The US Open is one of my favorite end-of-summer events in New York, and it also happens to be one of those occasions that is particularly fun to dress for. There’s no need to show up looking like you’re about to take the court, but a little nod to classic tennis style feels perfectly appropriate. Think crisp whites, navy, a pop of red, stripes, and slightly preppy accessories, all while remembering that late August and early September in New York can still be very hot.
If you’re headed to the US Open this year and wondering what to wear, I put together five easy outfit formulas that feel polished enough for the occasion while still being practical for a long day of walking, watching matches, and enjoying everything else the Open has to offer.
Dress || Sandals || Handbag || Scarf || Sunglasses
Navy Midi Dress + Silk Scarf
A navy midi dress is one of the easiest ways to look polished at the US Open without leaning too heavily into traditional tennis style. I love this one paired with a printed silk scarf, oversized sunglasses, a raffia bag, and simple brown leather sandals. The navy gives a subtle nod to classic American sportswear, while the woven accessories keep everything feeling appropriate for late summer. This would be especially good for an afternoon session that might turn into dinner afterward, since you won’t feel like you’re wearing a specifically “sporting event” outfit once you leave the grounds.
Tank Top || Skirt || Ballet Flats || Tote Bag || Sunglasses || Sunscreen
Navy Tank + White Midi Skirt
If you want something that feels a little more tennis-inspired, a navy tank and white midi skirt is such a classic combination. The color palette gives you the feeling of traditional tennis whites without actually wearing tennis clothes, while white woven ballet flats, tortoise sunglasses, and a navy-trimmed canvas tote keep the whole look polished and practical. And don’t forget the sunscreen. Late-August sun in New York is no joke, particularly if you’ll be spending hours outside watching matches. This might be my favorite formula for someone who wants to look appropriately dressed for the Open without being overly themed.
Sweater || Shorts || Ballet Flats || Handbag || Hat
Green Cashmere + White Shorts
For a slightly preppier approach, pair tailored white shorts with a lightweight green knit, woven ballet flats, a raffia bag, and a classic straw hat. I love the green here because it provides a subtle wink to the tennis court without relying on the more expected navy and white color palette. This is one I’d reserve for a milder day or an evening session, since late August in New York can certainly be too warm for cashmere. If the forecast is hot, swap the sweater for a green sleeveless knit or simply drape a lightweight sweater over your shoulders instead.
Dress || Sneakers || Tote Bag || Hat
Striped Dress + Sneakers
This is probably the sportiest of the five outfits, but it still doesn’t involve a tennis skirt. A navy-and-cream striped dress feels quintessentially East Coast, and adding white sneakers, a navy baseball cap, and a classic canvas tote makes it perfect for a full day at the Open. This is the outfit I’d choose if you know you’ll be walking around the grounds for hours or moving between several matches. The baseball cap and sneakers bring in that athletic influence, while the Breton-inspired stripe keeps the overall look feeling classic. Bonus points for a Honey Deuce once you get there.
Dress || Sandals || Handbag || Sunglasses
Blue Shirtdress + Leather Sandals
A shirtdress is another incredibly easy option for a warm day at the US Open. The pale blue feels fresh and summery, while brown leather sandals, tortoise sunglasses, and a raffia bag give it that slightly more sophisticated finish I always gravitate toward. It’s comfortable without looking overly casual and would work equally well for an afternoon match, drinks afterward, or dinner back in Manhattan. If you’re expecting to do a significant amount of walking, you could easily swap the sandals for white sneakers or a comfortable ballet flat.
Dress (Similar) || Flats || Handbag
Ultimately, I think the best US Open outfits are the ones that give a subtle nod to classic tennis style without feeling like you’re dressing for a theme. Crisp white, navy, stripes, a baseball cap, sneakers, or even a little green can make an outfit feel right for the occasion while still looking like something you’d normally wear. Most importantly, keep the late-summer weather and a full day of walking in mind and choose pieces that are comfortable enough to actually enjoy the experience. The US Open always feels like one of New York’s unofficial last celebrations of summer, so I’m more than happy to use it as an excuse to pull out the sundresses, woven bags, and summer whites one more time before fall officially takes over.
