Fall in New England is every bit as good as it looks in the movies. Apple orchards, changing leaves, coastal towns, crisp mornings, and cozy inns make it one of my favorite seasons to explore closer to home. The tricky part is getting dressed for it. September and October can bring chilly mornings, surprisingly warm afternoons, and plenty of time spent outside, so I rely on classic layers that can easily be mixed and matched. Think navy, cream, olive, chocolate brown, and burgundy, with a few great accessories to pull everything together.
Crisp White Button-Down
A white button-down belongs in my suitcase almost regardless of where I’m going, and New England in the fall is no exception. Wear it alone on a warmer afternoon, layer it underneath a sweater, or pair it with cream denim and a barn jacket for an easy polished look.
Oatmeal Crewneck Sweater
A simple oatmeal sweater is exactly the kind of piece I want for a cool fall morning. The neutral color works with both dark and cream denim, and it looks particularly good layered over a white button-down with just the collar and cuffs showing.
Chocolate Brown Sweater Dress
Chocolate brown has become one of my favorite fall neutrals. A sweater dress feels slightly more polished than a basic crewneck and works just as well with jeans during the day as it does tucked into trousers or a skirt for dinner.
Burgundy Cardigan
Burgundy adds color to a fall suitcase without feeling overly seasonal. I love a chunky cardigan worn buttoned on its own with cream jeans and ballet flats, but it can just as easily be layered over a white tee or button-down when the temperature drops.
Olive Barn Jacket
If there is one piece that belongs in a New England fall packing guide, it’s a barn jacket. Mine has already proven itself perfect for apple picking, and I love how the olive and brown corduroy combination works with practically everything else in this packing list.
Navy Cable-Knit Sweater
A navy cable-knit sweater is about as classic New England as it gets. Pair it with cream jeans and sneakers for a coastal afternoon or dark denim and suede boots for a slightly more traditional fall look.
Striped Tee
Not every fall day requires a sweater. A navy-and-cream striped tee gives you a lighter layer for sunny afternoons and looks especially good underneath the barn jacket. It also keeps the packing guide rooted in that classic New England style I love year-round.
Dark Wash Jeans
Dark denim immediately makes my everyday jeans feel a little more appropriate for fall. I’d choose a relaxed straight or slightly wider leg that works equally well with sneakers, ballet flats, and ankle boots.
Cream Jeans
I’m firmly in favor of wearing white and cream well beyond Labor Day. Cream denim keeps all of the darker fall colors from feeling too heavy and looks particularly beautiful with burgundy, chocolate brown, navy, and olive.
Brown Suede Ankle Boots
Suede is one of the easiest ways to add texture to a fall wardrobe. A simple brown ankle boot works with denim and dresses, making it a much more useful suitcase addition than a shoe that only works for dinner.
Burgundy Ballet Flats
Ballet flats are still one of my favorite ways to make jeans and a sweater feel more polished. Burgundy ballet flats gives a simple outfit a little color while still functioning almost like a neutral alongside navy, cream, brown, and denim.
Retro Sneakers
For apple orchards, long walks, and days spent exploring, comfortable sneakers are essential. I like a simple cream pair with a gum sole because they feel sporty without looking too athletic and work with almost everything else I’ve packed.
Chocolate Suede Crossbody
A small brown suede bag brings warmth and texture to even the simplest outfit. The crossbody shape is also practical for days spent walking around town or heading to an orchard when I’d rather have my hands free.
Canvas Tote
For the less glamorous things I inevitably end up carrying, a roomy canvas tote is a must. I especially like cream canvas with brown leather trim because it feels polished enough to carry around town while still being practical for a day outside.
Silk Scarf
A silk scarf takes up virtually no room in a suitcase but can completely change an outfit. Wear it around your neck with a sweater, tuck it underneath the collar of a barn jacket, or tie it around the handle of your bag.
Baseball Cap
A baseball cap is particularly useful for casual mornings and days outside. Olive feels right with this fall color palette and gives jeans, sneakers, and a sweater a slightly sportier New England feel.
Tortoiseshell Sunglasses
Sunglasses stay in my bag well into fall. Tortoiseshell sunglasses works beautifully with all the browns, burgundies, creams, and olive greens in this packing list and feels a little warmer than black frames for the season.
Jacket || Cardigan || Jeans || Sneakers || Handbag || Hat
The key to packing for New England in the fall is less about bringing a lot and more about bringing pieces that work together. Nearly every top in this guide can be worn with either pair of jeans, the barn jacket layers over almost everything, and three versatile pairs of shoes can take you from an apple orchard to dinner at an inn. A palette of cream, navy, olive, chocolate, and burgundy makes mixing and matching easy while still giving the suitcase plenty of interest. Add a few classic accessories, leave a little room for whatever you inevitably pick up along the way, and you’re ready for a very New England fall weekend.
