During our Rhode Island weekend getaway, we could not resist the chance to hop over to Block Island. Just a short ferry ride from Point Judith, it makes for the perfect family day trip. It is close enough to feel spontaneous, yet far enough away to feel like an escape. With Brennan in tow, it became a day filled with simple joys, coastal scenery, and plenty of delicious food. Block Island offered the ideal mix of exploring, relaxing, and indulging, reminding us why these small adventures are often the most memorable.

Take the High-Speed Ferry from Point Judith
We chose the high-speed ferry out of Point Judith, and it was absolutely worth it. The traditional ferry takes about an hour, but the high-speed option gets you there in just 30 minutes, which makes a big difference when you only have one day to explore. Traveling with Brennan made the quicker trip especially helpful, since she was happy to watch the waves and boats pass by without growing restless. The ride itself was smooth, breezy, and full of that fresh ocean air that immediately sets the tone for a day by the sea. It felt like the adventure began the moment we stepped on board.

Coffee and Breakfast at Persephone’s
Our first stop once we arrived was Persephone’s Kitchen, a cozy café that quickly won us over with its charm. Known for excellent coffee and hearty breakfast sandwiches, it is the kind of spot that feels both unfussy and thoughtful. I ordered an oat milk latte and bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches, while Brennan happily picked at a scone. It was the perfect way to refuel after an early morning and gave us time to plan the rhythm of our day. Sitting there with our coffee, surrounded by the buzz of other ferry passengers doing the same thing, made us feel instantly a part of the island pace.

Relaxing by the Water
One of the highlights of our visit was finding a quiet stretch of beach and simply spending time by the water. The beaches on Block Island are wide, sandy, and beautifully unspoiled, with rolling waves that are mesmerizing to watch. Brennan loved walking along the shoreline, leaving tiny footprints in the sand, while we sat back and soaked in the views. There is something grounding about the simplicity of sitting by the ocean, without any agenda other than enjoying the moment. It was a reminder that slowing down often gives you the best memories.

Shopping for Souvenirs
After breakfast we meandered through some of the local shops in search of souvenirs. Block Island has a wonderful mix of boutiques and small stores, offering everything from nautical-inspired clothing to beachy trinkets. We spotted striped tees, seashell jewelry, and playful gifts that captured the spirit of the island. Brennan enjoyed pointing out bright colors and picking up little treasures as we wandered. Shopping in these small-town stores felt like such a fun part of the experience, the kind of slow activity that makes a day trip feel unrushed and relaxed.

Sampling Frozen Mudslides
Block Island has its own little traditions, and one we could not skip was the frozen mudslide. These blended drinks are part cocktail, part milkshake, and completely indulgent. Sipping one on a warm afternoon feels like a rite of passage for visitors. David and I enjoyed the rich, creamy flavors while Brennan happily snacked on her juice and crackers. It was one of those small but fun moments that made the day feel especially like vacation.

Lunch at the National Hotel
For lunch, we made our way to the National Hotel, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. Dining on the porch with the ocean as our backdrop was a highlight of the day. The view was as good as the food, which made the stop even more memorable. We ordered Point Judith calamari, which was perfectly fried and fresh, and a hearty bowl of clam chowder that truly hit the spot. Brennan enjoyed some French fries, happy to sit with us as we lingered over the meal. Between the historic setting, the relaxed atmosphere, and the simple pleasure of good food, it felt like the quintessential Block Island experience.

Once we returned to the mainland, we stopped at Iggy’s in Narragansett for one last treat. It was a nostalgic choice for David, who spent his college years at URI, and the perfect way to end the day. Fried dough, clam cakes, and creamy chowder reminded us why Rhode Island comfort food is so beloved. Looking back, our Block Island day trip had all the best ingredients: family time, beautiful views, and just enough exploring and indulgence to feel like a true getaway. It is the kind of outing we will think about long after the summer has ended.
Love from Rhode Island,
