Every fall, I find myself wanting life to feel a little more like a Nancy Meyers movie. Of course, I wouldn’t say no to the Something’s Gotta Give beach house or the kitchen from It’s Complicated. What I really love is the way her movies make everyday life feel special. A great sweater, a trip to the market, something simmering on the stove, friends gathered around the kitchen, lamps glowing as the sun goes down. Fall is practically made for this kind of romanticizing, and luckily, recreating the feeling doesn’t require a movie-set house or an entirely new wardrobe. For me, it’s about slowing down, leaning into the season, and paying a little more attention to the ordinary rituals that make this time of year so good.

Start With a Really Good Sweater
Consider the great sweater the unofficial uniform of a Nancy Meyers fall. Cream fisherman knits, navy cashmere, relaxed cardigans, crisp white button-downs, straight-leg denim, comfortable trousers, loafers, and simple sneakers all belong in the rotation. I especially love clothes that feel polished without looking overly styled, like the cream sweater and relaxed trousers I’m wearing here. Add a woven tote and you’re dressed for coffee, a farm stand, a walk through town, or whatever else the day happens to bring.
Make an Ordinary Saturday an Occasion
Head to the farmers market, go apple picking, stop at a farm stand, or drive somewhere pretty just for lunch. Bring the big woven tote, pick up apples and a loaf of good bread, order the coffee, and take the scenic route home. Some of the most memorable fall days don’t need much of an itinerary. Especially in New England, half the fun is simply getting in the car and seeing where the foliage and a good lunch take you.

Spend More Time in the Kitchen
Once fall arrives, cooking starts to feel appealing again. I want soup simmering on the stove, a roast chicken in the oven, bread on the counter, and an apple crisp waiting for dessert. Put on music, open a bottle of wine, and let dinner take a little longer than it does during the week. Better yet, invite a few people over. It doesn’t need to become a formal dinner party. A warm soup, good bread, cheese, wine, and friends gathered around the kitchen might actually be more appropriate.
Make Home Feel Cozy
I’d rather make my home feel like fall than decorate every surface for it. Switch on the lamps instead of the overhead lights, bring out a heavier throw, fill a bowl with apples, add a few branches to a vase, and light a candle before dinner. Warm cream, olive, chocolate brown, burgundy, navy, wood, linen, and candlelight do plenty of seasonal heavy lifting without requiring a single sign announcing that it is, in fact, fall.

Romanticize the Weeknight, Too
The best part of this idea is that it doesn’t have to be reserved for an idyllic Saturday in October. Close the laptop at the end of the workday. Change into a sweater. Take a walk before it gets dark. Put music on while you cook dinner. Use the good wine glass on a Tuesday. Read for half an hour instead of scrolling. And when all else fails, light a candle, make popcorn, and put on When Harry Met Sally, Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated, The Holiday, Father of the Bride, or The Parent Trap.
Get Outside While the Season Is Here
Fall always seems to disappear just as quickly as it arrives, so I want to spend as much of it outside as possible. Go for the walk even if you don’t technically need to go anywhere, bring coffee to the park, sit outside for lunch when the weather cooperates, or take the longer route through town simply because the leaves are beautiful. Weekends can mean apple orchards and country drives, but a Tuesday afternoon walk before sunset counts too. Part of creating a Nancy Meyers fall is simply noticing the season while you’re in it instead of realizing sometime in November that all the leaves have already fallen.
Sweater || Pants || Sandals || Handbag
The real appeal of a Nancy Meyers fall isn’t the enormous kitchens, perfect houses, or wardrobes full of beautiful cashmere. It’s the attention paid to everyday life. Meals are worth lingering over. Getting dressed is part of the fun. Home is somewhere you want to be. Friends gather in the kitchen, errands become outings, and an ordinary evening can still warrant candles and a bottle of wine. That’s the part I want to borrow this season. I may not be living on a movie set, but I can wear the sweater. I can take the pretty road home, cook something good, and make an ordinary Tuesday night feel special. And if a Nancy Meyers movie happens to be playing in the background, even better.
