Summer date nights are one of my favorite excuses to get dressed. The plans themselves don’t even need to be particularly fancy. Dinner by the water, drinks outside, a neighborhood restaurant, or an afternoon that turns into evening all call for an outfit that feels a little more special than what I wore during the day. My summer wardrobe tends to revolve around navy, white, black, natural textures, and pieces that can be dressed up without feeling overly done, so these five outfits are essentially my formula for date-night dressing all season long.

The Navy Midi Dress
If I had to choose one perfect summer date-night outfit, it would probably be a navy midi dress. It has the ease of throwing on a single piece but still feels polished enough for a nice dinner, and navy is just a little softer than black during the summer months. I paired mine with cream espadrilles, pearl earrings, and a structured navy bag for dinner in Boothbay Harbor, but I could just as easily see this working for a restaurant in Newport, drinks in the city, or a summer wedding weekend. It’s classic, feminine, and exactly the sort of piece I know I’ll still want to wear years from now.

Not every summer night is 80 degrees, especially in New England, and this is the outfit I want when the temperature drops after sunset. A cream lady jacket with black cropped pants and ballet flats feels a little more Paris than coastal New England, which is precisely why I love it. The simple black bag keeps the look streamlined, while the textured jacket gives it enough interest that you really don’t need much else. I’d wear this for a nicer restaurant, cocktails, a museum date, or one of those cooler evenings when a sundress suddenly feels wildly optimistic.
The Blue Gingham Mini Dress
A gingham dress may be about as quintessentially summer as it gets, especially in blue and white. I love this shorter silhouette for a more casual date night when you still want to look put together, whether that’s lobster rolls by the water, an early dinner after a day at the beach, or cocktails somewhere with a patio. The woven clutch and cream espadrilles add texture without making the outfit feel too precious, and the entire look has that slightly nostalgic New England quality I’m always drawn to in the summer.

It’s also a great option for those brutally hot summer evenings when the thought of putting on jeans or even a midi dress feels like too much.

I love the contrast between the slightly oversized, borrowed-from-the-boys shirt and the shorter skirt, and rolling the sleeves keeps everything relaxed. This would be my pick for wandering around town before dinner, grabbing an aperitif somewhere outside, or any date where you aren’t entirely sure where the evening might take you.
