There are certain places that feel like they’ve existed exactly as they should for generations, and Spruce Point Inn is one of them. Tucked away just outside of Boothbay Harbor, this waterfront resort feels like stepping into the New England summer that lives in old photographs and classic films. White Adirondack chairs overlook the harbor, sailboats quietly drift by, children play across expansive lawns, and evenings end with the sound of waves meeting the rocky shoreline. It’s relaxed without feeling sleepy, elegant without ever feeling pretentious, and after just one visit, it’s easy to understand why so many families return year after year. If you’re dreaming of a classic Maine getaway, Spruce Point Inn is exactly the kind of place that reminds you to slow down and savor every moment.
The Location
One of the things we loved most about Spruce Point Inn was its location. Although it’s just a short drive from the shops, restaurants, and harbor cruises in downtown Boothbay Harbor, the property feels wonderfully secluded thanks to its waterfront setting and nearly sixty acres of beautifully maintained grounds. We loved having the flexibility to spend the morning exploring town before returning to the quiet of the resort, where afternoons were spent overlooking the water, playing in the waterfront pool, or simply relaxing on the porch. It truly offers the best of both worlds, giving you easy access to Boothbay Harbor while still feeling like your own peaceful retreat.
The Rooms
Our waterfront room, Captain’s Quarters, quickly became one of my favorite parts of the entire trip. Decorated in a classic coastal style with crisp white bedding, soft blue accents, and a large private deck overlooking the water, it felt bright, comfortable, and perfectly suited to its surroundings. Every morning began with coffee while watching lobster boats head out into the bay, and every evening ended with sunset views of the water as the sun disappeared behind the trees. This is a rare hotel room where you actually want to spend time relaxing instead of immediately heading out for the day.
The Food
Dining at Spruce Point Inn was one of the highlights of our stay, and we found ourselves looking forward to every meal. Mornings can begin with a leisurely breakfast at The Salty Stag. Expect warm pastries, hearty New England favorites. Lunches by the pool somehow made lobster rolls, fresh salads, and frozen drinks taste even better, while dinner at their formal dining room, Whiteclover, offered fresh seafood and seasonal offerings that perfectly complemented the relaxed waterfront setting.
The Pool
Although Maine’s rocky coastline is beautiful enough on its own, I absolutely loved spending time by the pool overlooking the bay. The setting couldn’t have been prettier, with sparkling water, comfortable lounge chairs, and sailboats passing in the distance throughout the day. Families gathered for afternoon swims while couples relaxed with books and cocktails, creating an atmosphere that felt lively yet never crowded. Whether we were cooling off after exploring Boothbay Harbor or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon in the sun, it quickly became one of our favorite places to unwind. The pool tends to fill up quickly to grab the best view so you may either want to stake your claim early or wait until lunchtime when families leave to eat.
The Atmosphere
More than anything else, what makes Spruce Point Inn so memorable is the feeling you get the moment you arrive. Life naturally settles into a slower rhythm here. Children play lawn games while parents sip cocktails overlooking the harbor, friends gather around the fire pits after sunset, and guests linger over dinner as boats quietly drift through the bay. There isn’t any pressure to constantly be doing something, which makes every moment feel more intentional. By the end of our stay, I found myself reaching for my phone less, spending more time outside, and appreciating the simple routines that make a summer vacation so special.
Perfect for Families
Traveling with Brennan made us appreciate Spruce Point Inn even more because it manages to feel both family-friendly and wonderfully relaxing. There was plenty of space for her to run around, easy walking paths, multiple pools, and enough activities to keep everyone entertained without ever feeling overstimulating. At the same time, couples celebrating anniversaries, groups of friends, and multi-generational families all seemed equally at home, creating an atmosphere that felt welcoming for every type of traveler rather than catering to just one audience.
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely. If your ideal vacation includes fresh lobster, waterfront sunsets, charming coastal villages, sailboats gliding through the harbor, and classic New England architecture, Spruce Point Inn delivers all of it with an easy elegance. We left feeling refreshed, not because we packed our days with activities, but because we finally had the chance to slow down, enjoy our surroundings, and simply be present. Those are the trips that tend to stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
