There are two very different versions of me when I travel. One is all about the itinerary: early wake-ups, packed days, and the thrill of discovering as much as possible in a new place. I love the energy of those trips, the way they leave you buzzing with stories and a slightly overwhelming number of photos to sort through. But then there’s the other version of me, the one who leans into stillness, into slow mornings and open-ended afternoons, where the only plans are to rest, eat well, and maybe take a nap in the sun. On our recent trip to Barbados, that second version came out in full force. And I’m so glad she did.

From the moment we arrived at Cobblers Cove, it was clear this was going to be a trip all about unwinding. I slipped easily into a routine that felt almost meditative in its simplicity. Mornings began very early, just after the sun had risen, with the soft rustle of palm trees and the steady rhythm of the waves as our wake-up call. I’d grab a fresh cup of coffee from the bar and bring it down to a waterfront table, where David and I would sit barefoot with a good book and breathe in the salt air.

There’s something incredibly grounding about being by the sea. No matter what else is going on, the water pulls you into the present moment. I spent as much time as I could by the sea: reading under the shade of a palm tree, swimming in the warm turquoise shallows, or simply watching the light shift across the surface as the day went on. The hours passed without urgency. The only decisions I had to make were what island cocktail I wanted to order next, and what we should do for lunch? Chicken quesadilla? Niçoise salad?

Afternoons were made for long, leisurely showers and slow dressing. Although I brought my full makeup bag, I hardly how the inspiration to apply any. The warm weather and humidity made it the farthest thing from my mind. After a day in the sun, all I needed was a bit of moisturizer and maybe a swipe of lip balm. My hair stayed salty and pull back. Every outfit was chosen with comfort and ease in mind: linens, bright colors, simple sandals. It felt like the most effortless version of myself.

Evenings were my favorite part of the day. Just before sunset, we’d gather with friends for a round of cocktails. Usually they were something rum-based and icy cold. We’d sit outside, watching the sky turn pink and gold, with laughter rolling as easily as the tide. There was no rush to head to dinner, no pressure to dress up or go out. Just good conversation, beautiful views, and a warm breeze that lingered into the night.

There’s something incredibly luxurious about that kind of freedom. Where your time is fully your own and there’s nothing pulling at you, no to-do list waiting when you get home. This trip was a reminder that rest is productive too, and that sometimes the best travel memories come not from what you do, but how you feel while doing nothing at all.
Love from Barbados,
Katie
