When we go to visit friends, Denver has always been a little bit of a dressing challenge for me. My instinct is to reach for a polished outfit, while Denver has mastered the art of looking completely put together without ever appearing particularly dressed up. Add fall weather that can move from chilly mornings to sunny afternoons, plus the possibility of going from downtown to the foothills in the same trip, and packing requires a little more strategy than simply throwing five good fall outfits into a suitcase.
On past trips, I’ve leaned into some of my usual favorites, including satin skirts, turtlenecks, tailored coats, white denim, and plenty of layers. Even though we don’t have travel plans this year, I wanted to imagine a fall Denver wardrobe that still feels like me while embracing the city’s more relaxed personality. Think comfortable sneakers, great denim, suede, rich shades of brown and burgundy, and pieces that can be layered as the temperature changes. Whether you’re hopping breweries, exploring Union Station, heading outside for a hike, or squeezing in a nice dinner, these are the five outfits I’d want in my suitcase.

Travel Day
I always want my travel outfit to be comfortable enough for a flight but polished enough that I can start exploring as soon as I arrive. I’d layer a chocolate brown half-zip sweater over a simple white tee and pair it with relaxed cream utility pants and retro sneakers. A tan baseball cap and tortoiseshell sunglasses make the outfit feel finished without adding any fuss, while an oversized brown tote has plenty of room for everything I inevitably bring on the plane. The cream and chocolate palette feels decidedly fall without requiring a heavy coat or uncomfortable shoes, and every piece can easily be worn again throughout the trip.
Sweater || Button-Down || Jeans || Flats || Handbag || Sunglasses
Exploring Downtown
For a day around downtown Denver, I’d go back to the classics with a crisp white button-down, dark-wash wide-leg jeans, and a burgundy cardigan layered on top. Burgundy flats add another subtle dose of color, while a tan suede bag and tortoiseshell sunglasses warm everything up. It’s polished enough for a museum, lunch, or an afternoon around downtown but still relaxed enough to fit the city. I also love this as an example of transitional dressing because you can start the morning wearing the cardigan, lose it when the afternoon warms up, and throw it right back on as soon as the temperature drops.
Pullover || Skort || Sneakers || Socks || Sunglasses || Sunscreen
Getting Outdoors
A trip to Denver deserves at least a little time outside, and for this outfit I’m willing to temporarily abandon my ballet flats. I’d pair a black quarter-zip performance top with a black eyelet athletic skirt, trail sneakers, and white crew socks for an outfit that can handle an easy hike or a morning exploring the foothills without feeling completely disconnected from my personal style. Tortoiseshell sunglasses keep it classic, and sunscreen is non-negotiable when you’re spending time outside at elevation. I particularly like the skirt here because it makes an otherwise very practical hiking outfit feel a little more like something I’d actually be excited to wear.
Jacket || Sweater || Pants || Heels || Handbag
Dinner and Drinks
Denver’s casual approach to getting dressed can make dinner particularly tricky for me because I genuinely enjoy dressing up. Rather than fighting it, I’d meet somewhere in the middle with black satin trousers, a simple black crewneck sweater, and an embroidered black-and-brown jacket that adds just enough interest. Brown suede slingback kitten heels and a small suede bag keep the look feminine and polished without making it feel overly formal. I love that the jacket does most of the work here. Take it off and you’re wearing two incredibly simple pieces, but together the textures make the outfit feel special enough for a great dinner.
Rugby Shirt || Jeans || Sneakers || Handbag || Hat
Brewery Hopping
For an afternoon spent brewery hopping, I’d fully embrace Denver’s laid-back side with a green-and-cream striped rugby shirt, classic straight-leg jeans, and comfortable retro sneakers. A tan baseball cap and small suede crossbody keep things practical while still making the outfit feel intentional. It’s casual enough for picnic tables and a flight of beer, but the collared knit and suede bag give it a little more polish than a sweatshirt-and-leggings combination. This is also exactly the kind of outfit I’d happily wear for wandering around a neighborhood, grabbing lunch, or spending an afternoon outside if brewery hopping isn’t on the itinerary.
Turtleneck || Skirt || Similar Boots || Handbag
If I were building a small suitcase around these outfits, I’d prioritize pieces that can work more than once: one great pair of jeans, cream trousers, a white tee and button-down, two or three sweaters, comfortable sneakers, a pair of flats, one slightly dressier shoe, and a couple of lightweight layers. I’d also make sure sunglasses, sunscreen, and a practical water bottle make the cut. The goal isn’t to pack for five completely different versions of yourself. It’s to have enough options to move easily between the city and the outdoors while still feeling like yourself.
