May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Dress c/o || Similar Sandals || Handbag || Earrings

Let’s rewind the clock a few years. I was a collegiate swimmer at Florida State University. Growing up as a swimmer in the Sunshine State, I had nearly ten years of two practices per day in the sun. I didn’t know it at the time, but my skin was screaming for help. My skin tans extremely easily, so much so that I’m often confused for being Italian or Greek. Since I never burned, I thought that meant I was in the clear. Why would I worry about sunscreen? The answer came to me as I was looking through old pictures. The sun damage on my skin was absolutely horrifying. More important than the fact that it looked awful is that I was putting myself at risk for skin cancer. Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I’m very proud to partner with Cabana Life to share a quick reminder to make skin health a top priority. Here are four easy tips to add to your daily routine.

Load Up on Daily SPF

Don’t just save the bottle of sunscreen for the beach or the pool. Each time you go outside, your body is hit with a wave of UV rays. Over the course of your lifetime, that can add up. Since 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer before age 70, it’s best to be proactive. Part of my daily routine is putting on a light layer of SPF 40 sunscreen to keep my skin safe. You find the brand that’s right for me, but my favorites are the Unseen Sunscreen from Supergoop because of its clean chemical formula and Coola Organic Sunscreen to keep your whole body safe. Don’t forget some SPF for your lips!

Protect Your Beautiful Face

The skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of your body. It’s also the most noticeable part of you. Because of that, you want to take a few extras steps to cover and protect your skin. On my daily walks through the neighborhood, I always grab a wide-brimmed hat to keep my face in the shade. I know it makes a huge difference to keep me cool and out of the intense Florida sun. Obviously, it’s essential to wear sunglasses to protect your vision, but they also help protect you from skin cancer as well. I recently learned that melanomas could also form on your eyes, just like any other part of your skin. Look for lenses that have 100% UVA/UVB protection. Krewe is one of my favorite brands and checks all of the boxes to keep my eyes healthy.

Wear An Extra Dose SPF

Cabana Life is a woman-owned company and founded by a skin cancer survivor. While a simple t-shirt typically offers only an equivalent of SPF 5 coverage, their clothing includes SPF 50+. That means it helps block 98% of UVA and UVB rays. While skin safety is their number one goal, they don’t want you to skip on style. Their dresses and tops are perfect for both lounging in the sun and a night on the town. My favorite style is hands down, the Sleeveless Terry Tunic. Available in a wide range of colors, wearing it makes me feel like I’m in a Slim Aarons photo from 1960’s Palm Beach. This style is a classic, but their whole collection is current and fun. For even more protection, you’ll love the Long-Sleeve Terry Tunic.

Schedule A Yearly Check-Up

It’s so easy to let annual checkups with your primary care doctor pass by, but there’s one that I never miss out on! I’ve been visiting my local dermatologist annually since I was in middle school. He checks my skin for new spots or ones that may have rapidly grown since my last appointment. While your dermatologist knows what to look for, I recommend making a note of anything new that pops up beforehand. You know your skin best, and new moles or spots may be even more obvious to you. Having an annual dermatologist appointment is also the perfect opportunity to discuss sunscreen recommendations that best match your skin type. If you haven’t seen your dermatologist in a while, book your appointment today!

Cabana Life, Skin, Skin Cancer, Cancer Awareness, UPF, Sunscreen, Florida

Having the darkest tan possible was the number one priority when I was younger. My goodness, how things have changed! While I can’t undo the years of damage I’ve done to my skin, skin health is a top priority from here on out. Be kind to your skin, and it will help keep you healthy and beautiful for years to come!

Love from Florida,
Katie

Thank you so much to Cabana Life for working with me on this blog post and sending over this beautiful dress. You can see why I love this woman-owned brand so much here.

What I’ve Read Recently, Vol. 2

What I’ve Read Recently, Vol. 2
šŸ“ Downtown St. Pete, Florida

What I've Read, Great Green Room, Park Avenue Summer, Book List

Dress || Similar Sandals || Handbag || Earrings || Book

When I was a kid, I was an ardent bookworm. There was always a book in my hand and my nose in a book. I really wanted to find that passion again. So each year, I set the resolution to read more, and each year it’s completely overlooked. Maybe it’s because I spend more time at home, but I’m happy to report that I’m reading again! I’ve read through ten books in just the past few months, averaging about one per week. Here’s a quick look at the new additions to my bookshelf and what I’ve read recently.Ā

Educated
Reading List, Bookstagram, Bibliophile, Books
Park Avenue Summer

Educated

Educated is such an incredibly powerful book. I’m almost ashamed that it took me so long to read. Admittedly, there are several instances in this book that made me uncomfortable. I either feared for Tara’s life or couldn’t comprehend how cruel people could be. Still, the message is clear, especially now. Education is such a gift and isn’t one to be taken for granted. No matter the grade or subject, every teacher should take the time to read this memoir.

Park Avenue Summer

In 1965, Cosmopolitan magazine named Helen Gurley Brown as their new editor-in-chief. Because of her willingness to talk about female sexuality and identity, it was considered an incredibly controversial decision. Park Avenue Summer is a fictionalized account of her first year at the helm and the pressures she faced by being at the forefront of this new frontier. This book was such a fun read, which you’ll absolutely love if you’re a fan ofĀ Mad Men.Ā

Capote’s Women
In the Great Green Room

Capote’s Women

I find the 1960s in New York City an exciting point in American history. The glitz and glamour of city life begin to fuse with the traditional values from the 1950s. The fashion was great, but the stories that came from this time period are even better. Author Truman Capote was at the center of NYC social life, along with the high-society women he kept close by.Ā Capote’s WomenĀ shares the lives of these powerful women and how Capote ultimately let all of these relationships slip through his fingers.

In the Great Green Room

I don’t want to overstate this, but In the Great Green Room may be the favorite biography I have ever read! You may know Margaret Wise Brown as the author of Goodnight Moon, but she was a prolific children’s writer who worked under countless pseudonyms. Behind the scenes, her life was filled with love, adventure, and just a touch of scandal. Although she left this world tragically too young, it’s a story about following your passions and trusting destiny.

Sunshine State
Made in Manhattan

Sunshine State

While visiting a St. Pete bookstore and wine bar (what a terrific combination), I decided to pick up their book club’s pick of the month. It was all on a whim, but I’m so happy I did! Sarah Gerard is local to the area.Ā Sunshine StateĀ is a series of essays she shares about growing up in the area. While it was different from my own experiences, it was interesting to see the city from a different viewpoint. Her piece about homelessness in the area was especially powerful!Ā

Made in Manhattan

Compared to some of my other recent picks, this was probably the most light-hearted. Consider Made in Manhattan a modern-day version of My Fair Lady, only with reversed roles. When the path of a prim Upper East Sider crosses with a party boy from Louisiana, they learn more from each other than they ever thought possible. I ended up reading this book in one day because it was such a fun time that I couldn’t put it down!

Confident Women
Lost in Paris

Confident Women

Just by chance, I started reading this book while watchingĀ Inventing Anna. The timing couldn’t be more perfect. While Anna Delvey is the most recent woman to con her way into our hearts, she is by no means the first or the most accomplished. Confident Women shares the stories of over a dozen women with a penchant for manipulations and cons. While they all have incredibly different backstories, their shared ability to charm and inspire is unmistakable. Tori Telfer has also writtenĀ Lady Killers,Ā which is coming up on my to-read list.

Lost in Paris

Mother-daughter relationships can be complicated, especially for Hannah Bond. Let’s throw a mysterious inheritance into the mix, and tensions are almost guaranteed to rise. Lost in Paris is the story of Hannah Marla, who just learned about an inherited apartment in Paris, stuck in time since 1940. While navigating this new development, they begin to learn more about each other and grow a strong bond because of it.

What I've Read, Great Green Room, Park Avenue Summer, Book List

The next book on my journey to 50 in 2022 that I’m currently reading isĀ Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters. Although I just started it, I highly recommend it if you’re a fan ofĀ The CrownĀ or anything else about the Royal Family. Before I get ahead of myself, you can expect a mini-review in my next issue of ā€˜What I’ve Read Recently.’ Until then, keep reading!

Love from Florida,
Katie

Shop Small for Mother’s Day
šŸ“ Downtown St. Pete, Florida

Mother's Day, Shop Small, Mom, Shopping, Cabana Life

Similar Dress (Similar) || Wedges || Handbag || Earrings

Mother’s Day is fast approaching. If your mom is anything like mine, she’s the hardest person to buy gifts for. In true mom fashion, she never asks for anything, but I still want to give her the world! To try and find the perfect gift is a difficult task. I recommend starting small and shopping with a small business. There are bonus points if it’s a woman-owned business. Often, you’ll find a gift that is personal and incredibly thoughtful. Here’s a look at some of my favorite small businesses to shop for Mother’s Day. If the shipping time extends past Mother’s Day, remember that it’s perfectly acceptable to shower your mom with gifts year-round.

Cabana Life

Of course, we want our moms to be around for a long, long time. Skin cancer is one of those scary things that can sneak up on anyone. Cabana Life is a woman-owned company that specializes in beach style that includes SPF 50+. I’ll be working with them in May to highlight Skin Cancer Awareness Month, but this long-sleeve tunic dress will make an excellent gift for any mom who prefers a day at the pool or beach.

Breck and Grier

You all probably know my penchant for straw bags. I think they are the perfect summertime accessory and make for an even better gift. Breck and Grier was created by two Connecticut-based sisters to bring Moroccan straw bags to the masses. They can personalized to match the style of your mom, grandma, or any woman in your life. Last year, they launched a collaboration with one of the stylish mom’s I know, Mary from Mary and Crew and it’s still a personal favorite!

Sarah Flint

I have long been and lover of Sarah Flint’s gorgeous footwear. There is so much love that goes into each design. You can always expect the highest quality and style. If your mom is a shoe-lover, consider beginning her collection of Sarah Flint. You know her style best, and there’s always something to match. My personal favorites are the Perfect Block Sandal 60, Natalie Flat, and Perfect Emma. Get $50 off your first pair by using the code SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE.

Katie Kime

I am a sucker for anything toile. The Floridian in mean obviously loves her Florida Toile. While Katie Kime offers a whole rainbow of patterns and prints, her city-based toiles are my favorite. When it comes to shopping for Mom, the sky is the limit for this lifestyle brand. Pajamas, phone cases, wall art, stationery, and beyond! You can find a piece that is as one-of-a-kind as your mom.

Mother's Day, Shop Small, Mom, Shopping, Cabana Life

Hellenic Aesthetic

I went to high school with the owner ofĀ Hellenic Aesthetic, Marianthi. She beautifully showcases her Greek heritage by showcasing Greece-based designers. Her in-house jewelry line is filled with stunning 14k gold pieces that constantly inspire me to hop on the next plane to Athens. For Mother’s Day, I loveĀ this gorgeous Mama necklaceĀ is available in yellow, rose, and white golds.Ā

Estelle Colored Glass

Founder and owner ofĀ Estelle Colored Glasses, Stephanie, is inspired by her grandma, who loved antiquing through South Carolina. FromĀ stemwareĀ toĀ cake stands, her glass pieces are absolutely stunning and come in a rainbow of colors. It seems like a loving nod to dinner parties from years ago when the tablescape was everything. I can’t decide between theĀ wine glassesĀ or theĀ champagne coupes, which pales compared to actually picking a color. For Mother’s Day,Ā this coral-colored wine glass setĀ would be a great gift idea for a mom who entertains and unwinds.

Julia Amory

Recently, I shopped withĀ Julia Amory, who partners with multiple print shops in Jaipur, India. The result is a collection of beautiful block print pieces, from table clothes to dresses. I ordered this gorgeous pareo wrap and instantly began daydreaming about how to style it. They also have a complete line of dresses and tablewares to shop and enjoy!

Hotel Lobby Candle

Blogger,Ā Lindsay Silberman, has recently become one of my favorite follows! She seems so approachable, upbeat, and shares a truly intimate view of her life in NYC and Miami. One of her most recent ventures isĀ Hotel Lobby Candle. As a traveler, one of my favorite things about staying in gorgeous hotels is that they typically have a fantastic fragrance to match. I list the lobby at the Vinoy Hotel in St. Pete as one of my favorite scents. Inspired by the luxury hotels from her travels, this candle would make for a perfect Mother’s Day gift.Ā

Mother's Day, Shop Small, Mom, Shopping, Cabana Life

Weezie

It seems like the robe has been a standard mom-gift for all of eternity. Weezie is not your standard robe. Made in sunny Portugal with 100% organic and OEKO-TEXĀ® certified long-staple cotton, they are incredible. I the proud owner of their Long Robe, and I safely say I use it daily. Add a fun monogram for a personal touch.

St. Armands Designs

Jewelry always makes for such a fantastic gift. That’s especially true when you find a woman-owned small business with so much coastal flare. St. Armands Designs offer so many incredible earrings that make a statement. I always prefer her raffia pieces. I know that’s not everyone’s choice, so be sure to look at her beautiful pearl pieces as well.

Pamela Munson

Memories of the beach inspired these perfectly ladylike bags. They are timeless classics with a laidback twist. Whether you’re shopping for your mom, grandma, or even yourself, Pamela Munson handbags are sure to please. Just wait until you see their beautiful The Spring 2022 Getaway Collection. The Shell looks like it’s straight out of The Little Mermaid.

Gray Malin

The older I get, the more and more I appreciate splurging on a piece of art. I think it’s because we have a home of our own to decorate. A fun photographer to explore is Gray Malin. He is one of my favorites and instills a tremendous feeling of wanderlust. When shopping for mom, think of a memory or destination that has a lot of significance to her and go from there. If she’s a traveler, she will swoon over the beautiful snapshots of her favorite places. For the dog moms in your life, definitely take a look at all of his pieces that include a four-legged friend.

Lake Pajamas

Lake Pajamas are the softest things around and perfect for Mom! The 100% Pima Cotton feels softer than a cloud and is great for lounging, or more accurately. I have a few pairs, and it’s actually an effort not to wear them 24/7. I can already see my mom in this Tank-Long Set. If that’s not your own mom’s style, be sure to take a look at everything they offer.

Amanda Lindroth

Amanda Lindroth offers so many incredible pieces that make your mom’s heart flutter. Sometimes it can be tricky buying items for the home, but these pieces are all effortlessly chic. I recommend buying one ofĀ her signature bamboo framesĀ and putting a special family photo inside. It’s an instant sentimental gift that your mom is sure to love! Another great option would be this signed copy ofĀ Amanda Lindroth’s book,Ā Island Hopping, especially if she is a design lover.Ā

Sarah Bray Bermuda

This gift is for the mom who loves to be out in the sun! I recently purchased aĀ Sarah Bray hatĀ for myself, and it made its big debut on our most recent trip to Harbour Island. If your mom prefers to spend the day in the garden or at the beach, thenĀ this wide-brimmed hatĀ will be perfect for her! There is a rainbow of ribbons to choose from, or you can opt for an exceptional vintage floral one instead.Ā

Lingua Franca

I have long been a fan ofĀ Lingua Franca, an NYC-based company. I truly admire what Rachelle has created, a line of sustainably sourced, fair-trade cashmere sweaters that help inspire change.Ā The collection for Mother’s DayĀ can be personalized to reflect all of the children in your mom’s life. You can also opt for one of their signature sweaters with tongue-in-cheek embroidery like ā€œBusy as a Motherā€ or ā€œBecause I Said So.ā€Ā

Mother's Day, Shop Small, Mom, Shopping, Cabana Life

At the end of the day, your mom will probably appreciate anything you gift her! If you live far away, be sure to give her a call and shower her with all of the love that she deserves. To all moms, grandmas, and soon-to-be moms, happy early Mother’s Day from the entire Orange to Apple team.
