There is something undeniably special about an East Coast beach day. Unlike many beach destinations where the goal is simply to spend hours in the sun, beach towns throughout New England invite you to linger a little longer. You might spend the morning on the sand, wander into town for lunch, browse a few local boutiques, grab an ice cream cone, or stay until sunset with a sweater draped over your shoulders. Packing for an East Coast beach day is all about balancing practicality with timeless style. The pieces you bring should feel effortless, comfortable, and ready for wherever the day takes you.

Linen Cover-Up

A lightweight linen cover-up is one of the hardest-working pieces in my beach bag. It offers sun protection, dries quickly after a swim, and transitions beautifully from the beach to lunch without ever feeling underdressed. A crisp white version feels especially timeless, pairing just as easily with a swimsuit as it does with sandals and a straw tote for an afternoon stroll through town.

Straw Hat

Nothing completes a beach look quite like a classic straw hat. Besides protecting your face from the sun, it instantly elevates even the simplest swimsuit and cover-up. Choose one with a structured brim that packs well and you’ll find yourself reaching for it all summer, whether you’re spending the day on the beach or exploring a coastal town.

Oversized Beach Tote

A roomy tote is essential for carrying everything you’ll need throughout the day. I always look for one that is structured enough to stand upright in the sand while still feeling relaxed. Canvas and woven straw are my favorites because they’re durable, timeless, and only seem to get better with age.

Sunscreen

If there’s one item I never leave behind, it’s sunscreen. Lately I’ve been reaching for Supergoop, which feels lightweight, blends beautifully, and makes reapplying throughout the day incredibly easy. Keeping it close by means you can reapply often without thinking twice, protecting your skin while still enjoying every minute outside.

Sunglasses

A classic pair of sunglasses instantly pulls everything together while protecting your eyes during long afternoons outside. I always gravitate toward timeless shapes that work with every outfit rather than trend-driven styles. A good pair is one of those accessories you’ll wear well beyond your beach vacation.

Swimsuit

Choose a swimsuit you’ll feel comfortable wearing all day. Whether you plan to swim, walk the shoreline, or simply read under an umbrella, confidence is always the best accessory. I tend to favor simple silhouettes in classic colors that can easily be layered under a linen shirt or cover-up.

Lightweight Towel

A large cotton towel is perfect for stretching out in the sand or drying off after a swim. Neutral stripes or classic colors always feel appropriate for a coastal day. It also doubles as the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic or simply relaxing with a good book.

Good Book

Some of my favorite beach memories involve nothing more than reading with the sound of the waves in the background. Whether it’s a new novel or your latest beach read, don’t forget something you’ll actually look forward to opening. Sometimes the best part of a beach day is finally having uninterrupted time to read.

Sandals

Simple leather sandals are ideal for beach towns. They’re easy to slip on and off, comfortable enough for walking, and polished enough for lunch afterward. Choose a neutral pair and they’ll work with everything you packed for the weekend.

Light Sweater

Even in the middle of summer, evenings along the New England coast can become surprisingly cool. Tossing a tan or navy cotton sweater into your tote means you’ll be ready to stay for sunset without getting chilly. It’s also perfect for breezy ferry rides or waterfront dinners after the beach.

One of my favorite things about East Coast beach towns is that they invite you to slow down. The best days are rarely over-planned. They begin with coffee, drift into long hours by the water, include an unplanned stop for lobster rolls or ice cream, and somehow end with everyone staying just a little longer than expected.

Packing thoughtfully means you’re ready for every part of the day, from the first walk across the dunes to the last glimpse of the sun setting over the water. A few timeless pieces, a great beach tote, plenty of sunscreen, and a good book are often all you really need.

Love from the East Coast,
Katie
