Why I Don’t Post As Much

Hello, all of you lovely readers! As I was looking back on an action-packed October, I noticed something glaring on my blog. My once tri-weekly blog posts have become less frequent over the past few months. If you had told me about that trend this time last year, I probably would have been mortified. Working on my blog: writing content, styling outfits, connecting with such an incredible community, was my absolute passion. I think it helped fill a creative void that sadly isn’t always available in education. A year ago, I would have panicked over not finding inspiration and losing something I had worked so incredibly hard on for nearly four years.

While I still love working on the blog, I no longer feel like its success is attached to my self-worth. Do I want to reach a bigger audience and continue to grow? Of course! But I can safely say that it’s something I don’t have to lose sleep over. Even though I shouldn’t look a gift-horse in the mouth, I wanted to know why this shift in thinking has changed. Looking inward for a moment, I quickly concluded that I feel incredibly validated in the workplace.

I loved my time as a classroom teacher, but I always felt like I needed a fallback plan. The statistics on young teachers weren’t particularly on my side, and you never know what the future brings. That became even clearer when I moved to NYC. I wasn’t happy at my new school, and I had some of my dream companies just a few subway stops away.

Moving to New York was definitely a catalyst for my blog. I changed the name to Orange to Apple, had endless things to write about, and met many wonderful creatives that helped fuel my inspiration. During those two years, I admitted something that I deep-down knew since I was a kid that I wanted to write for a living. Even though how wouldn’t manifest itself for a few more years, I put a lot of pressure on my blog. If I didn’t publish five times a week, I would be angry with myself. If I didn’t see my Instagram followers grow, I would feel devastated.

Still, I kept pushing forward, hoping to catch my big break, whatever that meant. I decided to take a break from teaching and attempted to venture down a new career path. Then abruptly, for a few different reasons, life brought me back to Florida just before the phrase “social distancing” was seared into our daily lives. I tried to grow my blog, taught virtually, and attempted to find a new normal during a year of so much uncertainty.

During that time, I was still applying for jobs in the creative space: social media managers, copywriters, proofreaders, and more. I presented my blog as a portfolio, hoping that someone would see me beyond a schoolteacher with a small side hustle. Then, just over a year ago, I finally felt noticed! I was offered a job as a community manager at an educational publisher. I remember getting the call and doing a complete “happy dance” in my driveway. Even though the job is fully remote, the irony of finally working for a New York company while living in Florida does not escape me. Since joining my new team, my position has continued to grow and develop. With every step of the way, I feel so valued and sincerely enjoy “going to” work each day.

Why exactly am I sharing all of this? Well, for starters, I wanted to share the reasoning behind my unintentional hiatus. Secondly, this is a friendly reminder to look at how you spend your 9 to 5. If you think you’re happy but find yourself daydreaming of a new career or looking elsewhere, that’s a pretty clear sign. It never has to be a quick switch, but follow your passions, your interests, and the perfect job or company just may present itself to you. Life has a funny way of working out! Also, don’t worry because this blog isn’t going ANYWHERE!

Love from Florida,
Katie

Salt Lake City, Utah, Fall, travel, trip

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity of flying to Salt Lake City for a work conference. I don’t typically talk about my 9 to 5 life on the blog, but I’m the Community Manager for an Educational Publisher. Inspired by the chaos in local schools, I transitioned from the classroom into this new role in August 2020. I can honestly tell you that it was the best decision I’ve ever made! Because I work remotely, this was also my first opportunity of meeting two of my co-workers in person! Wanting to take advantage of visiting a new city, I wasted no time exploring different spots around the downtown area. Salt Lake City, you absolutely blew me away! Here’s a quick little look into my highlights during my very brief visit.

Lunch at Eva’s Bakery

With a few hours to burn before getting together with my colleagues, I had time for some exploring and eating. My first stop was the adorable Eva’s Bakery. This little bistro is right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City on Main Street. The restaurant’s exterior feels like it’s right out of the Left Bank in Paris with a menu to match. After a long flight, I devoured my Roasted Beet Salad with a complimenting glass of Blueberry Compote Mimosa. On a crisp day, be sure to take a Dirty Chai Latte for the road as you wander more through the Beehive’s State capital city.

Exploring the Grand America Hotel

After lunch and a few work-related errands, I met with Carter Fish at the Grand America Hotel for a quick photo session. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but this hotel exceeded each one. Looking like it came straight from a fairy tale, this is where I would choose to stay if in town for a personal trip. Make reservations for Afternoon Tea or grab drinks at the Gibson Girl Lounge. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Dinner at Copper Onion

After several sessions at an educational conference, my team and I worked up quite an appetite! Each meal was incredible, but our final dinner together probably takes the cake! Copper Onion is also in the heart of the city, serving up outstanding and locally sourced dishes. Since my colleagues and all love a good meal, we took our run off the menu, sharing several plates. Personal favorites include the Pork Belly (because when isn’t that good?), Ricotta Dumplings, and Duck Carbonara. We all left both stuffed and wonderfully content.

Post-Meal Drinks at The Ivy

Our first evening, we had time for post-dinner drinks. Since it was pretty late (on a Wednesday), we found ourselves at The Ivy. By chance, I already had dinner there earlier that night, ordering the Catfish BLT. For drinks, I sipped on the Hibiscus Oleo Margarita and later the Smoke and Rain. Although they include the same spirit, Tequila, these drinks couldn’t be more different in flavor! I highly recommend both, and it just depends on your mood!

Shop Through City Creek Center

Typically I don’t comment on local malls, but Salt Lake City’s is the exception. The entire concept of the City Creek Center brought nature inside, with a creek running through the center. As I walked through, I also noticed some of my favorite stores, including J. Crew, Anthropologie, and LOFT. It almost feels as if this space was made just for me! It’s a good thing I didn’t have much room in my suitcase, or my wallet wouldn’t have been hurting!

Morning Coffee from Three Pines

Is it a trip to a new city if I don’t visit a local coffee shop? Of course not! I noticed Three Pines earlier in my stay because it was right next to Eva’s Bakery. With a line out the door, it’s obvious why it sparked my interest. With a few hours to myself, I decided to walk by and give them a visit one morning. The morning was cold, so a cup of their chai sounded like the perfect little treat. For a more substantial meal, you can also grab a savory breakfast pie for the road.

Salt Lake City, Utah, Fall, travel, trip

When my friends go out to Utah, I so often hear that they skip Salt Lake City to get out on the slopes ASAP. After spending a few days, I can honestly say that I was impressed with the dining scene, the cocktail bars, and the locals I met. Do not overlook SLC. Even if it’s for just 24 hours, I promise you won’t be disappointed in what you find!

Love from Salt Lake City,
Katie

Each year, I can’t help but get just a little jealous of friends who live in the Northeast and in the mountains. While most days it still feels like summer in Florida, Fall weather is in full swing almost everywhere else. Luckily, my recent trip to Salt Lake City gave me the perfect excuse to break out all of the fall fashion, including my new Perfect Zip Bootie from Sarah Flint. These were the perfect addition to my fall wardrobe and have already inspired more trips for the cooler weather. Here’s a quick look into why you’re absolutely going to love them! Remember, you can use the code SARAHFLINT-BAKATIE for $50 off your first pair of Sarah Flint shoes.l

The Style

The Perfect Zip Bootie was a favorite from last fall season. Shoppers rejoiced to learn that the style was coming back for a second rendition. Available in two different heights, 30 mm (which I’m wearing) and 70 mm, both are perfect for dressing up a traditional outfit when Natalie Flats or Sacchetto Ballet Flats just won’t do! The anatomical arch support and extra footbed padding will make these boots one of the most comfortable shoes in your closet. I should know, I wore these from Florida, through the entire Atlanta airport, and around beautiful Salt Lake City, without even the slightest ache or blister! The double-sided gold zippers are not beautiful details but also double for functionality. A quick zip, and you’ll be on your way in the world.

The Quality

This particular pair of Perfect Zip Booties includes buttery soft leather that has rested for 90 days. Inside is an additional leather lining and insole, plus ribbed rubber tread. The result is a boot that will last you for seasons and years to come. No matter what style you pick from Sarah Flint, you can always expect the highest quality. Each pair of shoes is lovingly handcrafted in Italy by specially selected artisans who make the highest quality luxury shoes in the world. Because this company is Direct to Consumer, you can also obtain these practical works of art without the traditional retail markup.

How To Wear

Because of the stunningly beautiful espresso suede, the Perfect Zip Booties are also incredibly easy to style! While you can always go with a standard pair of jeans, they become such a pop of color against my white bootcut jeans from J. Crew and perfectly match my embossed Neely and Chloe handbag! Because I believe olive green is a quintessential fall color, or at least my favorite one, this tissue turtleneck, and plaid shawl kept me comfortable on a sunny Fall day. Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with any way to style it. Be sure to check back on Wednesday to see how I style these shoes with a stunning boho-inspired midi dress! The possibilities are endless!

I am still relishing over a week well spent in Salt Lake City. Having a quick taste for fall, whether in New England or Utah, makes me strongly consider moving back to where I can experience the four seasons. I’m saying that now, but maybe check in with me in January, when Florida is the only state still 70 degrees and sunny! That’s when I can truly thrive in the Sunshine State and probably wear my Sarah Flint shoes along the way.

Love from Salt Lake City,
Katie

Thank you so much to Sarah Flint for gifting me this heavenly pair of Perfect Zip Booties. All opinions are my own. Be sure to visit all of my Sarah Flint inspired outfits to help style everything from flats to heels and booties!
