5 Date Night Outfits for Fall

Fall might be my favorite season to dress for a date night. The weather finally allows for a little more texture and layering, but you’re not yet dealing with the practicalities of a full winter coat. My approach is fairly simple: I want to feel dressed up, but still like myself, which usually means classic pieces I can wear again and again. Unsurprisingly, there’s plenty of black and navy, with a little burgundy thrown in for fall. Here are seven fall date-night outfit ideas pulled from some of my favorite looks over the years.

The Black Midi Dress

Not every date night calls for something fitted or overtly dressy. A loose black midi dress with a great neckline and subtle puff sleeve can do just as much work. I wore this one in Paris with simple black heels and a structured bag, and I love how uncomplicated the whole look feels. It’s the kind of outfit that works for an afternoon museum visit that turns into drinks, an early dinner, or a night when you want to look put together without thinking too much about it.

Navy Sweater + Satin Midi Skirt

For a slightly more relaxed date night, I love mixing a cozy knit with a dressier fabric. A navy sweater paired with a matching satin midi skirt feels polished without looking like you tried too hard. Keeping everything tonal makes the outfit feel particularly sophisticated, while black heels and a small handbag are all you really need to finish it. This is also a great formula for those early fall evenings when you want to acknowledge the season without dressing for November weather quite yet.

Blazer + Slip Dress

This is one of my favorite ways to make a slip dress work for fall. Start with a black lace-trimmed midi, then add an oversized black blazer and a pair of kitten heels. The combination of the masculine blazer and feminine lace keeps an all-black outfit from feeling flat, while a feathered or textured evening bag adds a little fun. It feels very Paris-meets-New York and would be perfect for cocktails, a wine bar, or dinner somewhere a little moodier.

Leather Jacket + Black Denim

Date night certainly doesn’t have to mean a dress. Black cropped jeans, a fitted top, and a leather moto jacket make an easy outfit for a more casual night out. The trick is in the details: a pointed kitten heel immediately dresses up the denim, while the leather jacket gives the whole look a little edge. I particularly like this for a concert, drinks and dinner, or any date where you’ll be walking around before or afterward.

The Black Sweater Dress

A black midi dress is probably the closest thing I have to a foolproof date-night outfit. This one has an open back that makes an otherwise very simple silhouette feel special, especially paired with a small black bag and low black heels. I wore this look in Newport, but it could just as easily work for cocktails in Manhattan, dinner in Paris, or a favorite neighborhood restaurant. Add a trench or tailored wool coat once the temperature drops.

The common denominator in all seven outfits is that none of them are particularly complicated. A black dress, satin skirt, good blazer, leather jacket, or pair of tall boots can live in your closet for years and be styled a dozen different ways. That’s my favorite kind of date-night dressing: something that feels a little more special than what I’d wear during the day without requiring an entirely new outfit every time dinner reservations appear on the calendar. Add a great heel, a smaller bag, and maybe a swipe of lipstick, and suddenly the pieces you already own are ready for date night.
