There is always that slightly awkward stretch between summer and fall when I am more than ready to start dressing for a new season, but the weather has other plans. September can still be surprisingly warm, especially here in Connecticut, which means the sweaters, jackets, and loafers I’ve been eyeing aren’t necessarily practical just yet. Instead of rushing into an entirely new wardrobe, I like to start incorporating fall through color, texture, and a few strategic layers while continuing to wear the summer pieces I already love. These five outfits are a good example of how I approach transitional dressing and, more importantly, how to make your summer wardrobe work a little harder before packing it away.

Bring Denim Back Into the Rotation
One of the easiest ways to start transitioning your wardrobe into fall is simply to bring denim back into the mix. After months of linen, dresses, and shorts, a pair of jeans immediately gives an outfit a little more weight without requiring any actual layers. I paired my light-wash jeans with a navy linen button-down, woven ballet flats, and a baseball cap, keeping the overall look lightweight enough for a warm day while still feeling like I was starting to move toward fall.

Start Wearing Fall Colors Now
You don’t have to wait for sweater weather to start embracing a fall color palette. In fact, this is one of my favorite ways to dress during those still-hot September days. This golden yellow blouse feels distinctly autumnal, but the lightweight fabric keeps it comfortable when temperatures are still high. Paired with jeans and black espadrilles, it’s an easy way to acknowledge the new season without dressing for weather that hasn’t arrived yet.

Add a Sweater Without Actually Wearing It
This may be my favorite trick for that awkward stretch when you’re ready for sweaters but the weather absolutely is not. Draping a knit over your shoulders adds texture and makes an outfit feel instantly more layered, but you don’t actually have to wear it unless the temperature drops. I added a black sweater over a white button-down and gingham midi skirt, which shifts two very summery pieces toward fall while still keeping the outfit comfortable on a warmer day.

Sprinkle in Summer Accessories
As your wardrobe starts shifting toward fall, there’s no need to put away every summer accessory at once. In fact, keeping a few woven pieces in the mix can stop an early fall outfit from feeling too heavy when it’s still warm outside. Here, the dark denim jacket and matching skirt start to hint at the season ahead, while woven ballet flats and a straw tote keep the look grounded in late summer. It’s an easy way to gradually transition your wardrobe rather than feeling like you need to make the switch overnight.

Let Color Do the Seasonal Heavy Lifting
Sometimes the easiest transition doesn’t involve layering at all. Choosing a richer color can make even a lightweight dress feel appropriate for the season ahead. This maxi dress still has all the ease of a summer dress, but the deeper color and longer silhouette make it work beautifully as August turns into September. I paired it with a woven tote and sandals while the weather was still warm, but later in the season, you could easily swap in a leather bag and ballet flats or loafers to take it another step toward fall.

The biggest thing I’ve learned about dressing between seasons is that there really isn’t a reason to rush it. September doesn’t automatically mean packing away every sundress, straw bag, or pair of espadrilles, especially when the weather still feels like summer. Instead, I like to transition gradually by bringing back denim, adding lightweight layers, swapping in richer colors, and mixing fall pieces with the summer staples already in my closet. It’s a much more realistic way to dress for this time of year, and it gives me a few extra weeks with the pieces I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to yet. Fall will be here soon enough.
