Every fall, I inevitably find myself saving new outfit inspiration and making mental lists of everything I suddenly need for the season. But when I look back at the outfits I’ve actually loved wearing over the years, I’m reminded that my favorites are rarely the trendiest ones. They’re usually built around the same pieces I return to again and again: a great sweater, good denim, a trench coat, ballet flats, a silk scarf, and plenty of navy, brown, and burgundy. So rather than starting from scratch this fall, I went through some of my favorite outfits from seasons past and found ten I would happily wear exactly as they are today.

Black Knit Midi Dress

Sometimes the outfit that requires the least thought ends up being the one that looks the most polished. I love the simplicity of this black knit midi dress with kitten heels and a small structured handbag. The silhouette does all the work, so there’s no need for much accessorizing or complicated layering. This is one I’d recreate for a fall date night, dinner out, or even an event with a coat thrown over it once the temperatures drop. A great black dress will forever earn its space in my closet.

Chocolate Brown Stripes + Brown Pants

Chocolate brown is having a particularly big moment right now, but this outfit reminds me why I consider it much more than a passing trend. The oversized brown-and-cream striped sweater paired with chocolate trousers creates an almost monochromatic look that still feels relaxed. Woven brown ballet flats and a structured straw tote add a little texture and keep all that brown from feeling too serious. I especially love this for September and early October, when I’m ready for fall colors but not necessarily ready to abandon my warmer-weather accessories.

Sweater Dress + Silk Scarf

This might be one of the most timeless outfits of the bunch. The oatmeal sweater dress and cognac suede boots are a beautiful neutral foundation, but the oversized silk scarf is what makes the entire look. I love how much color and personality it adds without requiring another layer or statement piece. I’d absolutely recreate this combination with a neutral knit dress, brown suede boots, a structured black bag, and whichever silk scarf I’m currently obsessing over.

Olive Vest + Black Basics

This is proof that some of the outfits I want to repeat most are also the simplest. A black long-sleeve tee and cropped black pants create an easy base, while the olive quilted vest adds just enough color and texture to make the outfit feel distinctly fall. Sneakers and a canvas tote keep it casual, which makes this exactly what I want for a weekend coffee run, errands, or a day spent wandering around a New England town. It’s practical, comfortable, and still feels pulled together.

White Button-Down + Navy Corduroys

If I were asked to describe my current style using one outfit, this would be a pretty strong contender. A white button-down, navy corduroys, a brown leather belt, woven ballet flats, and a sweater tossed over the shoulders is about as classic as it gets. The little brown handbag makes it feel especially polished. Nothing here is particularly trendy, which is precisely why I still love it. I could wear this in September, October, or five falls from now and it would still feel completely like me.

Trench || Shirt || Jeans || Sneakers || Handbag

Trench Coat + Striped Tee + White Jeans

I will happily continue wearing white jeans long after Labor Day, especially when they’re paired with pieces that make them feel decidedly more autumnal. A striped tee and trench coat are two of my forever wardrobe staples, and sneakers make the whole combination practical enough for a day with plenty of walking. This is also a great example of transitional dressing because nothing about it feels overly heavy. It works for those early fall days when I’m mentally ready for cashmere but the weather has other plans.

Sweater || Skirt || Heels || Similar Handbag

Navy Sweater + Satin Midi Skirt

There are few color combinations I love more than navy with more navy. Pairing a simple navy sweater with a satin midi skirt makes an otherwise monochromatic outfit feel a little more interesting because of the contrast in texture. The black pumps and small black handbag keep everything polished without competing with the navy. This is exactly the kind of outfit I’d wear for dinner, a holiday event, or any fall occasion when jeans feel a little too casual but I still want to be comfortable.

Denim on Denim

Denim on denim is one of those combinations that I’ve come to appreciate more and more because it essentially creates a neutral canvas for accessories. Here, the denim button-down and jeans are incredibly simple, while the green woven tote gives the outfit its personality. The navy heels keep everything cohesive without making the look feel too coordinated. I’d wear this again almost exactly as pictured, and I especially love it for early fall when a full sweater-and-jacket situation still feels premature.

Burgundy Sweater Dress + Cognac Boots

Burgundy is another color I come back to every fall, and I love it even more paired with warm cognac brown. The simple burgundy sweater dress feels seasonal without relying on a lot of layers, while the knee-high suede boots make the outfit feel distinctly autumnal. I also love the tonal burgundy handbag rather than introducing another contrasting color. It’s an easy formula to remember: choose one rich fall color, repeat it in an accessory, and finish everything with classic brown leather or suede.

Flag Sweater + Jeans + Sneakers

This outfit is perhaps the most casual of the ten, but it captures the New England side of my style perfectly. A cream flag sweater, relaxed denim, sneakers, a navy baseball cap, and a canvas tote are all incredibly simple pieces, but together they feel charming and intentional. It’s exactly what I want to wear for a fall weekend near the water, a farmers market, a day trip, or one of those crisp October mornings that calls for coffee and a long walk. I also love that the sweater provides the personality while everything else can stay wonderfully uncomplicated.

Looking at these ten outfits together, I’m struck less by what has changed in my style and more by what hasn’t. I still love navy and denim. I still reach for stripes, trench coats, silk scarves, ballet flats, suede, and a really good sweater. And while I’m always going to have fun with a new season and a few new additions to my closet, I don’t want getting dressed to feel like constantly chasing what’s next. The outfits I love most are usually the ones built from pieces I already know work for me, with one interesting color, texture, or accessory thrown in. So this fall, I’m taking a little inspiration from my own closet. These ten have already passed the test once, and I have a feeling I’ll be wearing versions of them for many falls to come.

Love from New England,
Katie
