yet, but it’s always fun to daydream. We don’t plan on living in the city forever and being by the water is always home. If you are in the market, it’s probably the best place to shop, or at least start your search. The boat show had a little something for everyone. If you are on a budget, they had small crafts that cost a few thousand dollars. For the shopper with deep pockets, there were options costing several millions. Obviously, David and I wanted to take a look at those, but it was all just part of the daydream. The people working were so friendly and were happy to answer all of our questions.

Our time in Newport simply flew by! On Monday, reluctant to go back to the city, we made a quick stop at the nearby Shell gas station before returning our rental car to Hertz and catching the train. AAA members, along with their many other discounts, can save 5 cents per gallon at any Shell gas station. Even though we became car free since moving to New York, that’s a perk to keep in mind when we travel or when we decide to add a car into our life again.

Once again, thank you so much to AAA Northeast, Hertz, Shell, Newport Beach Hotel, and the Newport International Boat Show for an absolutely amazing trip! This is only the beginning of my love for Newport and I have AAA to thank for that! Be sure to check back soon for a Newport City Guide and my Packing List.

Love from NYC,
Katie

Fresh Releases, Volume 13 (J. Crew)

Fresh Releases, Volume 13 (J. Crew)

Fresh Releases, J. Crew, new arrivals, Fall, skirt, dress, classic with a twist

Graphic Pajama Set || Jungle Print Pencil Skirt || Teal Party Dress || Houndstooth Blazer || Tweed Lady Jacket || Tweed Work Dress

I shared an instastory the other day about some of the gorgeous new arrivals that J. Crew has lined up. To my delight, they went live yesterday and there’s even more for me to drool over. The current J. Crew campaign is all “classic with a twist”. It’s something that’s right up my alley. All of the new pieces definitely deliver, but these are top favorite pieces.

Graphic Pajama Set

Cooler weather means investing in a new pajamas for the season. This set is simple, but the graphic ZZZ just says it all. It’s a little right on the nose, but that’s what makes it so perfect.

Jungle Print Pencil Skirt

This is the piece I saw in store that got me oh-so excited! The coloring of the print is subtle, but still makes such a statement! I saw it in person with a navy turtleneck tucked in. I was instantly smitten!

Teal Party Dress

Whether you call it jade or teal, I’m seeing this beautiful color everywhere this season. I love this dress in particular because of the ruffled hemline. Even better, there is black bow detail that adds a lot of fun to an otherwise standard dress.

Houndstooth Blazer

Something else I’m seeing everywhere for the season is houndstooth. Just simple, black and white houndstooth. The blazer is as classic as you can get, with just a touch of Meghan Markle. When the fall officially hits NYC, I would love to layer this over a monochromatic look with a black sweater and jeans.

Tweed Lady Jacket

I added one of J. Crew’s lady jackets to my closet during the holidays, originally posted here, and it’s still one my favorites. I’m happy to report that the lady jacket is back and in a great neutral color. If you love Chanel style, but are on a budget, this is the piece for you!

Tweed Work Jacket

Just because I left the classroom, doesn’t I mean have to stop dressing professional. This dress looks absolutely stunning. More importantly it can be styled for a more casual affair. The thought of pairing it with these jaw-dropping heels from Loeffler Randall makes my heart stop.

Happy shopping!

Love from NYC,
Katie

On Leaving the Classroom

On Leaving the Classroom

On Leaving the Classroom, blogging, teaching, social media, career, opportunities, Rent the Runway, style blogger, NYC

Normally, during this time of year, I am talking all about teacher jitters and back to school style. You may have noticed that I’ve been a little quiet on that front. Here’s the thing… Over the summer, I made the extremely personal decision to take a step away from the classroom. I will always be a teacher, I love working with students, parents, and open-minded co-workers. However, a voice inside was telling me that I needed a change. It’s not something that I did lightly, but I’m so excited for what the future is going to hold.

I’ve been blogging for around five years now. Trust me, this career shift has nothing to do with focusing on my blog full-time. I am happy to have more time to focus on Orange to Apple and see it grow, but it wouldn’t be enough on its own. My two favorite aspects of blogging come down to writing and social media. Living in New York, there are countless opportunities to pursue and companies to work with.

Over the summer, originally posted here, I had the incredible opportunity of getting my feet wet in the world of marketing. I instantly fell in love! It’s fast paced, always changing, and requires a creative mindset. As I write this, I realize how surprisingly similar it is to teaching, minus the roomful of high-energy students. I really enjoyed using skills from the classroom and blogging to try something new.

So, what’s next for me? Right now, it’s a little up in the air. I have some freelance writing opportunities lined up that will hopefully open new doorways in the future. This weekend, I will be taking my very first, official “blogging” trip to Newport, RI on behalf of AAA. It’s going to be a blast and I have a whole batch of content planned for the trip. Afterwards, I’ll be sharing fall fashion when I get back to the city. I’ve also been spending a good chunk of my day looking into new job opportunities and companies I would want to work for.

In the meantime, I so love having the room to explore my city. I’ve lived here for just over a year, but never felt I was able to take advantage of it. On a typical day, I like to get up and pick a new place to grab a cup of coffee. Maybe I’ll take a long walk in a neighborhood I’m unfamiliar with, taking pictures all along the way. There’s so much inspiration in the city and now I get to soak it all in.

While I’m on this career journey, please continue to support my blog and social media, particularly Instagram. When I go into interviews for social media positions, it’s the first thing they ask me about. I’m so appreciative of you, my readers, for your following, but also for David, my husband who has been with me every step of the way during this process. If any new opportunities arise, you will be one of the first to know.

Love from NYC,
Katie
