There are few places I enjoy dressing for more than coastal Maine in the summer. Give me blue and white, stripes, linen, woven bags, easy sandals and a sweater for when the temperature inevitably drops, and I am very happy. For our latest trip to Maine, I packed almost entirely within that formula. We spent our days exploring little coastal towns, wandering through Boothbay Harbor, relaxing at the hotel and, of course, eating plenty of lobster rolls. I wanted everything I brought to feel polished enough that I could head straight to lunch or dinner, but comfortable enough for walking around with a toddler in tow. Here is everything I wore in Maine.

Blue Striped Skirt + White Button-Down
This might be my favorite look from the entire trip and, to me, it is quintessential New England summer. I paired a full blue-and-white striped maxi skirt with an oversized white button-down and simple flat sandals. The combination feels feminine without being overly precious, and the loose silhouettes made it incredibly comfortable for an afternoon outside. This is exactly the kind of outfit I want to wear in Maine: classic, unfussy and just a little nautical.

Navy Midi Dress + Espadrilles
If there is one thing I will always pack for a summer trip, it is a navy dress. I wore this smocked navy midi dress with cream lace-up espadrilles and my navy Louis Vuitton bag for an easy dinner look in Boothbay Harbor. I love that the dress does most of the work on its own. Add a pair of espadrilles and a favorite bag and you’re done. It was polished enough for dinner but still completely appropriate for a casual Maine evening.

White Linen + Lobster Cardigan
Possibly the most Maine outfit of the trip! I started with a white button-down and white linen shorts, then added this cream lobster cardigan when I needed another layer. A straw hat, leather sandals and my monogrammed canvas tote finished everything off. I love packing white-on-white looks for summer because they create such an easy base for more playful pieces, and in this case, the lobster cardigan gets to be the star without the outfit feeling overly themed. And yes, I fully support wearing a lobster sweater while in Maine.
Blue + White Striped Pajamas
Vacation pajamas deserve a moment, too. I packed this blue-and-white striped pajama set for slow mornings with coffee on our balcony, and it ended up feeling perfectly appropriate for Maine. There is something about changing into actual pajamas at the end of a vacation day that makes staying at a hotel feel even more luxurious, especially when you can wake up, throw open the balcony doors and drink your coffee overlooking the water.

Striped Popover + White Jeans
For drinks at the hotel, I wore a blue, white and red striped popover with cropped white jeans, metallic sandals and a woven clutch. This is probably the best example of my everyday summer style translated to Maine. Nothing about it is complicated, but the combination of crisp white denim and a striped shirt always works. The little bit of red in the stripe also gave the outfit a subtle Americana feel that was perfect for a summer trip to New England.

Red Gingham Dress + Baseball Cap
I couldn’t go to Maine in the summer without packing at least a little gingham. For exploring around the harbor, I wore this red gingham dress with simple flat sandals and a yellow baseball cap. It was one of the easiest outfits I packed and exactly what I wanted for a day spent walking around outside. The gingham feels cheerful and summery, while the baseball cap makes the whole look feel a little more casual and lived-in.

L’Été Tee + White Pants
This was my casual coffee-run outfit and one of those combinations I could happily wear all summer long. I paired my L’Été tee with wide-leg white jeans, brown leather sandals and a woven tote. The French tee gives an otherwise very simple outfit a little personality, while the neutral accessories keep everything relaxed. It also feels like the perfect intersection of two things I love aesthetically: French summer style and New England coastal dressing.
Yellow Stripes + White Shorts
And finally, an easy outfit for hanging around the resort with Brennan. I wore a pale yellow striped top with white shorts and my brown leather sandals. It was comfortable enough for chasing a toddler around the lawn but still felt pulled together enough for vacation photos, lunch or an impromptu drink on the porch. I particularly love pale yellow with white during the summer. It’s softer than my usual navy and blue but still works beautifully with the rest of my wardrobe.

Looking back, almost everything I packed came back to the same few staples: blue and white, stripes, gingham, white linen and denim, flat leather sandals, woven accessories and one or two lightweight layers. Nothing felt overly precious, and almost everything could have been worn with something else in my suitcase. That’s really my goal when packing for coastal New England. I don’t want a completely separate “vacation wardrobe.” I want classic pieces that feel especially at home by the water but that I’ll happily wear again once I’m home. And apparently, if it comes in blue and white, there’s a very good chance I’m packing it for Maine.
