What I’ve Read Recently, Vol. 1

What I’ve Read Recently, Vol. 1
šŸ“ St. Pete, Florida

Book Review, Biblophile, Reading List, Books, Read, Classic Style

Button-Down || Jeans || Heels || Similar Handbag || Earrings || Bracelet || Lip Color

When I was a kid, I was an ardent bookworm. There was always a book in my hand and my nose in a book. I really wanted to find that passion again. So each year, I set the resolution to read more, and each year it’s completely overlooked. Maybe it’s because I spend more time at home, but I’m happy to report that I’m reading again! I’ve read through ten books in just the past few months, averaging about one per week. Here’s a quick look at the new additions to my bookshelf and what I’ve read recently.

The Season
Carnegie Hill

The Season

While I was not raised with the debutante life and didn’t know much about its history, I found The Season to be absolutely fascinating. The author, Kristen Richardson, expertly unveils and explains a lesser-known side of women’s history in the United States and internationally. To understand the future of the feminist movement of today, you need to have a solid understanding of the past.

Carnegie Hill

Maybe it’s because I’m more homesick for NYC than I realize, but I could not put Carnegie Hill down! I completely devoured it in under 48 hours. While I had the privilege of living in this chic corner of the Upper East Side, our building wasn’t a co-op. Still, I can perfectly picture some of the characters based on my previous neighbors. This coming-of-age novel perfectly depicts the insecurities that can arise when change happens, even when it’s a good change.

Sister Parish
The Invitation

Sister Parish

While reading Bunny Mellon: The Pursuit of Perfection, I kept seeing another name appear throughout her life. Sister Parish was an American interior designer and the first practitioner to decorate the White House during the Camelot years. Like Bunny Mellon, I loved reading about women who followed their passion during a point in history when women were expected to raise a family. It’s a great source of inspiration to pursue your interests and turn those endeavors into widely successful and cherished businesses.

The Invitation

The Invitation was my first book of 2022. I have a goal for reading 50 books throughout the year, so I decided to make more novels a part of that list. I love reading non-fiction or biographies, but it sometimes takes me a few weeks to finish them. This book is historical fiction about a journalist on a press tour in Italy for an upcoming film. If you’ve ever seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I imagine Paul Varjak’s character before becoming Holly Golightly’s neighbor.

French Exit
The Dollhouse

French Exit

If you have a penchant for Wes Anderson films, you’ll simply love French Exit. It follows a mother-son duo in Manhattan and Paris after learning that their fortune has run dry. Oh yeah, they also believe that a stray cat contains the husband’s soul. I know that sounds quirky, but the story discusses important themes like status, redemption, and hope. I sincerely enjoyed reading this book and felt so connected to each character.

The Dollhouse

Yes, another New York-based novel because they’re my favorite. A story just comes alive when you can perfectly picture the setting! This is Fiona Davis’ debut novel, and since, she has written five additional books with NYC as the backdrop. The Dollhouse takes place at the Barbizon, both in the present as a luxury community and during the 1950s when it’s a hotel for professional women. It feels like there are two stories in one, plus an incredible twist at the end!

I Left My Homework in the Hamptons
Limelight

I Left My Homework in the Hamptons

As a former teacher in an Upper East Side private school, I was hooked by this title alone. Since I was with a class full of first graders, I never heard ā€˜I Left My Homework in the Hamptons’ as an excuse. Instead, I had several students with either beach homes in the Hamptons or country homes upstate. I thought this book was really insightful and serves as a reminder to let kids be kids.

Limelight

Okay, one last book about New York, I promise! Well, at least for this blog post… Limelight was a wild ride and had me instantly in love with Amy Poeppel’s writing style. I can’t wait to read her other novels! This story follows Allison Brinkley and her family, who has just been uprooted from their lives in Texas to move to Manhattan. From my own time in the city, there are many elements that I connected with. Even better, I loved seeing the growth with each character from chapter to chapter.

Bookstagram, Bibliophile, Classic Style, Anthropolgie

The next book on my journey to 50 in 2022 that I’m currently reading is Educated by Tara Westbrook. As a former teacher, this has been on my radar for a while. I just regret not picking it up sooner! I’m just about halfway, but I already know this is a book that will linger with me for years to come. Before I get ahead of myself, you can expect a mini-review on my next issue of ‘What I’ve Read Recently.’ Until then, keep reading!

Love from Florida,
Katie

St. Pete Date Night, Part 3

St. Pete Date Night, Part 3
šŸ“ St. Pete, Florida

St. Pete, date night, Valentine's Day, Cabana Life, Florida

Dress || Heels ($50 off with code SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE) || Clutch || Earrings

Another St. Pete date night! The Sunshine City is home. On and off, I’ve lived here in the area for over 10 years. Because of that, I’ve learned a thing or two about having a night out with loved ones. Last year, I created my date night itinerary, just in time for Valentine’s Day. This year, I’m sharing the newest rendition. Make reservations now and you can have a perfect St. Pete date night.

Indulge in a Mini Spa Day

Before your date night, give yourself some time to self-indulge… Even if it’s for an hour or so. My current place in town for ā€œmeā€ time is Paint Nail Bar on Central Ave. It’s a non-toxic, full service nail salon, and their work is incredible! Getting a manicure and/or pedicure will be the perfect break between the workday and an evening out with your significant other. If you want your hair to be equally on point as your nails, I highly recommend Sip and Dry. It’s part of my weekly routine and is the reason why hair looks good for pictures.

Happy Hour at The Scott

The Scott is a relatively new cocktail bar located in the historic Cordova Inn. As soon as it opened to the public, it became an instant classic. The cozy navy walls are covered with vintage photos of St. Pete and really give you a sense of how much this city has changed in the past century. The cocktail list isn’t the most extensive but instead provides perfectly made classics. Do not pass on ordering the Cordova Martini. It’s almost exclusively a local creation with Banyan Reserve Vodka and coffee from Hogg Batch, creating one of the best espresso martinis I’ve ever had!

Dinner for Two at Mangosteen

One of the newest restaurants in St. Pete has quickly become one of my favorites. Mangosteen describes itself as a ‘tropical cocktail bar and restaurant,’ serving an incredible menu of tapas, sushi, stir fry, and tacos. It’s a beautiful space, but I keep visiting because the food is delicious! For date night, David and I tend to order several dishes to share. Their seaweed salad, pork dumplings, and the lemongrass bowl are personal favorites. Honestly, there are no wrong choices, though! Their inventive cocktail menu makes for the perfect meal pairing. I especially love the 22-43. Think of it like a banana-infused old-fashioned.

Live Music at The Floridian

Don’t you just love when historic buildings can get a second life? The Floridian Social Club is a lively cocktail lounge and music venue but opened initially as a bank in 1924. Over the past 98 years, it has taken on many different personas, including a movie theater and concert hall. It’s the passion project of a lifelong St. Pete native, and so much love has been put into the space. End the night with a cocktail and a live show for a truly intimate, historical experience.

St. Pete, date night, Valentine's Day, Cabana Life, Florida

As St. Pete continues to grow and develop as a city, I’ll be right there to find the latest and greatest restaurants to share with you. I’m always happy to take recommendations, so comment your favorite St. Pete restaurants below. For more details, be sure to read my dining posts about Wild Child, Baba, and The Library. Bon appetite!

Shop Small for Valentine’s Day

Shop Small for Valentine’s Day

Shop Small, Valentine's Day, Breck & Grier, love, heart

Similar Dress || Wedges || Handbag || Earrings || Lip Color

Apart from Christmas, Valentine’s Day is one of the top gift-giving days of the year. It’s when you can extend a gift as a way to sayĀ I Love You. Instead of exchanging, David and I always opt for a dinner out and one of our favorite restaurants around St. Pete. If you’re shopping around this Valentine’s Day, I highly recommend shopping with small businesses. Recently, this has been a primary focus, and I plan to continue in 2022 and beyond. Here’s a quick roundup of some of my favorite small businesses and what they offer for theĀ perfectĀ Valentine’s Day gift.Ā

Weezie Towels

The Weezie Beach Towel is the kind of Valentine’s Day gift that I would use so frequently! Your beach towel will wear so many hats on your day out to the sand and surf: blanket, hair wrap, coverup, and the list goes on! Weezie makes the closest thing you’ll find to the perfect beach towel. It’s soft and plush, but somehow isn’t a magnet for all the sand you could pick up along the way. Embroidery it with a sweet message that’s just right for the holiday.

St. Armands Designs

Jewelry always makes for such a fantastic gift. That’s especially true when you find a woman-owned small business with so much coastal flare. St. Armands Designs offer so many incredible earrings that make a statement. For Valentine’s Day, I always wear my pink beaded earrings. I know that’s not everyone’s choice, so be sure to look at her beautiful pearl pieces as well.

The Tiny Tassel

The Tiny Tassel is a Charleston-based company from owner Mimi Striplin. She is such a ray of sunshine on my Instagram feed. While she’s started with darling tassel earrings, she’s expanded to an entire collection of gifts, accessories, and even handmade garments. For a sweet little Valentine’s Day gift, take a look at their holiday shop, especially these fun Charlotte Earrings.

Kiel James Patrick

I couldn’t help but include several Kiel James Patrick pieces in my shopping guide. As I was exploring, each item was more precious than the last. I’m itching to getĀ this Mother of Pearl ringĀ for myself! My favorite, though, isĀ this beautifully embroidered sweater. It comes in this pristine shade of ivory, as well as a more versatile navy.Ā

Sarah Bray Bermuda

When you live in the Florida sun, it’s important to have an army of sun hats on hand. Writer Sarah Bray-West recently moved to Bermuda,Ā one of my favorite destinations, and launched a sustainable collection of sunhats to match.Ā Each hatĀ comes with a set of grosgrain ribbons so you can feel like you have a completely different look every time. The Hibiscus Red ribbon will be a spot-on match for any outdoor Valentine’s Day activity.Ā

Lake Pajamas

Lake Pajamas are the softest things around and perfect for Valentine’s Day! The 100% Pima Cotton feels softer than a cloud and is great for lounging, or more accurately. I have a few pairs, and it’s actually an effort not to wear them 24/7. I can already see my loved ones, or even myself in this Long-Short Set. If that’s not your own mom’s style, be sure to take a look at everything they offer.

Shop Small, Valentine's Day, Breck & Grier, love, heart

Pamela Munson

If I was magically turned into a handbag, I would probably look like a Pamela Munson handbag. Each season, when she unveils a new collection, I fall in love with each and every piece. Inspired by childhood trips to Florida and the Bahamas, each bag looks specially made for a tropical getaway! More importantly, the materials used are ethically and sustainably sourced.

Sunshine Style

My friend on the East Coast of Florida, Katie, has created the sweetest little Etsy shop called Sunshine Style. I’m so happy to see it grow! She makes a cute collection of coordinating masks and scrunchies. With so many pastel pinks in stripes and ginghams, it’s hard to pick one headband to add to your rotation.

Breck and Grier

You all probably know my penchant for straw bags. I think they are the perfect summertime accessory and make for an even better gift.Ā Breck and GrierĀ was created to bring Moroccan straw bags to the masses. They can be personalized to match the style of your mom, grandma, or any woman in your life. Recently, they launchedĀ a Valentine’s Day collectionĀ that is perfect to wear year-round!

Sarah Flint

What can I say about Sarah Flint that hasn’t already been said? This thoughtful, woman-owned company offers some of the most amazing shoes on the market today. Everything about them was designed with a busy, modern woman in mind. The quality, the support, and the style are individually reason enough to invest.Ā This particular pair of Perfect Emma heelsĀ would be perfect to wear for Valentine’s Day date night.Ā

Hellenic Aesthetic

I went to high school with the owner ofĀ Hellenic Aesthetic, Marianthi. She beautifully showcases her Greek heritage by showcasing Greece-based designers. One of her latest collections is Valentine’s t-shirts that you could wear all year round.Ā A red tee says ā€œI Love Youā€Ā in Greek (Ļƒā€™Ī±Ī³Ī±Ļ€ĻŽ), whileĀ the white tee says ā€œMy Loveā€ (αγάπη μου). Both are amazingly comfortable and a great way to sprinkle the Greek Isles into your everyday life.Ā

Estelle Colored Glass

Stephanie, founder and owner, is inspired by her grandma, who loved antiquing through South Carolina. FromĀ stemwareĀ toĀ cake stands, her glass pieces are absolutely stunning and come in a rainbow of colors. It seems like a loving nod to dinner parties from years ago when the tablescape was everything. I can’t decide between theĀ wine glassesĀ or theĀ champagne coupes, which pales in comparison to actually picking a color. For Valentine’s Day,Ā this rose-colored flute glass setĀ would be just what you need for an evening for two.Ā

Shop Small, Valentine's Day, Breck & Grier, love, heart

While our own Valentine’s Day plans have yet to be made, I feel incredibly thankful to have David in my life. If you’re single, be sure to take the day to celebrate the most important person in your life… Yourself! Self care, especially this year, should be maintained and nurtured. If that includes a little self-gifting, by all means, shop away!

Katie
