I’ve always loved the idea of returning to a favorite summer destination in the fall. The scenery changes, the pace slows down, and you get to experience a familiar place in a completely different way. After visiting the Basin Harbor Inn during the warmer months, I was especially excited to return for an October weekend with David and Brennan. This time, we traded long summer afternoons for colorful foliage, cozy sweaters, and a full weekend of fall festivities. Located along the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont, Basin Harbor has all the charm of an old-fashioned New England family resort, and I think I may love it just as much in the fall as I do in the summer.

The History

Part of what makes Basin Harbor so special is its history. This isn’t a resort that was designed to look like a classic New England summer retreat. It actually is one. Family-owned for generations, Basin Harbor has been welcoming guests to the shores of Lake Champlain since the late nineteenth century. Over the years, it has grown from a small lakeside inn into a sprawling resort with individual cottages, restaurants, recreational activities, and plenty of space to explore. Despite all that growth, it has managed to hold on to the nostalgic feeling that makes places like this so appealing. The cottages, Adirondack chairs, waterfront lawns, and generations of returning families make it easy to imagine spending an entire summer here, just as guests have done for well over a century.

The Location

The Basin Harbor Inn is located in Vergennes, Vermont, on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, with views stretching across the water toward the Adirondack Mountains in New York. The setting immediately makes you want to put your phone away and spend the afternoon outside. The resort itself feels wonderfully removed from everyday life, with rolling lawns, wooded paths, waterfront views, and cottages scattered throughout the property. In the fall, the changing leaves make the drive particularly beautiful, and the surrounding countryside is full of the scenery that makes Vermont such a popular October destination. One of my favorite things about staying here is that once you arrive, you really don’t need to leave the property to enjoy your weekend.

Our Cottage

One of my favorite things about Basin Harbor is its collection of individual cottages, which make staying here feel a little more like visiting a family lake house than checking into a traditional hotel. Rather than having everyone stay in one large building, the cottages are spread across the resort, giving guests their own little place to call home for the weekend. They’re particularly wonderful when traveling with a toddler because having a comfortable home base makes the entire trip feel more relaxed. We could head out for activities, return to the cottage for a little downtime, and get ready for dinner without feeling like we needed to be on the go all day. I also love the traditional character of the accommodations, which feels right at home with the resort’s history and lakeside setting.

The Dining

Another reason Basin Harbor makes such an easy weekend getaway is that you can enjoy your meals without leaving the resort. Dining here is part of the experience, whether you’re grabbing something casual between activities or sitting down for a more leisurely dinner after spending the day outside. The Red Mill is a great option for a relaxed meal, while Ardelia’s offers a more traditional dining experience and a lovely excuse to dress up a little. During our October visit, the fall atmosphere made an evening meal feel especially inviting after a day spent exploring the property. I always appreciate a resort where dinner can be an occasion without requiring an elaborate plan, particularly when we’re traveling as a family.

Things to Do

Although it would be easy to spend an entire weekend sitting in an Adirondack chair and looking out at Lake Champlain, Basin Harbor offers plenty of ways to fill your days. During the warmer months, the resort is known for its lake activities, golf, and classic summer recreation, but the property is equally lovely for a slower fall visit. We enjoyed having time to wander the grounds, admire the changing leaves, and take in the views along the waterfront. One of the things I appreciate most about Basin Harbor is that it appeals to different generations. There’s plenty to keep children entertained, but it’s just as easy for adults to find a quiet corner, enjoy a drink, or simply relax. It’s a wonderful balance of activities and downtime, which is exactly what I want from a family weekend away.

HarborWeen Festivities

Our October visit happened to coincide with HarborWeen, Basin Harbor’s fall celebration, and it made the weekend even more memorable. The resort embraces the season with a festive lineup of autumn activities, including pumpkin carving, cider pressing, hayrides, campfires, and other family-friendly fun. It felt like a little bit of everything I love about fall in New England, all in one place. With Brennan along for the weekend, I especially appreciated being able to enjoy the festivities without having to drive from one destination to another or plan a complicated itinerary. We could spend time enjoying the activities, take a break when we needed one, and still have plenty of opportunities to appreciate the lake and the beautiful fall scenery. It’s such a fun way to experience a resort that’s traditionally associated with summer, and a reminder that some of the best New England weekends happen after Labor Day.

I originally fell in love with the Basin Harbor Inn as a classic summer destination, but returning in October gave me an entirely new appreciation for it. The colorful trees, cooler temperatures, and HarborWeen festivities made the resort feel different while preserving everything I already loved about it. More than anything, I appreciate how easy it is to enjoy a weekend here without overplanning. We had time for family activities, good meals, walks along the lake, and those quieter moments that always end up being my favorites. If you’re looking for a fall getaway in Vermont that feels nostalgic, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming to families, Basin Harbor deserves a spot on your list. And while I still love the idea of a long summer weekend on Lake Champlain, I have a feeling October might become one of my favorite times to visit.

Love from Vermont,
Katie
