How to Survive a Winter Beach Day

How to Survive a Winter Beach Day
📍 Seaside, FL

Let me set the scene for you. You like in the Northeast or Midwest, and there’s nothing but snow and below-freezing temperatures in the forecast for the next few months. You haven’t seen the sun in weeks and desperately need a vacation to somewhere warm after the stress of the holiday season. I know it’s no secret, but Florida is probably the easiest destination that you have your eyes set on. As I write this blog post, it’s 60 degrees and sunny in St. Pete. This time of year is also my favorite to take advantage of our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, but it takes a little bit of planning. Here are my best tips to fully enjoy and survive a Winter beach day in the Sunshine State.

Don’t Skip Sunscreen

I have to put this tip first because it’s just so important to your overall health. Even if the day isn’t as warm or sunny compared to the summertime, don’t skip sunscreen! Sometimes it’s days like this when you need a healthy slathering of SPF the most! Trust me, the sunburn will hurt just as bad, and you’ll be kicking yourself for not applying when you had the chance. I recommend opting for a reef-friendly variety, like this Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion from SunBum, to help our aquatic friends stay healthy.

Expects Some Crowds

Since so many people flew the cold weather for a sunny escape, this is high season for many parts of Florida. We call it Snow Bird Season because many are flocking to their vacation homes for the season. What does this mean for you? Well, don’t necessarily expect empty beaches and shops. Plus, be extra careful while driving and parking. This is also my obligatory reminder that locals aren’t on vacation and have to get through their standard workday. Just be polite to everyone you come across, especially those in the service industry, and maybe skip being the crazy partier.

Pack A Few Layers

If the weather report calls for a warm day, coastal winds can tell a very different story. There’s nothing worse than being cold and shivering on the beach. Especially during this time of year, I always wear a long-sleeve tunic dress that could potentially keep me warm while sitting in the sun. This dress from SZ Blockprints has long been my favorite and comes in several colors. Another great option at a lower price is the famous (or maybe infamous) Amazon boho dress. If you’re brave enough to get in the water, also consider having a change of clothes handy in case the first set gets wet.

Bring Your Own Seating

Remember how blistering hot the sand can be in the Summer sun? Well, the opposite is true in the winter. The sand does an incredible job of staying cold on chillier days. If you find yourself sitting on the ground, there’s a good chance you’ll get cold quickly. To skip that feeling, be sure to pack your own beach chair. If you’re staying at a resort or beach house rental, they will most likely have one for you. If not, these sling chairs from Serena & Lily are easy to pack and are surprisingly comfortable. I’m also a huge fan of a similar style from The Inside. Don’t forget to throw in a beach blanket for those particularly windy days for good measure.

Consider a Unisuit or Rash Guard

Since we know that layers can be crucial on a winter beach day, you may want to consider investing in either a unisuit or rash guard. I mean, if it’s good enough for surfers, it’s good enough for me! Think of it as one additional layer of protection from the sun and cold. The good news is, there are so many cute options out there now because caring for your skin is very chic! Cabana Life, J. Crew, and Lands End are some personal favorites. Find the style and pattern that works best for your personality!

Schedule for the Later Afternoon

Typically, during the summertime, I sing a very different tune. I get to the beach first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds and peak heat of the day. In the Winter, I have a slightly more relaxed approach. Because I actually want to be in the sun and sand during the hottest point of the day, I aim for a post-lunchtime excursion and am happy to stay until just before sunset. While I’m still avoiding the crowds, I can stay comfortable while sitting with the best seat in the house.

Double Check Local Laws

This tip almost falls into the bucket of “locals live here.” Double-check that you know the laws regarding the local beaches. Some have designated hours, while others require special permitting for bonfires or don’t permit that all. Others still even have sound ordinances that you should definitely be aware of. The big one to keep in mind is local about open containers and adult beverages. Those, in particular, have been known to cost tourists and locals alike hundreds or thousands of dollars!

Keep Moving Around

Here’s one final tip that’s more common sense than anything. On these cooler winter days in Florida, keep moving! As tempting as it is just to sit back and relax, you may find yourself getting cold pretty quickly. Yes, even in the sun! Even just going for a walk down the shoreline will help you stay warm and get the blood pumping. Not to mention, it’s such a good workout. One of our favorite beach games is just good, old-fashioned Kadima. It’s just as fun as tennis or pickleball, but no net to fuss with! Pack these into your beach bag for kid and adult-friendly activity.

Winter, Beach Day, Florida, beach, vacation, tropical

No matter what sunny destination you end up visiting, I hope you have an incredible time! Even though Florida is almost warm, I still have the wanderlust to go to an even more tropical beach. Should it be Bermuda, Harbour Island again, or Mexico? How about all three!

Love from Florida,
Katie

Even though I’ve lived in Sunshine State nearly my entire life, I’m always blown away when I get to visit (and revisit) the best that Florida has to offer. While I’m a Gulf Coast girl, I typically stay towards the state’s southern end: St. Pete, Boca Grande, Palm Beach. That’s why it’s such a treat to have an excuse to vacation along 30A, particularly on Alys Beach. With its pristine streets and even prettier facades, the design comes straight from my imagination. On New Years Day, I wandered through this charming town. Trust me, it was the perfect way to relax after a late night of ringing in 2022. Here are a few snapshots that will make you want to book a vacation rental ASAP!

Coffee at Raw and Juicy

Every great day starts with a strong coffee and croissant at the local coffee shop. For Alys Beach, that means making a stop at Raw & Juicy. Along with a complete list of coffee and tea drinks, you can find a menu of smoothies to help you begin the day on a healthy note. They also have a full breakfast menu if you need something just a little more filling. Don’t fret if you see a long line out the door. It goes by in a flash, and there’s plenty of seating in their courtyard. Better still, bring your coffee and treats to-go for the next crucial activity.

Explore the Stunning Town

Now that you’re full of caffeine and subsistence, it’s time to wander through the town. Seriously, don’t let any side street go unexplored. You’ll find avenue after avenue of pristine white stucco with expertly placed splashes of color. While great boutiques are on their way, the town is still relatively quiet. The one shop to visit is Alys Shoppe. I’m such a sucker for buying golf hats at my favorite destinations, and Alys Beach was no exception. On top of that, they have an incredible collection of resort wear for you to throw on during your next beach vacation. You may even end up wearing it straight out of the store.

Cocktails and Dinner at Citizen

We happened to visit Citizen for a New Years Day brunch, but wow, is this restaurant incredible! I was in sheer awe of the perfect nautical decor with a healthy dose of navy, gold, and rattan. A way to my heart is always great branding, and Citizen just knocks it out of the park! More importantly, their menu is a treat from start to finish. Start with a cocktail from their seasonally rotating drink menu. While you truly can’t go wrong, their frozen Piña Colada will always be my top pick! From their food menu, it’s such a great range of dishes, including vegetarian and vegan. Wash it all down with a slice of their Atlantic Beach Pie to round out your meal.

  • Rosemary Beach, Florida, 30A, Beach, Vacation

Make Your Way Towards Rosemary Beach

After you’ve had your fun in Alys Beach, be sure to sneak over to the very next town. Rosemary Beach has an entirely different aesthetic but is just as unique and beautiful in its own right. The designers for the town actually took inspiration from the French Quarter in New Orleans. Because it’s more developed, you’ll find a whole slew of dining and shopping options. If you simply fall in love and want to stay here on your next trip, then the best place in town would be The Pearl Hotel. I somehow know that I could easily convince David to stay here the next time we find ourselves on 30A.

Even for me, having a beach holiday is always such a treat! Pair that with good weather, great friends, and there’s truly nothing better. I hope these pictures serve as a bit of inspiration for your Monday morning. Let me know if you’ve ever been to 30A and, if you have, what you loved most about it.

Brighter Days with Cabana Life

Brighter Days with Cabana Life

Cabana Life, Florida, Brighter Days, Resolutions, New Year

Dress from Cabana Life (c/o) || Similar Sandals || Clutch || Earrings || Bracelet

Although the weather was pretty cloudy while visiting Seaside, I couldn’t help but feel the optimism for a new year! One element that I’m incredible excited for is my partnership with Cabana Life. I give them a proper introduction in this blog post from November. A Florida-based, woman-owned company, they are slowly taking over my entire wardrobe. So, don’t be surprised if you see me wearing it all year long! For the start of the new year, they are launching a new campaign called ‘Brighter Days’ to celebrate new arrivals and long, sunnier days in the future. Since I’m still thinking of my own resolutions and goals, here’s what I’m looking forward to in my own upcoming brighter days.

Hosting Family and Friends

The first few months of 2022 are uncharacteristically quiet. As much as I love hopping from destination to destination, it’s going to be so lovely to stay home. What a great opportunity to explore more of the Tampa Bay Area. Instead, we’ll be hosting a handful of family and friends who want a reprieve from the snow and cold. Denver, Chicago, Vermont, and more! Our home is open and ready for whichever visitors wish to make the trip down.

New Growth and Opportunities at Work

It’s no secret that I absolutely love my job! While leaving the classroom was a difficult decision, I know it was the best one I’ve ever made! With this upcoming year, I’m so excited for new projects and initiatives that will be put on my plate. I strive under pressure and am so efficient when checking off a to-do list. With my current company, I feel like the sky is the limit. There’s truly no better feeling in the world!

Spring and Summer Travel Plans

While there aren’t any big trips planned for the first portion of the year, that doesn’t mean there isn’t any on the horizon. There are a few beautiful destinations that I particularly have my eye on. I can’t wait to research and get them on my schedule for the late spring, summer, and maybe even the fall. The biggest challenge is convincing my husband to take a few vacation days. His work ethic is one of my favorite qualities about him, but it certainly doesn’t help my travel daydreams.

Anything Else Not Yet Known

I know I’m an eternal optimist. I wake up each day with a sense of purpose and wonder. Anything good can happen! That being said, I’m so excited for anything unchartered that may pop up in the year 2022. New friends, new opportunities, or new adventures… I’m ready to meet them all! The only thing I have going against me is my slight impatience and wanting these new experiences to happen sooner!

Cabana Life, Florida, Brighter Days, Resolutions, New Year

I hope every one of you is looking forward to the brighter days ahead! Cheers to all of the currently unscripted happenings and moments, new resolutions and goals. Always know that I am in your corner, rooting for you along the way. You’ve got this!

Katie
